  • 21、   The Swedish Academy has named Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature. It also announced that it was honoring Austrian Peter Handke with the 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature. The Academy cancelled the prize last year after many members fled the organization following sexual abuse accusations linked to it.

The Academy said it awarded Tokarczuk for imaginative writing that “represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.”

The Polish writer’s first published work came in 1989, a book of poetry called Cities in Mirrors. Her first novel, The Journey of the Book-People, was published in 1993. Last year, Tokarczuk became the first Polish writer to win Britain’s Man Booker Prize for International Literature for her novel Flights. • 22、   As a young child, Ann Makosinski would spend hours experimenting with her toys and other everyday objects ar ound her to create her own inventions.

Now a first-year Arts student, Makosinski is a well-known inventor. She won the recent Sustainable Entrepreneurship Award of Excellence, which recognizes creative business solutions to social problems--the same recognition was given to Barack Obama in 2014. Her two inventions—the Hollow Flashlight and the e-Drink—have been causing excitement internationally since their creation.

When Makosinski was 15 years old, she created a flashlight powered by the heat of one's hand. This invention was the result of a 9th grade science project, but her goal was to offer a practical solution to people with unlimited access to power and electricity. “One of my friends from the Philippines told me that she failed school because she had no light to study with at night, so that was kind of the inspiration.” Makosinski explained.

At 12th grade, Makosinski then went on to create the e-Drink. It is a coffee cup that harvests the extra heat of a hot drink while it cools, stores it as electricity in an internal(内置的)battery and makes it available to charge an external device such as a phone, whose life can now be longer by approximately 10 to 30 minutes.

My favorite part of creating inventions would be when you had the idea and you have to physically build itand it doesn't work out,” she said. “So you have to figure out different ways to solve it. A lot of times, I'll give up and I’ll come back after a couple of days and I'll take it up again.”

Her advice to other student innovators? “Start now. There’s nothing holding you back. Actually, you can do whatever you want.” Makosinski said“If you want to make somethingfollow your heart, then go ahead. If there's something you really want to do, you will make time for it and you will find time in the day to do your  schoolwork.”

1Makosinsky created the powerless flashlight mainly to ________.

    A. satisfy her desire to create inventions

    B. settle problems in study for her friend

    C. help those who are short of electricity

    D. finish the assignment of a science project

2Which of the following is mainly explained in paragraph 4?

    A. How the e-Drink was invented. B. Why the e-Drink was created.

    C. What the e-Drink brings. D. How the e-Drink works.

3Which can be the best title for this passage?

    A. Popular Inventions by a Teenager Girl

    B. Teenager Girl Advancing in Creation

    C. Valuable Advice from a Creative Girl

  • 23、   Throughout history it has been the individualists, like Henry Ford and Rosa Parks, who have led nations, formed common groups, and made the greatest influence. However, people, such as the author, Michael Walzer, of Multiculturalism and Individualism, condemn the independent person as an unreliable and empty creature. This criticism of the socially unlimited human is the fearful reaction to the power that these individuals can possess. Nevertheless, strong individuals form the foundation of the world progress in technological and social fields because of their willingness to question and create.

Individualists have always been more involved with technological advances than the communitarian (社群主义者). It has been the person, unstopped by other people’s familiar opinion that has given the most creative and helpful of inventions. A brief look into history reveals names such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and, more recently, Bill Gates who have improved and contributed to the comfort of humanity. These individuals were often criticized for their self-interest work, but when the products of their imagination changed the lives of humans around the world the dissatisfied voices quieted.

Individualists are more socially persuasive than the faceless members of self-interest groups. History disclosed the fact that it is the individual that empowers the people. I ask you, what are ten important interest groups that had a positive influence on America in the nineteenth century? This is a difficult question. However, if the words interest groups are replaced with individuals, the answer would be relatively easy. Michael Walzer claims that individuals are just trash floating aimlessly away from every creative center. But, it is the strange individualists who have the power to create the groups and the fact is that every group is a product of individualists. So by arguing for wiping out individualistic thought a group is actually cutting their own lifeline.

Individualists are the largest and most important contributors to society. The fear of change doesn’t change that fact. Society has always condemned the different, strange, and unusual person when in actuality that person is the source for the advancement of society itself.

1What attitude does Michael Walzer have to individualists in his book?

    A.Optimistic. B.Objective. C.Negative. D.Positive.

2Why are Bill Gates and Edison more creative according to the author?

A.They don’t follow the traditional ideas.

B.They are more constructive to the society.

C.They are more likely to stick to old ideas.

D.They dislike the main stream society.

3What can be inferred from paragraph 3?

A.Individualists make the majority of groups.

B.Most group members are usually creative.

C.The life of a group lies with individualists.

D.Individualists should be removed from groups.

4What’s the purpose of the passage?

A.To call on people to contribute to the society

B.To stress the importance of individualists

    C.To criticize the individualists

D.To tell the difference between individualists and groups

  • 24、Something was in the air. All his senses told White Fang that some big change was about to come. “Listen to that!” said Matt. Through the open door came a low, anxious howl, like a sobbing under the breath.

The truth was that Scott was torn. He was miserable at the idea of leaving White Fang, but he knew a dog like him needed the wide-open spaces of the frozen North. Five or six times he changed his mind. But in the end he decided firmly against taking him. He told himself, “He would hate living in a city, anyway.”

Then came the day when White Fang saw his master pack and take two large bags out of the cabin. “Poor fellow,” said Scott, gently rubbing White Fang’s ears. “I’m hitting the trail, old boy, I’ve got a new job in California, where you can’t follow. Now give me your howls. A goodbye howl!” But White Fang wouldn’t howl. He gave his master a wistful, searching look and buried his head out of sight, between his master’s arm and body.

Matt locked the door. Scott wiped his eyes. “Take good care of him, Matt,” he said, “Write and let me know how he gets on.” “Sure,” replied Matt. “But listen to that!” Both men stopped. White Fang was howling inside. His howl burst upwards, dying down into trembling misery. It rose again and again.

Near the steamship, Scott said goodbye to Matt and was to have a final handshake with Matt. But Matt’s hand dropped. He stared at something behind them. Sitting on the deck and watching wistfully was White Fang! “Did you lock the door?” asked Scott. “Sure did.” Said Matt. As Scott patted the dog, he noticed blood on his nose and a fresh cut between his eyes. “We forgot the window!” he cried. “He’s all cut up. Must have made his way clean through the glass!”

The steamship whistled its final. Scott bent down to White Fang, “Howl for me now, you stupid, brave fellow!” White Fang knew he had won. He howled and nuzzled his beloved master for all he was worth.

【1】Why doesn’t Scott take White Fang at first?

    A.Because life stress outweighs reality.

B.Because he blocks his pursuit of career.

C.Because he dislikes the city environment.
