六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、

If you have ever had a cat, or have watched one of the many funny cat videos online, you'll know that cats have a mind of their own. A lot of the things they do are hard to understand—they like to climb up tall furniture, fit themselves in small spaces and attack(攻击) small objects for no reason at all.

Now scientists have managed to work out what exactly is going on in the brains of our little friends. According to Tony Buffington, a professor at Ohio State University in the US, cats' strange behavior(行为)largely comes from their way of life back in the wild. "Cats today still have many of the same natural abilities that allowed them to live in the wild for millions of years." he said in a TED Talk. "To them, our homes are their jungles(丛林)."

Cats' bodies and great balancing(平衡)abilities allow them to climb to high places to better look at the environment. Even though they don't have to hunt(猎食)any more in human houses, they still keep the old habit of observing the living room from, for example, the top of the fridge.

Cats' hunting abilities also make them attack small things like keys and USB drives.

In the wild, they hunt whatever they can get for food, and most of the animals they kill are small. However, a cat can also be prey. This explains why they like to stay in small spaces like drawers or washing machines—they are hiding, or they think they are hiding, from more dangerous animals. This is also why cats prefer a clean box: a dirty one with an unpleasant smell could easily show enemies where they are.

Knowing how cats' minds work is not only useful for better understanding them, it may also help cats' owners to better meet cats' needs. For example, owners could try to make climbing easier for cats by moving their furniture around. They could also use "food puzzles" to make eating feel more like hunting instead of just giving food to the cats.

1According to the passage, Tony Buffington agrees that ________.

A.cats' strange behavior is hard for people to understand

B.cats are more used to living in the wild than in humans' homes

C.cats' natural abilities are still helpful to make them get food today

D.cats act strangely mainly because of their natural abilities in the wild

2The word "prey" in Paragraph 4 probably means"________".

A.an animal that lives in the jungles

B.an animal that likes keeping itself clean

C.an animal that likes playing hiding games with people

D.an animal that becomes others' food after being hunted

3According to the writer, cats' owners can better meet cats' needs by ________.

A.creating hunting games at home B.giving them delicious food

C.making them go back to the wild D.putting them in the furniture

4What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To describe cats' past wild experience to readers.

B.To tell cat owners how to make life easier for cats.

C.To explain the reasons behind cats' strange behavior.

D.To compare cats' behavior in human homes with that in the wild.

  • 22、Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines provide passengers with food, but it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree?

To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers. However, according to some studies, a part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at a high altitude we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists find that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reduces one third of our taste buds (味蕾). So our taste buds become senseless. The sad fact, however, is that our noses don’t know it.

All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and hot food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless. Now there are many studies on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.

Scientists try their best, but it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

    根据短文内容选择最佳答案。

【1】What does “this problem” means in Paragraph 2?

A.Passengers stay long in the plane.

A.The change in air pressure reduces one third of our taste buds.

B.Airlines choose to eat hot food without salt.

C.Food on the plane tastes much better than that at home.

D.Passengers don’t like eating more delicious food.

【4】Why do scientists feel it hard to make food on the plane taste good?

A.The volunteers don’t know about food taste.

    B.The volunteers don’t understand them.

    C.They can’t find enough volunteers.

D.They can’t deal with the special environment

【5】What is the best title of the passage?

  • 23、   Chinese people are eating too much salt. On average, people in China eat about 10. 5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams recommended(建议)by Chinese Dietary Guidelines(2016).

China now has one of the highest salt intakes(摄入量) in the world. To fix this, China had the first salt reduction(减少) guide for its food industry.

If the guide is followed properly, the average salt intake for Chinese people will drop by 20 percent by 2030. The guide calls for food companies to lower the salt content in their products by improving their production techniques(技术) and adjusting(调整) flavors.

The salt we take in mainly comes from processed(加工的)food. For example, a 104-gram can of Lay’s classic potato chips has about 0. 66 grams of salt in it, which accounts for over 10 percent of the recommended daily salt intake. A 100-gram bag of Kangshifu instant noodles has nearly 2 grams of salt.

A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks(心脏病)and strokes(中风) the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Less salt leads to better health. And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in the United States found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, your taste buds(味蕾) will gradually get used to it and you will feel that your food tastes the same as it did before.

1What does the underlined word “this” refer to in the second paragraph?

    A. The average salt intake. B. The highest salt intake.

    C. The lowest salt intake. D. The recommended daily salt intake.

2What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

    A. Salt is bad for our body. B. Processed food has much salt.

    C. Processed food is delicious. D. Salt mainly comes from China.

3What will happen if people eat too much salt?

    A. It causes some illnesses. B. It is better for our health.

    C. It may make us run faster. D. It will help us improve our skills.

4What is the passage mainly about?

    A. China now has one of the lowest salt intakes in the world.

    B. Chinese people love eating salt very much.

    C. We usually like buying sweet food.

    D. People should eat less salt.

  • 24、   If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some “moving stars”. But they are not really stars. They are manmade satellites. And the biggest of all is the International Space Station(ISS). From May to July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the earth. And people can see it with their eyes during the time. The scientists want to live on the ISS. They think that the best way to learn more about space is to live there.

When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the things they have at home. Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most expensive program. Billions of dollars are spent on it every year.

Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration. “The ISS will be more useful some day. The ISS will help us understand the human body better, explore space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better,” said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist.

Sixteen countries are part of the space program: the US, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil, and 11 European countries. China isn't an ISS country, but it has helped with some of the experiments. In 2003, China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it.
