二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A 19-year-old independent artist, Omar Banos, is making’ waves as Cuco, a self-produced multi-instrumentalist and singer. Omar Banos’ approach to music is simple. He just wants to make the music he would listen to himself. Most of the time, that idea shows in his fast hip-hop beats and jazzy electric guitar solos.

Banos, who has released two self-produced albums, has been aspiring to music. He always wanted to play the guitar, and picked it up in high school before expanding his talent to the trumpet and French horn. “I’m very committed to my instruments,” Banos said. “If an instrument is right in front of me, and nobody has time to teach me, I just teach myself.” The same is true for his dreamy production. At 16, Banos got his hands in his first music-editing software, and he has developed a range of techniques.

Banos switches between English and Spanish, singing with his pleasant and warm lilt. “When I’m writing, I just put myself in a place, in a certain time period in my life,” he said, “songs just come out very naturally.”

Though Banos’ soft sound might encourage daydreaming, the independent artist is keeping his feet firmly on the ground during his breakthrough. “I feel I’m watching myself take off, but my brain is still on the ground,” he said. “This all happened so quickly. I didn’t even have time to get ready!”

Banos adds that despite his success, he isn’t always recognized as Cuco. “I will wear Vans, and sometimes people will get confused. They will ask whether I’m sure I’m there to perform. I guess I don’t look like an artist,” he said.

【1】Why did Banos make music in the beginning?

    A.To entertain himself.

    B.To kill his dull time.

    C.To make himself well-known.

D.To improve his skill in music.

【2】What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.Banos’ high school life.

    B.Banos’ learning methods.

    C.Banos’ achievements in music.

    D.Banos’ great interest in music.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Banos?

    A.Honest and careful.

    B.Efficient and faithful.

    C.Creative and low-key.

    D.Devoted and warm-hearted.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.Banos has made himself take off

    B.Banos will continue daydreaming

C.A genius learned music in high school

D.A famous singer keeps pursuing his dream

  • 22、   About 12 million tons of plastic wastes are entering the oceans every year. This garbage pollutes the water, kills wildlife and breaks down into small pieces that fish and other creatures eat.

Now a group of Spanish fishermen will receive economic support to catch plastics. It is part of a new project. Carlos Martin is one of the fishermen taking part in the project. He and his partners collect the plastic in the ocean and bring it back to land every week. Martin thinks rivers carry a lot of plastics to the sea. He says his most concern is no more than that the plastics often get caught in the nets, which makes nets not work properly. They take on mud(泥), causing the nets to break because they weigh so much.

Under the new programs, one million pounds will support ocean cleanup efforts for fishermen like Martin. The money is coming from the European Union and the Catalan government. Sergi Tudela, the General Director of Catalonia Fisheries, is responsible for the cleanup project. He said, "We are hopeful that if we are successful in this project, we can apply it to other areas in the Mediterranean(地中海)."

Government reports show that the amount of plastic wastes washing up along the Spanish coastline has grown by 65 percent in just six years. Fishing equipment makes up a large part of the about 8 to 12 million tons of plastics left in the world's oceans every year.

Martin says the fishing community now understands how big the problem is. He says, "In the past we didn't see it that way. We took the plastic garbage and threw it back into the water. I think that after a few year here we have realized the problem. Nothing is thrown into the water; we collect everything and bring it to shore.

【1】What worries Martin most about plastic wastes at the beginning?

    A.They pollute the sea environment.

B.They affect the quality and taste of fish.

C.They prevent the fishing nets from working well.

D.They kill wildlife and reduce his fishing amount.

【2】What does Sergi Tudela probably consider doing?

A.Getting more money to support the project.

B.Getting help from other European countries.

C.Spreading the cleanup project to more places.

D.Praising the European Union for their helping to the oceans.

【3】What do Martin's words in the last paragraph imply(暗示)about the fishing community?

A.Its members do a lot of work for free.

B.It has stopped using plastic fishing equipment.

C.It has made positive changes to fight plastic wastes.

D.Its members find people sill throw the garbage carelessly.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.New programs are changing fishermen's life

B.Money is given to Spanish fishermen to clean up oceans

C.Traditional fishing equipment causes a lot of plastic wastes

D.Spanish fishermen are encouraging people to clean up oceans

  • 23、   Learning how to cope with death has always been a central part of human existence. Even the Pixar movie Coco bases its story on the Mexican traditions of Dia de los Muertos. In this article, you will find out why and how Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead.

I once visited the Museum of Mummies in the Mexican city of Guanajuato with a Swedish friend. The mummies were displayed among fake cobwebs ( ), and other cheap adornments (装饰物). Confronted with this seeming lack of respect for the dead, I explained to my shocked companion that Mexicans have a peculiarly different relationship with death to other cultures. As the Nobel Prize-winning Mexican writer Octavio Paz explained in his work:

“The Mexican ... is familiar with death, jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, and celebrates it. True, there is as much fear in his attitude as in that of others, but at least death is not hidden away: he looks at it face to face, with impatience, disdain (鄙视) or irony.”

The celebration of the Day of the Dead — a week of festivities from 28 October to 2 November — is an essential part of this embracement of death that is particular to Mexican national identity. The popular belief is that the dead have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on earth and enjoy once again the pleasures of life. Therefore, Mexicans visit the graves of families and friends and adorn them with colorful flowers and offerings of food. The period is a joyous celebration of life, rather than a sober mourning of its passing.

The origins of the festival lie in the 16th-century fusion of the Aztecs’ belief in death as merely one part in the wider cycle of existence, their ritual venerations (仪式崇拜) and offerings to  the goddess Mictecacihuatl  (“Lady of the Dead”) for  the deceased, and the Spanish conquerors’ desire to accommodate these festivities within the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

In a country as socially and geographically diverse as Mexico, there is significant regional variation in the nature of festivities: the southern state of Chiapas is far more likely to focus its efforts on processions ( ) and public commemorations( ) of death than the valley of

Mexico, where the decoration of altars ( ) in homes and tombs of the deceased is more popular. Urbanization, too, plays a large role in regional variations. For the south and rural areas the period holds far greater social and cultural significance than in the north and large cities; families and communities in rural areas will often spend large parts of the year preparing for the occasion.

1Why does the author say “Mexicans have a peculiarly different relationship with death to other cultures?”

A.Because Mexicans always show their respect for death in the form of mummies.

B.Because Mexicans do not fear death or respect it.

C.Because adornments like flowers can be seen everywhere during the Day of the Dead.

D.Mexicans face death bravely rather than hide it away.

2Which statement is NOT true according to the origins of the Day of the Dead?

A.It was the Aztecs who determined how to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

B.The Aztecs believed death was part of the wider cycle of existence.

C.The Aztecs would give offerings to the goddess of death for their lost loved ones.

D.The Spanish conquerors wanted to fit the festivities into some of their Catholic celebrations.

3Why do Mexicans visit the graves of families and friends and offer colorful flowers and food?

A.Because they can ask God to permit the dead to visit them in this way.

B.To celebrate the joy of new life in spring.

C.Because the dead will be permitted to visit their families and enjoy the pleasure of life again.

D.Because this is an essential part of embracement of death.

4Which of the following explains the role that urbanization plays in the regional variations of celebrating the Day of the Dead?

A.People in the south and rural areas put more emphasis on the occasion.

B.People in the valleys usually decorate the alters in homes and the tombs of the dead.

C.People in the north and big cities spend large part of the year preparing for the celebration.

D.The southern states do not care about the decoration of alters at home.

  • 24、Both misinformation, which includes honest mistakes, and disinformation, which involves an intention to mislead, have had a growing impact on teenage students over the past 20 years. One tool that schools can use to deal with this problem is called media literacy education. The idea is to teach teenage students how to evaluate and think critically about the messages they receive. Yet there is profound disagreement about what to teach.

Some approaches teach students to distinguish the quality of the information in part by learning how responsible journalism works. Yet some scholars argue that these methods overstate journalism and do little to cultivate critical thinking skills. Other approaches teach students methods for evaluating the credibility of news and information sources, in part by determining the incentive of those sources. They teach students to ask: What encouraged them to create it and why? But even if these approaches teach students specific skills well, some experts argue that determining credibility of the news is just the first step. Once students figure out if it’s true or false, what is the other assessment and the other analysis they need to do?

Worse still, some approaches to media literacy education not only don’t work but might actually backfire by increasing students’ skepticism about the way the media work. Students may begin to read all kinds of immoral motives into everything. It is good to educate students to challenge their assumptions, but it’s very easy for students to go from healthy critical thinking to unhealthy skepticism and the idea that everyone is lying all the time.

To avoid these potential problems, broad approaches that help students develop mindsets in which they become comfortable with uncertainty are in need. According to educational psychologist William Perry of Harvard University, students go through various stages of learning. First, children are black-and-white thinkers—they think there are right answers and wrong answers. Then they develop into relativists, realizing that knowledge can be contextual. This stage is the one where people can come to believe there is no truth. With media literacy education, the aim is to get students to the next level—that place where they can start to see and appreciate the fact that the world is messy, and that’s okay. They have these fundamental approaches to gathering knowledge that they can accept, but they still value uncertainty.

Schools still have a long way to go before they get there, though. Many more studies will be needed for researchers to reach a comprehensive understanding of what works and what doesn’t over the long term. “Education scholars need to take an ambitious step forward,” says Howard Schneider, director of the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University.

【1】As for media literacy education, what is the author’s major concern?

    A.How to achieve its goal.

    B.How to measure its progress.

C.How to avoid its side effects.

    D.How to promote its importance.

【2】What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Importance.

    B.Variety.

    C.Motivation.

    D.Benefit.

【3】The author mentions stages of learning in Paragraph 4 mainly to________.

    A.compare different types of thinking

    B.evaluate students’ mind development

C.explain a theory of educational psychology

D.stress the need to raise students’ thinking levels

【4】Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.Media Literacy Education: Much Still Remains

B.Media Literacy Education: Schools Are to Blame

C.Media Literacy Education: A Way to Identify False Information

D.Media Literacy Education: A Tool for Testing Critical Thinking
