Her business, Lemon Topia, is a hit, which her teacher said was surprising. She makes pies, cakes and cookies besides lemonade.

Jamaria built LemonTopia herself with the help of Mom. “I’m a teacher and had no time to help her at first. So she had begged for a lemonade stand for a year or two before I let her do it.” said Jasmine Hall Jamaria’s mother.

Jamaria’s school announced a baking sale in 2016 that was a perfect chance to try out Jamaria’s plan for a lemonade stand. Jamaria made cookies and cakes. After the baking sale, she kept selling at school and community events Now she has her own business at a street market.

Of course, Jamaria pays for her own costs. She has to buy the materials and also pays her mother for rides and working for the stand. Hall says Jamaria does not like the cleaning up. “I make her wash all of her own dishes. That’s a constant battle.” Hall said.

  • 22、“I like pop songs better before I actually got a chance to sing hua’er at the age of 19,” said Sa Lina, 36, who has since become a famous singer, devoting herself to this traditional art form for almost two decades.

Hua’er, which means flower in Chinese, is a Chinese folk song style. It is popular and shared by people of nine ethnic groups in Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang for hundreds of years. Also known as a type of “mountain songs”, it was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

After graduating in 2005, Sa returned to her hometown in Ningxia, and soon got a chance to sing with Ma Handong, a famous singer of hua’er. “I had never sung hua’er before, so I practiced a lot.To my surprise, I soon fell in love with its beautiful melodies,” said Sa.

Since then, Sa has devoted herself to mastering the folk art, and further bringing this traditional local folk art to the national stage. In 2010, she sang a hua’er song at a gala on Chinese New Year’s Eve, winning nationwide attention. At the age of 27, she was named an inheritor of hua’er, becoming the youngest inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage at the time.

“Art should not only be inherited, but also improved. I don’t only want to be a hua’er singer, but also a promoter of this folk music,” she said. In 2014 Sa set up an art school, which offers hua’er training courses free of charge. • 23、No. A tiny, yet powerful word. To hear it can make us feel childlike; sheepish or in trouble. How does it make you feel to say “no”?

“We live in a society that does not glorify choosing yourself. It is not honored,” says relationship therapist Nedra Tawwab. “We are constantly living in others’ headspace and not our own heart space. We’re thinking about whether they’ll be angry, or whether setting a boundary will even end the relationship.”

It is normal to care, “but when your life is impacted by not having healthy boundaries for yourself, we need to pay attention”, says Tawwab.

When there is hierarchy of power-such as in the workplace-saying no can feel particularly difficult. But as the border between work and the rest of our lives has become increasingly unclear, it is even more vital. “Research tells us that people who proactively state their boundaries, such as leaving or stopping work on time, taking leave or prioritizing non-work-related activities, are much better at managing their mental health,” says Dr. Jo Yarker, an occupational psychologist.

Do we misuse the word “selfish” when people are clear about their needs? “I think we do, yes,” says Tawwab, “we need to think about what is actually being harmed when we use that word. If I am taking a day off work, that’s not the same as stealing someone’s credit.”

The key is practicing saying “no” or “enough” in conversations like we are learning a new skill. “We can start with little boundaries like: ‘I will call you back,’ if we aren’t ready to speak to someone at that time. With practice, confidence does build. It can become easy,” Tawwab adds.

【1】According to Nedra Tawwab, we ________.

A.will not be honored if we sound childlike

B.need to set up boundaries if our life is affected by always saying yes

C.might get into trouble if we say “no” to a friend

D.should not care whether other people will be angry

【2】The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to “________”.

    A.saying “no”

B.the border between work and life

    C.stopping working on time

    D.hierarchy of power

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.People who care more about themselves tend to suffer mentally.

B.Sometimes people may be considered selfish if they put their own needs first.

C.Taking a day off work definitely does harm to others.

D.You should learn a new skill when you practice setting up boundaries.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Yes or No

    B.Choosing Yourself

    C.Learning to Build Boundaries

    D.Selfish or Selfless

  • 24、Frankenstein

Frankenstein was a book by Mary Shelly --- it’s been adapted for the screen dozens of times. The story of Frankenstein is told through a series of letters written by Captain Robert Walton to his sister, as he leads an expedition (远征)to the North Pole. On the way, he meets Victor Frankenstein, who tells Walton the story of his life. Frankenstein is the surname of the guy who creates the monster. The monster doesn’t actually have a name. Anyway, Victor is a scientist who’s desperate to discover the secret of life. After years of study, he makes an enormous creature out of human remains and brings it to life. Victor intends it to be beautiful. Unfortunately, the creature turns out really hideous, and Victor runs away in terror. Although the monster is good and kind, humans are scared of it. When they mistreat it, the monster becomes angry and evil. Wanting revenge on its creator, the monster murders Dr. Frankenstein’s brother, his wife, and his best friend. When Victor figures out the monster is behind all the deaths, he swears to track it down and kill it.

This book was written in 1816, right after a period called the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment emphasized the pursuit of knowledge and reason, and gave rise to the scientific method. Mary Shelley criticized the Enlightenment through the character of Victor Frankenstein,“He is a negative example of an Enlightenment scientist --- he pursues knowledge at any cost, and his obsession with discovering the secret of life destroys him, as well as his friends and family.” Some Enlightenment thinkers might have seen such a loss as necessary for the advancement of science, but not Mary Shelley. She and her husband, poet Percy Shelley, were part of the Romantic Movement in art and literature. Romanticism was a reaction against the Enlightenment’s embrace of rationality and reason. The Romantics emphasized emotion over rationality, and thought people should feel awe and terror in regard to nature. Frankenstein incorporates all these ideas. To Shelley, Frankenstein doesn’t fear and respect the world of nature enough--- she says that by tampering with nature, he brings about complete disaster. Frankenstein is not just a great Romantic novel. It’s also considered one of the first major works of science fiction. It influences a whole generation of writers, and the monster has become one of the most recognizable figures in Western culture.
