24、 “Your hair looks nice today.”
This is an example of a compliment. It feels nice when someone notices and praises you for something. But are there cultural differences in making compliments?
Sometimes I receive compliments for things that I don’t think it is worth. For example, when a taxi driver says “Wow, your Chinese is so good!” even though the only thing I said to him was “Hello, please take me to the airport.” It feels insincere to receive a compliment like this for saying just one simple sentence. However, I know he’s just trying to be polite.
It also seems like Chinese people are a bit more humble(谦虚的) than others when they receive a compliment. They often think little of the compliments they receive. I enjoy this quality, as people like this are more honest. I’ve noticed that older people are quite humble.
When and where should you give compliments? I try my best to compliment people in the service industry. People sometimes complain about the bad service in restaurants, stores and other places. But if I get good service, I’d love to compliment whoever served me, such as by saying “the food was delicious” or something like that. This will encourage them to continue to provide good service to others.

【5】Which statement is TRUE?
A.The writer only compliments people in the service industry.

C.Everyone who served the writer got a compliment from him.
D.The writer believes that compliments can be very encouraging.
25、Have you ever experienced the feeling of falling as you start to fall asleep? Sometimes you may come to realize this feeling. If so, don’t worry. Many people have felt the same thing.
In fact, these muscle twitches (肌肉抽搐) in the arms, legs or other parts of the body are called hypnic jerks (入睡抽动) or sleep starts. And they are very common. Up to 70 percent of people experience them sometimes, Huffington Post reported. But what causes it?
There are some theories(理论). Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself, especially if the person is anxious or unable to get comfortable. As you’re about to sleep, your muscles become relaxed. But your brain stays awake. It misunderstands the relaxing of your muscles as a sign that you’re falling.
Then the brain jerks the body awake as if it’s trying to protect you.
Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks. When we sleep, we experience two phases: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). During REM, our heart rate (心率), breathing and nervous system can act irregularly (不规律地). If the body experiences flashes (一瞬间) of REM while entering sleep, these irregularities could cause twitches.
If you don’t want to experience hypnic jerks, scientists have some suggestions. When you become deeply relaxed, you can learn how to reconnect slowly by moving your fingers and toes a little bit. Then start to move your head and open your eyes, while being aware of yourself as you get out of the relaxed state.
But experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are harmless. If it wakes you up, simply roll over and go back to sleep. But keep in mind: a caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drink, exciting evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often.

Nowadays, more and more schools in China make rules making students wear school uniforms to school. Parents and teachers think it will create a better learning environment at school, but some students don’t like their school uniforms. So, what are school uniforms like in other parts of the world?
In Japan, boys in middle school wear uniforms called “ gakuran ”, which have dark jackets with stand-up collars(立领) and pants. Girls, on the other hand, wear uniforms called “sailor fuku”, which look like European naval(海军的) uniforms.
Most schools in England require students to wear school uniforms. Boys need to wear long grey or black pants, white shirts and school ties. Girls have the same clothes as boys, but they can wear skirts or summer school dresses during the summer term.
In the UK, uniforms were the custom throughout most of the 20th century, but now more and more public schools stop requiring students to wear uniforms. They think uniforms make students lose their personalities.
For children in many African countries, school uniforms can be a kind of pride, or a huge financial burden(经济负担). Many children have only one uniform, and that may be all the clothes they have.
In a word, love it or hate it, the school uniform is a part of growing up for children around the world, so you’d better enjoy your school uniform and your school life.
