二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、No matter where you are, you can be connected via your mobile phone number, email address or social media accounts. 【1】 What can you do to minimize these digital distractions and increase your focus? Below are some tips that can help you.

Turn on “Don’t disturb” when you study. If you want to get the most out of your study time, you must reduce distractions. I like spending about 30 minutes reading by using the Kindle app. 【2】 Because of this, I can focus completely on my reading.

Change your mind. One social issue in today’s world is the fear of missing out, which causes us to feel the need to be “connected”. That is one of the main causes of digital distractions. 【3】 You can do this by checking your messages and email before study.

【4】 Seriously, you can do this. You don’t have to be always available. When you tell people that you aren’t available, they will respect your time. No one will force you to be available because no one can control your life.

Turn your “should do” into a “must do”. We all have things we should do. All these “shoulds” pile up and never get done because they aren’t priorities. “Should-dos” have no urgency attached to them, so they fall to the bottom of the pile of things we want to do. When you change a “should” to a “must”, it becomes a priority. 【5】

A.I have no social apps on the phone.

B.Tell others that you won’t be available.

C.These cause what we call “digital distractions”.

D.I have also equipped other apps to help me study.

E.You must prevent this from entering your study time.

F.No one can avoid them during the daily working periods.

G.You will free yourself from distractions and spend more time learning.

  • 22、Dear Jim O’Connor,

My name is Annie Le and I am writing to you on behalf of the Native Health Community Garden, a group of people working on starting a community garden in the Mesa Neighborhood.

While searching for potential garden locations, we came across your house located at West Southern Avenue. We are asking about the possibility of using your land as the site of our garden.

In general, a community garden is a space where plants are grown and taken care of by a group of people in the community. Community gardens improve the quality of life, offer more chances to talk to each other and beautify neighborhoods while providing green food and therefore reducing the household cost of food.

To ensure the smooth running of the project, elected volunteers would be in charge. You would have access to all these volunteers and they would like to answer any questions you may have.

I have included some general information about community gardens and what they can bring to a community. We would love to speak with you in person or over the phone to discuss what hosting community garden on your land would involve. Issues may include discussing an agreement rental charges, garden rules, and water access. All the costs for the project will be covered by us. We would also like to present to you our vision of this space.

We would very much like to have your support. Thank you for your consideration and please feel free to contact me. Thank you again.

    Respectfully,

    Annie Le

    A.To rent his land.

    B.To offer him a job.

【2】According to the passage, what will the garden bring to the community?

    A.More green projects.

    C.More communication.

    D.Higher cost of living

【3】Annie Le would like to further discuss ______.

    FACELESS

    by Alyssa B. Sheinmel

This is an amazing book about a girl named Maisie, who gets in an accident, and ends up having a face transplant. Part of Maisie’s face got burnt off in a fire, so now she has her cheeks and nose replaced by a different girl’s cheeks and nose. However, if you think about it, the idea seems quite scary. All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and it had me hanging on its every word.

WE ARE ALL MADE OF MOLECULES

    by Susin Nielsen

The story focuses on two main characters, Stewart and Ashley. Despite missing his mother, Stewart decides to make a new life with Ashley when he and his dad move into her house. Ashley doesn’t like Stewart for his personality, but things turn even more complicated when a schoolmate, Jared, enters their lives. I LOVE this book because it teaches us that if we all put aside all of our differences, we can work together to solve problems in the world, no matter how big or small the problem might be.

    HOUSE OF WINDOWS

This book is about a 15-year-old boy named Nick who is at Cambridge University. While there he faces many problems, he is not helped by the fact that his mum is dead and his dad cares more for his work than for him. Luckily, this book has a happy ending.

    MIND YOUR HEAD

  • 24、   Winona Ryder was once one of Hollywood’ s biggest stars. During the 1990s, she received critical praise and box office success. And in 2000, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But then it went wrong. In December 2001, she was arrested for shoplifting. She was caught leaving a Beverly Hills department store carrying thousands of dollars worth of clothes. Her sentence? 480 hours of community service in hospital. Afterwards, Winona quit acting for a few years. And she moved from los Angeles to San Francisco to get out of the spotlight. But now she’s on a comeback. She recently appeared in the award-winning Black Swan.

Bill Gates doesn’t seem like a bad boy. But on 29th April 1975 (just two weeks after founding Microsoft) he was arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico. What for? Speeding and driving without a driver’s license. But Bill’s rap sheet doesn’t end there. In 1977 he was arrested again, this time for speeding, driving his Porsche through a stop sign road and, once again, driving without a license.

Bill has never commented on his wild past. But a Microsoft spokesperson said, “It’s well known that when Bill was young, he didn’t have a very good driving record.”

Can someone with a criminal record become president of the Unite States? They certainly can. And George W. Bush did. In 1976, the 30-year old Bush was drinking in a bar near his parents’ house. A few hours later, he decided to drive home. But on the way, a police officer pulled him over. Bush had been driving suspiciously slowly. The future president was arrested for drunk driving. Bush kept his arrest secret for 24 years. But it leaked to the press just before the 2000 presidential election (which he won). He admitted it was true and said he had learned his lesson that night.

1What punishment was given to Winona Ryder after she was caught shoplifting?

A.She was forbidden acting for a few years.

B.She was put in prison for 480 hours.

C.She did community service for 480 hours.

D.She was forgiven for her outstanding acting skills.

2What is the meaning of the underlined part “rap sheet”?

    A.Criminal record. B.Careless behavior.

    C.Sentence. D.Impolite behavior.

3How did the police know George W. Bush was drunk driving?

A.The police were checking drunk driving and caught him by chance.

B.Bush was driving so slowly as to cause the police’ s suspicion.

C.Bush drove through a stop sign.

D.Bush drove in the wrong direction.

4What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Some famous people without morality.

B.Some famous people and their life stories.

C.Some interesting stories of famous people.

    D.Some arrests of famous people.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.

Nada Popovici was at a professional hockey (曲棍球) game. She kept looking at the back of the man’s neck. She wrote a message with the words “mole (痣)”“cancer” and “doctor” on her phone in bright red type. She did it to get the attention of the man, Brian Hamilton. He is an assistant equipment manager for the Vancouver Canucks hockey team.

Mr. Hamilton had a small mole on his neck. It was irregularly shaped and red-brown. These are the signs of a cancerous mole that Ms. Popovici had learned to spot. Maybe he already knew? But if so, why was the mole still there? She thought that Mr. Hamilton did not know.

“I need to tell him.” Ms. Popovici typed a message on her phone. The game ended. After waving at him several times, she finally drew Mr. Hamilton's attention. She placed her phone against the glass. The message read, “The mole on the back of your neck is possibly cancerous. Please go see a doctor!”

Mr. Hamilton looked at the message, rubbed the back of his neck, and kept walking. He was thinking, “Well, that’s strange.”

After the game, Mr. Hamilton went home and asked his partner to spot the mole, and she said she could. He asked the team doctor if it was worrisome. It was. Then after he had it removed, he waited for the biopsy (活检) results. Was the fan sitting behind the team's bench right?

Indeed, Ms. Popovici was correct. She had saved Hamilton’s life. Doctors later told him that it was a type of skin cancer. They said they could remove with ease and treat. But early detection is important. “The sooner you find something, the better it is,” a doctor said.

Mr. Hamilton recalled the doctor telling him, “I am going to diagnose you with cancer. And I am going to cure you of cancer in the same phone call.”

Once he knew he was fine, Mr. Hamilton tried to find the woman he described as “a hero”.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
