21、Derek Veal found an old suitcase filled with photos, some more than 100 years old, when he explored his grandfather’s old house in Georgia. It belonged to his great-grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症)and lived in a nursing home. Veal and his grandfather went to visit her with the photos, hoping she could tell them more about the photos. What happened next changed Veal’s life.
“Everything came back to her when she saw these pictures,” Veal said. “She recognized her sisters, her aunts, her grandparents…It was the first time I had ever seen someone’s excitement from an old photo returning to them.”
The experience made Veal realize the power of old photos to hold precious and long-forgotten memories and restore a sense of identity. It never left him. Two years ago, when he came across old family photos for sale at a thrift store(旧货店), he decided to pick one picture and try to track down the family. Soon, he was inspired to buy more photos and started a Facebook group called Old Photo Project to aid in finding their families.
Veal is not alone in this hobby. David Gutenmacher, 26, lives in Queens, New York, and started his project, Museum of Lost Memories, in late 2020. He has already had over 300,000 followers on Instagram and over 750,000 on TikTok. “Some of my posts have gone viral and twice a person or family was tracked down in a matter of minutes!” Gutenmacher said. These lost pictures can bring the memories back to the families they belong to.
What makes this hobby so unique is not only how it gives people the chance to help others, but it also brings these enthusiasts a sense of purpose. “I feel like this is my calling,” said Gutenmacher. “The more I return memories, the more it feels like I’m supposed to be doing this.”

22、A recent story on TikTok showed how two neighbors found companionship during the lockdown because of the pandemic (疫情), thanks to a shared love of the piano.
The story started when Giorgio Lo Porto heard his neighbor playing the piano through their dividing wall. Lo Porto, an Italian living in London, decided to reach out to his neighbor and left a note asking him or her to play My Heart Will Go On. The mystery neighbor agreed, leading Lo Porto to send another note suggesting they play a duet (二重奏) together from the comfort of their own homes. The mystery neighbor started playing the piano at 2:00 pm, and when he stopped after finishing a part of a song, Lo Porto continued. Over time the duets between the two complete strangers became a regular weekend appointment.
Weeks later, the pair finally met and it was better than expected. The mystery pianist happened to be a 78-year-old Polish man named Emil, who was living in temporary accommodation until his house was sold. He lost his wife in December due to COVID-19 and all he had left was the piano. And the reason why he played at 2: 00 pm every weekend was that he and his wife used to do that.
The pair finished a final duet together — Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata — before Emil moved out at the end of February.
While this is heartwarming in itself, the story has a heartbreaking ending: On March 14, Lo Porto shared that his old neighbor had passed away in his sleep. He said, “Now he is reunited with his wife.”
While saying goodbye to Emil, Lo Porto wrote, “Dear Emil, I knew very little about you, but you changed my life. You gave me back my passion, and we shared that with the world. You’ll be in my heart. I’ll keep playing, thinking of how powerful music can be. You said I was your light, but you’ve been mine, too. Bye, Emil.”

23、Using Technology to Write the Next Hit.
Writing a book is a long and challenging process, but new technology is increasingly making it easier for others to finish their books.
Michael Green, a US data scientist-turned-novelist, felt that technology could help him simplify the writing process when he was in the middle of writing his debut (首部) book.
He said that the process had become difficult to manage: “In the midst of editing, I got to the point where I started feeling like I had a lot of plots and characters,” he told the BBC.
“I had all these documents on the deeper aspects of the world I was creating. I was worried about not being able to keep track of it all. That is when I switched into my more data science-minded approach to solving a complex problem with a lot of different places.”
Green went on to create Lynit, a digital platform to help authors plan and weave together the many elements that form a story, such as the themes, characters and major events.
“As the author gets a new idea that they want to bring into the story, they are able to input it into a natural framework,” he told the BBC, “Piece by piece they are adding to the story. As new ideas come in, they change, maybe by creating new nodes (节点), new relationships.”
Once the book has been published, technology is also playing in an ever-increasing role in publicity and connecting with readers. Websites and APPs from specialist firms allow authors to participate in live-question-and-answer sessions with their audience.
Another tech firm, Crazy Maple Studios in California, US, offers authors four apps that can add music, animation, sound effects, and in some cases, game play.
Michael Green believes technology will become even more important as a new generation of tech-savvy (精通技术的) writers becomes more well known.
“What I’m finding with the Generation Z and even younger writers is that they are looking for technology to give them guidance,” he told the BBC, “They see it as a tool to learn and grow with rather than extra work.”
【1】What difficulty did Green face in writing his debut book?
A.He often felt that he was not creative enough.
B.He would leave out important plots.
C.He had trouble organizing his thoughts.
D.He was afraid the characters wouldn't appeal to readers.
【2】What is an advantage of technology according to the text?
A.It creates new relationships for others.
B.It can generate images based on words.
C.It can translate thoughts into sentences.
D.It brings authors closer to their readers
【3】Which of the following would Green most probably agree with?
A.Tech-savvy writers becomes known thanks to technology.
B.Young writers rely too heavily on technology.
C.Technology should be dismissed as extra work .
D.New technology matters to growing young writers.
【4】What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To give advice on how to write a book.
B.To introduce how technology in writing develops.
C.To share how new technology benefits authors.
D.To show the popularity of new tools among authors.
24、China became the first country to clone a monkey using non-reproductive cells, reducing the need to breed lab monkeys and paving the way for more accurate, effective and affordable animal tests for new drugs, scientists said on Thursday .
By December, the Institute of Neuroscience of the Chinese Academy of Sciences had created two clone macaques(猕猴) named”Zhong Zhong” and “Hua Hua” by nuclear transferring of somatic cells(体细胞)-any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells.
Tetra, a monkey born in 1999, is the world's first cloned monkey, but it was done by using a simpler method called embryo splitting(胚胎分割); but it could only generate four cloned offspring at a time and cannot be genetically changed to suit the experimental need.
Cloning a monkey using somatic cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类) that shares its genetic makeup, and therefore all of its complexity, with humans.
For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly and bad for the environment, and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes.
By cloning monkey using somatic cells, we can massively cultivate large numbers of genetically identical offspring in a short amount of time, and we can even change their genes to suit our needs. This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine.
Sun Qiang, director of the non-human primate research facility at the institute, said most of the drug trials are currently done on lab mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or even have severe side effects on humans because the two species are so different
“Monkeys and humans are both primates, so they are much closely related and testing on monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans,”he said. This is especially useful in testing drugs for neural(神经的) diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, metabolic syndrome(代谢综合症) and immune system diseases, and tumors, he added.
“This achievement will help China lead the world research in the international science projects related to neural mapping of primate brains, "he said. "However, bio labs from the United States, Japan, and European countries are also very capable, and they will quickly catch up with China after the monkey cloning technology is made public, "Sun added.
“This means we have to innovate continuously and work extra hard this year to stay ahead," he said.
【1】Which of the following is the most important factor in cloning macaques named "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua"?
A. Reproductive cells. B. Somatic cells
C. Neural mapping. D. Genetic makeup
【2】Why is cloning monkeys so difficult?
A. Because it is bad for our environment.
B. Because each monkey might have different genes.
C. Because monkeys' genetic makeup is as complicated as humans.
D. Because it is too expensive to work on their genetic makeup.
【3】What is the main idea of Paragraph 8?
A. The cure for neural diseases.
B. The process of cloning monkeys.
C. The significance of cloning monkeys.
D. The close relations between monkeys and humans.
【4】What can we infer from this passage?
A. More effective medicine will be produced.
B. Drug trials on lab mice will be abandoned.
C. China is the first country to have cloned monkeys.
D. China will stay ahead of the world in cloning.
