  • 21、Pandas are not only a national treasure, but are loved around the world.

Recently, a giant panda cub born in August at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, US, was given the name Xiao Qi Ji, which is translated into English as “little miracle”. The choice was the result of a five-day online vote that drew nearly 135,000 voters in the US. Interestingly, National Public Radio said that in a nod to Chinese tradition, the name was not chosen until 100 days after the birth.

This cub’s birth proved to be quite inspiring - and at a time when inspiration was truly needed.

“Xiao Qi Ji’s birth is a true miracle that has been so uplifting to all of us during the pandemic (疫情),” Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said in a video congratulatory message. “ We are connected again in the growth of our little ambassador, and in our shared joy and friendship.”

The furry black-and-white animals have played an important role in the country’s diplomacy, known as “ panda diplomacy (外交)”.

According to the Japanese Royal Annual, the practice dates back to the Tang Dynasty, when Empress Wu Zetian sent a pair of pandas to the Japanese emperor.

China revived panda diplomacy in the 1950s when China sent two pandas to the Moscow Zoo. By 1982, China had given 23 pandas to nine different countries. However, most of them have died. China stopped giving away pandas in the early 1980s. Instead, the animals are loaned to other countries. In general, they are to be returned to China after 10 years.

But why do these cute “diplomats” find it hard to survive in other countries? According to Xinhua, their dietary habit is one significant reason. Their nutrition mostly comes from bamboo shoots. Adult giant pandas consume about 40 kilograms of bamboo daily. Pandas can also be quite picky. They refuse to eat bamboo shoots after they have blossomed.

It takes 10 years for a new crop of bamboo to mature, and many countries do not have an environment suitable for bamboo growth. This means that food has to be imported In August, Calgary Zoo in Canada announced that due to pandemic-related changes in its import laws and quarantine methods, they couldn’t provide enough fresh bamboo for pandas. This meant that they had to send two giant pandas back to China.

But countries are still trying their best to facilitate this special type of diplomacy. “We don’t own the pandas, but the whole world wants to help save the panda, and we do that through our knowledge exchange.” Steven Monfort, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, told China Daily.

【1】The expression “in a nod to” in Para. 2 is closest in meaning to________.

    A.in praise for

    B.in response to

    C.in favor of

    D.in order to observe

【2】Why China decided that pandas are only loaned to other countries?

A.Because the pandas’ dietary habit was significantly changed abroad.

B.Because the pandas couldn’t have bamboo to eat in other countries.

C.Because most of pandas could not be adapted to the climate abroad.

D.Because most of the pandas sent to other countries couldn’t survive.

【3】What can we learn from the text?

A.It was the first time that China had sent a panda to Japan.

B.The practice “panda diplomacy” dales from the Tang Dynasty.

C.China began panda diplomacy, sending two pandas to Moscow Zoo.

D.Two giant pandas had to be returned because they were sick in Canada.

【4】What Steven Monfort’s attitude towards the special type of diplomacy?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Uncaring.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Doubtful.

【5】What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To tell us how to feed pandas properly.

B.To call on people to love pandas in the world.

C.To introduce the furry black and white ambassador.

D.To explain why “panda diplomacy” is stopped.

  • 22、During these past few days I have been reflecting a lot on everything that happened this past year and thinking of what I can do differently so that the coming year will be much better! Here I want to share some tips so you can also do your resolution and you can achieve them all!

·Be realistic: You should always try to reach for the skies with your goals, but things like “I want to win the lottery(彩票)” or “I want to lose 80 pounds in 1 month” are things you shouldn’t have on your list because they will only become frustrations.

·Be detailed: It’s a lot easier to accomplish more specific plans than general ones. Instead of writing “I want to lose weight,” put things like “I will start my Yes You Can! Diet Plan the first Monday of the year” or “I will start a movement routine 3 times a week for 35 minutes.” When we put down concrete activities, we commit ourselves to them and it becomes a lot harder to come up with excuses.

·Think of alternatives: At the beginning of this past year, you put that you were going to start going to the gym as one of your annual plans. During the whole year you intended to take action but you always said that you couldn’t because you came home so tired from work. If this is one of your plans for this year, you should write down how you’re going to achieve it. For example, “I will start going to the gym in the mornings, before work.” That way you prevent what stopped you from achieving your goal last year.

·Focus on goals which depend on YOU: It is very important that all of your plans are for YOU to accomplish, and it is important that you write them down that way. If one of your goals this coming year is to improve a relationship with one of your family members, make sure that you clearly put down what you are going to do for this to succeed. For example, “I will call my sister at least three times a week and I will visit her in the middle of the year.”

Well, I hope that you use these tips so that this year you will accomplish everything you want, and make it the best year ever! Thank you for being with me during everything this past year, and I hope that you keep showing me all of this love and support during the next. Happy new year!

【1】 Why isn’t “I want to win the lottery” recommended as a New Year plan?

    A. Because it is very likely to fail.

    B. Because it is too easy to realize.

    C. Because it is not big enough as a goal.

    D. Because it is not easier than losing weight.

【2】 The underlined word commit in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by the word_______.

    A. devote B. determine C. adjust D. force

【3】When you failed to accomplish your plan last year, you’re advised to ______.

    A. take action instead of writing it down

    B. give up the same plan this year

    C. put down the way to realize it

    D. stop making any plans

【4】According to the passage, which of the following is the best plan?

    A. I will become a millionaire in one month.

    B. I want to be the champion of the marathon.

    C. I will change all of my bad habits in one week.

    D. I will go for a walk after supper in working days.

  • 23、Camelli’s duty was simple: to give back to the community where she was raised. Warren, Ohio lies just thirteen miles north of Youngstown, the former center of steel production, and now one of the neediest cities in the country. Both cities’ populations and its finance have been on the decline each year, with unemployment rates surpassing both the state and national average.

But it wasn’t always this way. Thirty years ago, when Camelli was a student at Howland High School, the school where she now teaches Advanced Placement Psychology, “The poorness level was around 6%,” she says. Today, it is closer to 40%.

This financial condition influences everything from the way students learn, to their ability to deal with social and emotional issues. Knowing this, Camelli created Paw Pantry. Whether it’s for food, clothes, school supplies or personal hygiene (卫生) products ,students and their parents can go on the district’s website and fill out a request form for Paw Pantry products. They can choose to pick their items up—or have them delivered—at school.

Camelli mentioned Paw Pantry when she attended her high school activity in 2017. It made her former classmates aware of how their hometown has changed over the years. “Soon, money started pouring in from all over the country, all over the world,” she says.

In just a year and a half since the Paw Pantry began, Camelli has received plenty of non-perishable (不易变质的) food, clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, school supplies—even home goods, including a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, and a stove.

Camelli actively shows her students the power of connection. “I’m definitely kinder because of Ms. Camelli. Ms. Camelli is a mother, but she’s also a mother figure for all of us”. Blake says “Ms. Camelli, you will never understand how happy this act of your caring had made me,” she added.

Camelli is a community activist, a mental heath supporter, and by many people’s standards, she’s most certainly a hero, but she doesn’t see herself that way. And that’s what she as a teacher should do.

【1】What does the underlined word “neediest” in the first paragraph mean?

    A.Liveliest.

    B.Paw Pantry gained much support.

C.Camelli was hopeful about Paw Pantry’s future.

D.Many people treated Paw Pantry with doubt.

【3】How does Blake feel about Ms. Camelli?

    A.Grateful.

    B.Annoyed.

    C.Unconcerned.

    D.Confused.

【4】What can we learn about Camelli from the last paragraph?

    A.She feels great about herself.

B.She won’t continue her teaching career.

C.She thinks that she just does what a teacher does.

D.She doesn’t think she has done enough.

  • 24、   The European Space Agency(ESP) wants to build a village on the moon, said Woerner, the head of the agency, in a video interview posted on its website on March 21.

“I would like to build a base station on the moon, meaning that it’s an open station...for different states around the globe,” Woerner said to Euronews. He said the village could replace the International Space Station(ISS) in the future, which will be ended in 2024. In December Nexgen Space, a consultant(咨询) company for NASA, said that a lunar refueling station could “reduce the cost to NASA of sending humans to Mars by as much as $10 billion per year.”

According to the ESA’s plan, starting from the early 2020s, robots will be sent to the moon to begin building different facilities (设备), followed a few years later by the first humans to live there. Instead of bringing expensive resources from Earth, the moon’s natural resources like metal and frozen water could be used to build the village.

Having a lunar base could be challenging because of space radiation(辐射), meteorite(陨石) and extreme temperatures from 123 to 153, according to CNN. But Woerner said these risks could be made smaller by choosing the right locations on the moon.

“If we go into the shadow on the moon, we’ll have places where we don’t have the radiation... At the South Pole, we can find water,” he said.

Right now, the moon village is just an idea. But as the BBC said, there is a growing interest in returning to the moon and the idea will be taken seriously.

“Inside all of us there is something that goes beyond being practical,” Woerner said. “We like to discover. This is humankind and this is what brings us into the future.”

1What is most likely to happen after robots finish building different facilities?

A.Humans will be sent to Mars.

B.Humans will be sent to live on the Moon.

C.Expensive resources will be sent to the moon.

D.International Space Station(ISS) will be ended..

2According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a risk for living on the moon?

A.It is too hot to live there.

    B.There is too much radiation.

C.It's too far away from the earth.

D.There may be rocks landing from outer space.

3Based on the last paragraph, what may be the reason for humans to build a moon village?

    A.Humans are very practical.

B.Humans want to experience the future.

C.Humans don’t like to stay in the same place.

D.Humans are nature-born to explore the unknown.

4Which of the following best describes the purpose of this passage?

    A.To inform. B.To analyze. C.To persuade. D.To criticize.
