Nowadays, more and more schools in China make rules making students wear school uniforms to school. Parents and teachers think it will create a better learning environment at school, but some students don’t like their school uniforms. So, what are school uniforms like in other parts of the world?
In Japan, boys in middle school wear uniforms called “ gakuran ”, which have dark jackets with stand-up collars(立领) and pants. Girls, on the other hand, wear uniforms called “sailor fuku”, which look like European naval(海军的) uniforms.
Most schools in England require students to wear school uniforms. Boys need to wear long grey or black pants, white shirts and school ties. Girls have the same clothes as boys, but they can wear skirts or summer school dresses during the summer term.
In the UK, uniforms were the custom throughout most of the 20th century, but now more and more public schools stop requiring students to wear uniforms. They think uniforms make students lose their personalities.
For children in many African countries, school uniforms can be a kind of pride, or a huge financial burden(经济负担). Many children have only one uniform, and that may be all the clothes they have.
In a word, love it or hate it, the school uniform is a part of growing up for children around the world, so you’d better enjoy your school uniform and your school life.

25、If you won a lottery and had lots of money, what would you do? Most people start by buying themselves things, such as a new car or a bigger TV.
Many people who win lots of money may suddenly find that they have a lot of socalled(所谓的)friends. The new friends they make may follow them for their money but they may also leave them when all the money is spent. Besides that, they can’t decide what to do with the money, so they try to think what they want. In the end, most people usually decide to save the money.
There are some lottery winners who decide to quit(辞职)their jobs, because they think they have enough money and don’t need to work any longer. Some big lottery winners make even bigger changes—they end their marriages. They think that winning a lot of money has suddenly made them more intelligent and more attractive(有吸引力的).So they feel that they have to be with a younger or more attractive man or woman.
They don’t know their new money is just a bit of luck. It can’t change everything.
Next time when you buy a lottery ticket, think about what you would like to do and what you wouldn’t like to do with the money if you won.

26、 Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
【1】Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
【2】By “more things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “__________”.
A.Destroy old buildings B.Put things in a different place
C.Choose new architectural styles D.Respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
【3】What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warm that we could end up living in caves.
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
27、I made a decision on the way down to the vacation beach cottage to meet my family. For two weeks, I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was reading a Biblical about husbands’ being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to say that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Mary at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.”
“Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little confused(困惑). After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Mary suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Mary’s been here with the kid all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the company where I am a manager, and a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that is how the whole vacation passed. I made a new decision to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Mary and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Mary looked at me with the saddest expression.
“What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with sadness, “Do you know something I don’t …”
“What do you mean? ”
“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I couldn’t help laughing.
“No, honey,” I said, holding her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”

【4】What made Tom change his mind to be with his family more?
A. His wife’s illness. B. His vacation to the beach.
