二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Everyone has a phone in their pocket nowadays, but how often do we really use them for their original purpose — to make a call? Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects?

“No one picks up the phone anymore,” wrote Alex C. Madrigal on The Atlantic. “The reflex (习惯性动作) of answering — built so deeply into people who grew up in 20th-century telephonic culture — is gone.”

The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction Gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.

Texting is light and fun, not nearly as demanding of your attention as a phone call. It can also be done with multiple people at the same time. Social media, email and video calls have also eaten away at traditional phone calls.

In recent years, another reason has caused people to ignore phone calls completely: robocalls. Robocalls are automated messages from organizations verifying (核实) your phone number or telemarketers trying to sell something. Americans received 22.8 billion robocalls halfway through 2020, equaling an annual rate of 45.6 billion, slightly below 2018 numbers, according to You-Mail, a robocall protection service and blocking app.

As telephone culture disappears, what is the loss of a singular family phone doing to the family unit? Early landline phones unified family members, whereas mobile phones isolate (使隔绝) them.

“The shared family phone served as an anchor (给以安全感的物品) for home,” said Luke Fernandez, a Weber State University computer-science professor and co-author of Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid: Feelings About Technology, From the Telegraph to Twitter. With smartphones, “we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been diminished, as has its capacity to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps bind families more closely together,” Femandez said.

Of course, as technology progresses, lives always change for better or for worse. With the loss of telephone culture, families will need to find other ways to unite.

【1】What has caused the traditional telephone to lose its appeal according to the text?

    A.People’s addiction to social media.

    B.People’s preference for robocalls.

    C.People’s growing need for privacy.

D.People’s wide range of communication choices.

【2】What does the underlined word “diminished” in the last but one paragraph probably mean?

    A.Reduced.

    B.Strengthened.

    C.Instructed.

    D.Inherited.

【3】What does Luke Fernandez point out?

    A.Smartphones tie families together.

B.The use of mobile phones has affected family bonds.

C.Smartphones help people monitor family behavior.

D.The value of home depends on how phones are used.

【4】What does the article mainly talk about?

A.The past and future of telephones.

    B.The development of communication tools.

C.The downfall of traditional telephone culture.

D.The relation between phone use and family bonds.

  • 22、Sachin oza always seemed to catch whatever cold and flu germs were flying around. Despite being only in his mid-thirties, he felt out of shape and out of sorts. He realized that if he didn’t make some changes, his immune function would continue worsening with age. “I have a family background of diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease,” adds Oza. “I had to take action.”

But Oza’s lifestyle stood in the way. He clocked long days working in finance in London, with little opportunity to be active or focus on his well-being. His commute from his home in Orpington, Kent, to the office was stressful and time-consuming, and he was spending far too many hours stuck behind his desk.

Oza’s increasingly sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle had repercussions. In addition to catching bugs easily, he lacked energy, his body ached, and he felt lethargic. “My immune system was really weak,” recalls Oza. “I knew that I shouldn’t be feeling this way before even hitting 40.”

So he began a 15-year journey to examine his health fully. He conducted some changes to his diet, introducing more raw fruits and vegetables and cutting down on junk food. He started going for runs and began regular training, resistance training, and stretching. He also became interested in mindfulness, practising deep-breathing and meditation.

Now 49, Oza feels like a new man. “I catch colds far less frequently than before,” he says. His aches and pains have eased, his stress levels are lower, and he sleeps soundly. “I no longer wake up in the early hours, which has made a huge difference in how I feel.”

There are many factors affecting the immune system that we can’t control — ageing weakens our immune function, for example, and we have individual genetic differences that affect how we deal with diseases.

【1】What was the barrier for Oza to make changes before?

    A.His immune system.

    B.His family background.

    C.His unfavourable lifestyle.

    D.His weak health situation.

【2】What does the underlined word “lethargic” mean?

    A.Puzzled.

    B.Sleepy.

    C.Unconfident.

    D.Energetic.

    【3】How has Oza regained health?

    A.By taking a 15-year journey.

B.By giving up his job in London.

C.By eating raw fruits and vegetables.

D.By changing diets and keeping training.

【4】What do you think of Oza according to his experience?

    A.Busy.

    B.Determined.

    C.Intelligent.

    D.Dull.

  • 24、   Jon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a store carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash. The Plano, Texas, detective, dressed in plain clothes but wearing his badge (徽章) and gun, caught the man and pinned him to the hood of his car. But Hoffman had trouble containing the thief, and they got into a struggle.

“The detective has a martial arts background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a martial arts background, too, because he was able to break away so easily,” a Plano police spokesperson said.

The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching: Andre Harvey and Kirby Sample, two day laborers. Harvey did what has become common these days—he took out his phone and hit record. “I hate to say it, but I thought that this policeman was doing something illegal,” Harvey said. “But when he asked for help, I thought, well, there won’t be a shooting if I get over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action—while he was still recording the video—as did Sample.

“Harvey caught hold of the suspect’s arms, while Kirby seized his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs (手铐) on,” said the police spokesperson. The 27-year-old suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than $ 50.

“I’ve been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life,” Harvey told WFAA. “It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive.”

After the arrest, the three men got to know each other over steaks and ribs at a local steak house—Hoffman’s treat, as a thank-you. But the rescuers say Hoffman deserves credit too. “It could have turned real ugly.” Sample told the media “He handled himself like a real professional.”

1What made Hoffman call for help when arresting the suspect?

    A. He was not on duty. B. He needed witnesses to support him.

    C. He wanted to push the thief into the car. D. He couldn’t control the suspect.

2Why did Harvey and Kirby record the scene at the beginning?

    A. To follow the fashion. B. To keep track of the criminal.

    C. To record the detective’s violence. D. To avoid being involved in the incident.

3What can be inferred about Harvey?

    A. He was ready to violate the law. B. He might have had some illegal behaviour.

    C. He was out of work at that time. D. He had a good martial arts background.

4What is Harvey and Sample’s attitude towards Hoffman?

    A. Appreciative. B. Prejudiced.

    C. Skeptical. D. Cautious.
