21、The reasons skiers and snowboarders wear goggles or glasses might seem a little obvious, especially if you’ve ever hit the slopes yourself. Sunlight reflected off the snow can make it hard to see, and UV rays can even damage your eyesight. Special colored lenses also create contrast, so your whole path won’t look like one flat expanse of whiteness.【1】
Olympic speed skaters, meanwhile, are racing inside on smooth ice. 【2】
According to NBC Olympics, glasses can increase visibility on indoor tracks, too. 【3】 And while the ice may look smooth from a distance, those sharp blades can kick up ice chips that could pose problems if they end up in your eyes. In the event of a crash, shatter-proof glasses also protect skaters’ eyes from errant blades and body parts.
【4】 Shot-track speed skaters (who race around a roughly 11-meter track) can go as fast as 30 miles per hour or more, and long-track speed skaters (whose track is 400 meters long) sometimes hit about 35 miles per hour. The wind resistance generated by such speed- in a chilly arena—is enough to make any skater’s eyes start streaming with tears. Picture leaning your head out the window of a car that’s going around 35 miles per hour on a cold day: You’d probably want to be wearing glasses, too.
That said, glasses aren’t a requirement. 【5】 Belgium’s Stijn Desmet, for example, has raced in Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games without eyewear, as has China’s Zhang Chutong.
A.How do they wear glasses?
B.So why do they wear glasses?
C.Some skiers are afraid of the sunlight.
D.Some skaters’ lenses are tinted to help with that.
E.You’ll occasionally see speed skaters with uncovered visages.
F.Not to mention that eyewear shields your eyes from any snow you displace.
G.But the biggest reason speed skaters opt for eyewear just might be their speed.
22、Another horrible shooting took place in the United States on Tuesday just days after the one in Buffalo, New York. The shooter shot his grandmother first and then killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in the city of Uvalde, Texas.
Speaking on Tuesday night from the White House, US President Joe Biden said, “And we must ask when in God’s name will we do what needs to be done to, if not completely stop, fundamentally change the amount of carnage that goes on in this country. It’s time for action.”
Yes, it is high time that action was taken to stop such carnage. In 2012, a lone gunman went crazy through Sandy Hook primary school — killing six adults and 20 children. Afterward there were loud calls for gun control similar to those being voiced today. Former president Barack Obama has tried to do everything to act and the Democrats proposed enhancing background checks. Some of the measures received Republican support, but it proved impossible to get them through Congress and into law.
Something is so clearly wrong with the political system in the US that such a popular move cannot be carried out. Almost 20 million guns were sold legally in the US in 2020, and the figure was nearly 19 million in 2021. The total economic value of the gun industry in the US increased from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $63.5 billion in 2019, a 232-percent increase, according to a report by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The gun industry paid nearly $7 billion in business taxes.
With the huge interests behind the gun industry, it would be naive to believe that any effective action will ever be possible to put people’s lives first. When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun gun control? Not until the political system in the US is reformed to treat its disorder.
【1】Which one of the following statements is True?

23、 In March,2021, the much-loved children's author Beverly Cleary passed away at age 104.Cleary's writing changed the world of children's books by showing that stories about the lives of ordinary kids could be interesting, funny, and popular.
Cleary was born in 1916. As a child, she had trouble learning to read. Even after she learned to love reading, she felt like the people she was reading about didn't have much to do with her and her life, which were unattractive to her. She wanted to read funny books about children like herself.
When she grew up, Cleary realized there weren't many books about ordinary kids. So she set out to write them at age 30 and tried to get kids hooked on reading since she found they didn't show much interest in books.
Cleary's first book, Henry Huggins, came out in 1950. It tells the story of a boy and the dog that he takes in. Soon Cleary wrote more books about Henry Huggins and the other children in his neighborhood. Ramona Quimby, also known as Ramona the Pest, became Cleary's best known book. The Mouse and the Motorcycle tells the exciting story of a motorcycle-riding mouse and his friendship with a young boy. But that sort of fantasy was unusual for Cleary, who usually focused on real life. In several books, the parents have money trouble or are unhappy with their jobs. Dear Mr, Henshaw tells the story of a boy dealing with his parents’ breaking-off.
Cleary had kept writing for 53 years, creating over 40 books in all. She won almost every award there was for children's books, including the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. Though Cleary is no longer with us, her characters and stories will be loved and shared for years to come.

B.To learn from.
C.To deeply enjoy.
D.To easily provide.
【3】Which of the following is a fantasy?
A.Dear Mr. Henshaw.
B.The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

24、 Being able to find high quality healthcare at an affordable price is a problem to be solved in many countries. In the United States, Walmart, a large chain store, is trying to help. It is offering something new to its employees: cutting the cost of a doctor’s appointment(预约) to only $4 instead of the usual $40 for the same service.
Walmart is the latest major business in the United States to push its workers toward a high-tech way to be examined and treated by doctors. Thanks to telemedicine (远程医疗), people can talk with medical experts from the privacy of their own homes, often using a secure video connection.
Supporters say online visits make it easier for patients to see an expert or quickly find help for problems considered non-emergencies. Some healthcare needs are well-suited for telemedicine. It can help people seek treatment for insect bites or skin conditions. Patients who have had medical treatments and cannot move around easily can use telemedicine for their follow-up visits. Also, people seeking help for mental health issues can benefit from the privacy that telemedicine gives.
But still, many people do not use telemedicine, they continue to go to the doctor’s office when they are sick. 80 percent of middle-size and large U.S. companies offered telemedicine services to their workers in 2018. However, only 8 percent of its employees used telemedicine at least once in 2017. Compared with seeing a real doctor in person, some people may think the quality of telemedicine is not as good. Parents, for example, may feel they are not giving their child the best care if they use a virtual doctor appointment. Another reason some adults may not use telemedicine services is trust. Tom Hill, aged 66, says he has no plans to ever use telemedicine. He says, for him, it is important to look at his doctor in the eye and shake hands.
However, for some people, especially young people and busy students, telemedicine might be a good choice. It can cut down on the time away from work. It can also cut down on the cost of doctor visits.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After spending Thanksgiving on Uncle Howard’s farm, he gave us two turkey eggs. My younger brother Chris was so excited that he nearly dropped his egg on the way home. Dad put the eggs under an old hen in our backyard. Every day Chris and I would check to see if they’d hatched yet. 26 days later, two little creatures waddled (摇摇摆摆地走) behind the hen. As they got older, one was dead. We named the other Timothy.
Timothy liked to wander in the woods and find tasty berries and weed seeds. Mom kept telling us not to get too attached to Timothy, because we were going to have him for Thanksgiving. But we never paid too much attention to what that really meant. One day, Dad gave Chris and me instructions. “I want you to start giving him corn along with his regular feed,” he said. “We want a nice fat bird for Thanksgiving.” After Dad walked away, Chris’s face began to pucker, just as he did before he started to cry.
“Don’t worry, Chris,” I said comfortingly. “We’ll save Timothy, somehow.”
“Why don’t we give him away?” Chris suggested.
“No.” I said. “If we do, he’ll just end up on someone else’s Thanksgiving table.” Suddenly I had an idea. “Hey, Chris, you know that small cave in the woods?” Chris nodded. “We can take Timothy there. We’ll cover the entrance with a wire net and hide him till Thanksgiving is over.” “Yeah!” We were so excited that we gave each other high-fives. We took Timothy out of his cage and left him in the cave with water and plenty of food. We piled branches over the opening to hide the entrance.
One day Dad sent us out to look for him. Both of us felt guilty, but we wanted to save Timothy’s life, so we kept quiet. Finally, Dad decided that a fox must have gotten him. That year Uncle Howard provided a turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner. The next day a big snowstorm hit. It was days before we could get out and see Timothy. When we got to the cave, we saw something had happened.
