24、If you had asked scientists whether monkeys and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) had a sense of right and wrong before they had a deep study on monkeys, they would have told you that it seemed very impossible.
It was believed that only humans can imagine the future. Some people were told that most monkeys are cleverer than most dogs. Besides, if all dogs seem down when they’ve done something bad, you’d have been told that dogs learn such action so as to please their owners. It doesn’t mean that dogs understand why their owners might be angry at them. It doesn’t mean that animals can think about the future.
Now, however, it appears that chimpanzees and monkeys may be able to think about the future. Santino is a chimpanzee who lives at a zoo in Sweden. It is famous for his bad temper (脾气). Santino dislikes being looked at by visitors and he throws stones at them.
Before visitors walked into the zoo, he must have decided that he needed to be prepared for visiting days. He began collecting stones so that he would be fully ready to throw when people came to see him. The interesting thing was that Santino would only collect stones when visitors were expected. In winter, when the zoo was closed, he didn’t make troubles.
Santino’s action is a clear example of an animal planning for the future. It’s also an example of how we ought to check that “scientific” belief are based on facts rather than opinions. It seems likely that within ten years, we shall have formed a completely different view of animal intelligence (智力).
【1】What do scientists think of animals before? ________
A.Animals can understand their owners.
B.Animals can think about the future.
C.Animals can share people’s happiness and sadness.
D.Animals can’t know the right and wrong.
【2】Why did Santino collect many stones? ________
A.Because he wanted to build a wall.
B.Because he wanted to throw them at visitors.
C.Because the keeper asked him to do so.
D.Because he liked to play with stones.
【3】Which of the following is a fact but not a thought? ________
A.Dogs can understand their owners’ feelings.
B.Chimpanzee likes collecting all kinds of stones.
C.Santino’s action is a good example of animals thinking about the future.

【4】What is the best title for the passage? ________
A.Can animals talk?
B.Can animals think?
C.Do all animals have a bad temper?
D.Are animals cleverer than humans?
25、In a big amusement park, there were some students sitting on the ground. They were listening to a speech after spending a happy morning there. At the beginning of the speech, the speaker told them a story about himself. “When I was in middle school, our class was once asked to write about our dreams. That night I wrote down my dream of opening up an amusement park. However, my teacher gave me an “F” and told me to write again,” the speaker said. “Her reason was just that it was impossible for a poor boy to make such a dream come true. I went back home and asked my father what I should do. He told me to make the decision by myself. So I decided to make no changes. My teacher can keep the “F” and I’ll keep my dream.”
“And what happened?” the students asked. All of them were anxious to know more about the story.
“This is what happening now. You are listening to my speech in my dream park,” said the speaker. “I told you this story in order to make you know one thing: follow your heart, keep your dream and never let others destroy your dream.”
When the students were leaving the park, their teacher went over to the speaker. “Thank you, Mr. Black. I think my students have learned a lot from your speech. Here I have to say sorry to you. Some years ago, I was once a dream stealer and stole a lot of students’ dreams, including yours. But you didn’t give your dream up because of me,” she said and then left.

Luisa’s Letter
Luisa checked the mailbox. An eggshell-white envelope lay on top of all the letters. It was still there, thank goodness. She picked it and put it into her bag.
Upstairs, she handed the remaining letters to her mother. “How was school, Luisa?” Mom asked.
“It was fine,” said Luisa, giving her mother a quick hug.
In her room Luisa tried to focus on her English homework, but the letter called to her. It had traveled more places than she had. All her life, Luisa had lived in Seville, an ancient city in the southwest of Spain. Luisa loved her hometown, but she wanted to see the world.
A year abroad! What an attractive possibility! But Luisa couldn’t bring herself to raise the subject with her parents because her parents just wanted her to stay in Seville, get married, give them grandchildren. Last spring, on her own, she applied for(申请) a year of high school in England. Now, this envelope held her answer.
Luisa went to the kitchen to help with dinner. She asked, “Mom, do you ever think about traveling?
I mean, I want to. And maybe someday…live somewhere else.”
Luisa’s heart beat harder as she waited for her mother’s reaction. But Mom nodded. “Luisa, of course you’d like to travel. I want that for you and…”
Just then Dad arrived. When they sat down at the table to eat, Dad said, “Seville is the best, yes, my Luisa?” Luisa’s heart sank(为之一沉). Dad continued, “Why would people want to leave Seville?” Mom smiled, “When Luisa is old enough, we can discuss with her what’s best for her future.”
Dad raised an eyebrow but didn’t argue.
Luisa couldn’t wait any longer, but her parents’ easy chatter(聊天)was the sound of her childhood. She sank deeper into her chair and listened. Home would always be here. But when the time was right, she’d leave. And she wanted it to be with her parents’ support.
“Something came in the letter,” she said at last. “I want you to see.” She took out the letter. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” her voice was shaking. “I wanted this more than anything.” Luisa waved at the unopened envelope. “But only if you say it’s okay.”

【3】Luisa decided to tell her parents about the letter because________.

27、
Hey, everyone. I’m Wang Xue. Our topic(话题)today is _______. What do you think about it? If you have any opinions, welcome to share them. Thanks.
I think it is really noisy to set off firecrackers(爆竹). Some people set them off at midnight. People nearby cannot sleep well. It also creates air pollution and lots of rubbish. So I think there is no need to set them off.
Setting off firecrackers is a tradition during Chinese festivals. People set them off to wish a happy new year. We cannot give it up.
I like traveling. But the virus has made this more dangerous. I have to stay at home during the winter holiday. I am so boring.
I think we can improve firecrackers. We cannot set them off freely because now they are dangerous. But if we can make them safer and better for the air, we wouldn’t have to give them up.
I think we can use something else to replace them. For example, we can use LED fireworks instead. They are safer. Even kids can play with them. |

A.how to improve firecrackers

D.Setting off firecrackers causes many problems.

A.Shi Jia’s.
