Many years ago, when I was in high school and working at weekends, I lost my wallet. That day, I needed to put gas in my car. I paid for the gas and then put my wallet on the front bumper(保险杠) and drove off. I didn't even have time to miss it when my phone rang. A man asked me if I had lost my wallet. I checked my bag and to my surprise, I had. He asked me to tell him what was in it. I did so. He then told me where to go to pick up my wallet.
As I drove to his house, I noticed the man's car. It was really special. I was thinking that there was no way this man could have easily got out of his car and got my wallet off the street. He had to pull over, get in his wheelchair, lower the lift, and then pick it up.
I thanked him like 10 times for finding my wallet. I didn't want to insult(冒犯)him by offering money but I really felt like offering something. So I asked him if there was anything I could do to repay his kindness, and he said, "Just pass it on". I said I would be certain to do that.
Well, one does not find many wallets and so it was about 10 years later that I found one. It took me several days to find the man to whom the wallet belonged. He lived in another state, about 60 miles away from where I found the wallet.
The young man was actually surprised that his money was still in the wallet and he tried to
hand me $20. I told him, "Thanks, but just pass it on."

25、Bill Fuller, the postman, whistled(吹口哨) cheerfully as he pushed his bike up the hill towards Mrs Dunley’s house. His work for the day was almost finished. His bag, usually quite heavy when he set out on his road, was empty now except for the letter that he had to deliver(递送) to Mrs Dunley. She lived over a mile from that village so that, when Bill had a letter for her, he always finished his day’s work much later. He did not mind this, however, because she never failed to ask him in for a cup of tea.
When Bill entered the gate of Mrs Dunley’s house, he was surprised not to find her working in the garden. She usually spent most afternoons there when the weather was fine. Bill went straight round to the back of the house, thinking that she might be in the kitchen. The door was locked and the curtains were drawn. He returned to the front of the house and knocked hard on the door. There was no answer. Bill thought that this was very strange because he knew that Mrs Dunley hardly left the house.
Just then, he noticed that her bottle of milk, which was delivered early in the morning, was still on the doorstep. This worried him. If Mrs Dunley had not taken in her milk, perhaps she was ill. Bill walked round the house until he found an open window. He squeezed(挤) through it. Then he went into the hall. There he almost fell over Mrs Dunley, who was lying at the foot of the stairs unconscious(昏迷不醒的). Realizing that there was little he could do for her, Bill rushed out of the house, stopped a passing car and told the driver to telephone for an ambulance(救护车) as soon as he got to the village.

26、Plastic can be found almost in everything. That includes toys, cars and computers. Most plastic cans should be recycled. However, many types of plastic are often thrown away. Much of the plastic rubbish ends up in the ocean. It gets there mainly from litter on land and over-flowing sewers (下水道).The rest is thrown directly into the seas. It's reported that about 8 million tons of plastic flows into the seas each year. That's equal to a garbage truck full of plastic every minute. Plastic can not fully break down, so once it reaches the ocean it will float on the sea or sink into the bottom and then it may kill the wildlife.
In response to this problem, the United Nations (U.N.) hosted its first-ever Ocean Conference. At the conference, the UN’s 193 member nations reached an agreement. They agreed to try their best to protect the ocean from pollution. "The sea has a special relationship with all of us in the world, but the relationship is under threat now," said Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN.
Countries in Asia have agreed to take some measures. The promise from China, Thailand, and Indonesia is hopeful. They produce up to 60% of all marine plastic waste-because of leakage (泄露) from underdeveloped garbage-collection facilities.
Good news is that some scientists and companies worldwide are developing ways to keep plastic out of the ocean. They are trying to remove it and recycle it. For example, the Dell, a computer company, is creating laptop packaging (包装) from recycled plastic rubbish.
Dell predicts that the project will prevent 16,000 pounds of plastic from entering the ocean.“We hope to encourage more companies to do something for the growing environmental issue," Carly Tatum says, who is a Dell spokeswoman.
However, environmentalists are not so optimistic. They warn that there is no quick way to prevent plastic pollution. Maybe the real solution is that every country in the world should make stronger laws on the plastic pollution.
【1】According to the passage, how do people usually deal with most plastic?
A.By recycling it.
B.By burying it.
C.By throwing it away.
D.By making it harmless
【2】What does "this problem"in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The ocean is seriously polluted
B.The wildlife in the ocean is dying out.
C.Plastic fails to fully break down.
D.Too much plastic rubbish flows into the ocean.
【3】What does the writer think is probably the best way to prevent plastic pollution worldwide?
A.Producing less plastic waste.
B.Taking measures to recycle plastic.
C.Encouraging all countries to make related stricter laws.
D.Developing more ways to keep plastic out of the ocean.
【4】What's the topic (话题) of the passage?
A.Plastic pollution in the ocean.
B.The influence of plastic on the environment.
C.Debates on plastic recycling.
D.Measures on protecting the ocean.
27、 Antarctica(南极洲) is known for being a vast land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. Despite (尽管) this, the continent is slowly starting to turn warm. According to the Guardian, the Antarctic has registered (登记) a new high temperature for the first time on record, prompting fears of climate instability(不稳定性) in the world’s iciest place.
On Feb 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75℃ on the icy continent of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the previous record of 19.8℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.
This record-breaking reading was taken at a monitoring (监测) station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian soil scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was documented during a 20-year-long research project. The focus of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永久冻土) within the region. Permafrost is soil that stays frozen for at least two years. Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer stressed that “We can’t use this to anticipate (预测) climatic changes in the future. It’s simply a signal that something different is happening in that area.”
But in fact, the last high temperature reading was in the 19℃ range. These higher temperatures can cause ice and glaciers (冰川) in Antarctic regions to melt. The Antarctic peninsula (半岛) —the long finger of land(狭长地带) that stretches towards Argentina(阿根廷)—is most dramatically affected. Scientists saw glaciers that have retreated by more than 100 meters in Discovery Bay where the snow melted in little more than a week, leaving dark exposed rock. This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can threaten the safety of coastal areas. It’s believed to be behind an alarming decline of more than 50 percent in chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) colonies, which are dependent on sea ice.
Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to fix.
