24、 Shenzhen is a city in South China. It is not very big, but it has attracted people of the whole country and the whole world as well.
Many years ago, it was only a small fishing village. There were not many people there. Most of the people lived on fishing. Things have greatly changed since the early 1980s(20世纪80年代初). It became the first special economic zone(经济特区)in China.
Because of the open policy, economic exchanges between China and the outside world have increased greatly. People can come and go easily between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Both foreigners and Chinese have built a lot of factories, companies and tourist attractions there.
People all over the country have come to find jobs, many of them have settled down in this new booming(兴起的)city. Shenzhen is developing so fast that it has become a well—known metropolis(大都市)in China.

25、 “Your hair looks nice today.”
This is an example of a compliment. It feels nice when someone notices and praises you for something. But are there cultural differences in making compliments?
Sometimes I receive compliments for things that I don’t think it is worth. For example, when a taxi driver says “Wow, your Chinese is so good!” even though the only thing I said to him was “Hello, please take me to the airport.” It feels insincere to receive a compliment like this for saying just one simple sentence. However, I know he’s just trying to be polite.
It also seems like Chinese people are a bit more humble(谦虚的) than others when they receive a compliment. They often think little of the compliments they receive. I enjoy this quality, as people like this are more honest. I’ve noticed that older people are quite humble.
When and where should you give compliments? I try my best to compliment people in the service industry. People sometimes complain about the bad service in restaurants, stores and other places. But if I get good service, I’d love to compliment whoever served me, such as by saying “the food was delicious” or something like that. This will encourage them to continue to provide good service to others.

26、 This summer, thousands of visitors are walking in through a garden in the sky. It is right in the middle of New York City. They are enjoying a beautiful, new park called the High Line, which was built on old railway tracks.
After the railway was no longer used in 1980, wild plants, grass and trees began to grow between the tracks. A few people looked at this natural garden and saw something amazing. They worked to protect the area when others wanted to pull it down. Today, the High Line attracts up to 2 million visitors every year. This summer, the new part of the High Line started, almost doubling the park’s size to one mile.
The design of the park is special. The new part includes many activities for children. Young people can use building toys, including wood, wheels, ropes, gears and tools, to create one of a kind structures (构造). The toys don’t come with instructions. Instead, children use their imaginations to fashion houses, animals and machines.
“Everyone supporting the High Line project wanted the park to go around the city,” says Danya Sherman, director of public programs for the Friends of the High Line. The Friends of the High Line is the group that saved the railway from pulling down. Sherman believes that public spaces such as the High Line have the power to bring communities closer.
The park also gives visitors a chance to experience nature in the city. The designers have allowed the park to keep the overgrown feeling that it had when it was an unused track. If you visit, you can see birds, butterflies and many plants that grow in the northeastern United States.
The Friends of the High Line hope to make the park even larger, over an area that is still used as a rail yard. The High Line has also inspired projects in other cities, including Philadelphia, Chicago, and Amsterdam, where people hope to build new parks on old railway tracks.

27、
Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal-powered stoves.
One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the "Sol-4". "It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker."
The "Sol-4" works by reflecting(反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct(把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy.
Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much "friendlier" than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.
【1】This passage is mainly about ________.
A.solar cookers B.smoke pollution C.solar power experts D.breathing illnesses
【2】The "Sol-4" is mainly used to ________.
A.shorten the time of cooking
B.reduce the cost of making cookers

【4】From the passage, we can infer that ________.
A.the "Sol-4" will be designed in a smaller size
B.more Africans can use the solar cookers in the future
C.the "Sol-4" is the first product of the South African company
D.the African government will provide poor people with solar cookers
