二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Years ago, I had a falling out with a friend due to a misunderstanding that was completely my fault. I was afraid to admit that I was wrong, so we didn’t speak for years. Then we bumped into each other and decided to meet for lunch. It was so pleasant that we kept meeting. After two or three meals together, I pushed myself to apologize for my fault years earlier.

My experience isn’t unique: Many people avoid apologizing because the idea of admitting to wrongdoing makes them terribly uncomfortable. “We all like to view ourselves as good people- as kind, considerate and moral,” says Ryan Fehr, a professor at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business.

“Apologies force us to admit to ourselves that we don’t always live up to our own standards. We might also fear that the victim (受害者)won’t accept our apology, further compromising (作出让步;违背)our positive sense of self. For these reasons, an apology can be very difficult to give.”

For many, apologizing is stressful, awkward and uncomfortable. Research shows that it can improve your mental health, repair damaged relationships and increase self-respect.

“Apology acts as a signal of one’s moral character,” Fehr says. “It represents a separation of the offender(冒犯者)from the offense. The offender is saying: “ I recognize that what I did was hurtful, but that offense does not represent me as a person. ”Even if you speak your words not fluently, they will mean a lot. Victims usually do appreciate an apology. ” Fehr says.

I know this first-hand: My friend and I had lunch recently, 15 years after my belated (迟来 )apology. Admitting that everything had been my fault helped. We’re both appreciative to have our friendship today.

1What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To tell us the background. B.To present the topic.

C.To describe the misunderstanding. D.To provide some guidance.

2What makes it hard to make an apology?

A.Lack of chances. B.Shortage of money.

C.Regret and shame. D.Fear and awkwardness.

3What does the underlined word “they” refer to in paragraph 5?

    A.Offenders. B.Victims.

C.Words of an apology. D.Replies to an apology.

4What does Ryan Fehr think about making an apology?

A.It will give both sides some relief.

B.It means giving up our self-respect.

C.It will make people value friendship.

D.It is no use forcing people to make an apology.

  • 27、   Filmmaker Jennifer Nelson was sued (起诉) for $1,500 for having a song “Happy Birthday to You” sung in the movie she’s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You” since 1988.

“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,” Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. “I thought it belonged to everyone.”

Nelson’s movie is a documentary—a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events—and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday” song itself.

Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in place of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters’ song.

A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday” song, but they believe it had been sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.

Nelson’s lawyers say this piece of music’s history proves that “Happy Birthday to You” belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.

Experts estimate that Warner/Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You.” Nelson’s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the “Happy Birthday” song.

1Why did Warner Music Group sue Jennifer Nelson?

A.Because she sold “Happy Birthday to You” for money.

B.Because she secretly used “Happy Birthday to You” song in her film.

C.Because she didn’t own the copyright on “Happy Birthday to You” song.

D.Because she used the “Happy Birthday to You” song without permission.

2How was the “Happy Birthday” song produced?

A.Someone replaced “happy birthday to you” in the song.

B.It was written by Mildred as a gift for her sister’s birthday in 1893.

C.It was created by someone who used the tune of “Good Morning to All”.

D.People were asked to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in the movie.

3The history experts’ statement can prove that the “Happy Birthday” song__________.

A.has always been very popular B.was definitely released by the public

C.does not belong to Warner Music Group D.has more than 32 years’ history since 1988

4If the court supports the claim from Nelson’s lawyers,__________.

A.Warner will return about $8 million B.she can obtain the copyright on the song

C.Warner will have to pay her for her damage D.she can sell the song for about$2 million a year

  • 28、   After receiving several complaints (投诉) from the customers, the owner of an Italian restaurant in Mooresville, North Carolina, has taken the decision to forbid children under the age of five. Although facing criticism in social media, he says that business has grown greatly.

The owner describes his restaurant as a traditional and wonderful restaurant, but young children cry, scream or play on iPads at full volume (音量). It disturbs other customers and clearly doesn't fit in too well in a wonderful meal. So the owner, Pasquale Caruso, set up a "no child under five" rule in January 2017.

“Some customers complain, get up and leave because children are bothering them, and the parents are doing nothing," Caruso told the newspaper. “It starts to feel like it isn't the Caruso's anymore, that it's a local pizzeria instead." Caruso added that he didn't like taking this kind of decision, but in the end, he had to do what was best for his business. Since then, people have been voicing their opinions on the restaurant' s unofficial Facebook page.

“You have forbidden small children. Then who are the next: blacks, Jews, native people? Shame on you!" one Facebook user called John commented. But for every critical comment, there are some that congratulate Caruso’s for taking such a brave decision. “Thank you for taking a stand," some people wrote on its Facebook page.

“I'm the parent of 5. Don't bring little ones to a nice restaurant or expect them to quietly sit still for an hour. They CANNOT DO IT,”" one person posted. Caruso said the online support for his controversial (有争议的) rule is reflected in the success of his business. The number of customers has risen from 50 a day to around 80.

  • 29、   While Nick was on the bus, reading his newspaper, the man sitting next to him suddenly pushed a large envelope into his hands. “Here, take this!” the man said, stood up and got off the bus before Nick could say a word.

Nick sat there, holding the envelope. It felt heavy. There were papers inside, or money perhaps. “I’d better hand it over to the police,” he thought. There was a police station close to his office. But, as he got off the bus, a man came to him. He seemed to be waiting for something. “He wants the envelope,” Nick thought. Nick began to walk quickly, and the man hurried after him. Nick started to run, and the man began to run, too. But then, just before he got to the police station, Nick managed to lose the man in the crowds. When he entered the police station, the man was no longer in sight.

Inside the police station, Nick handed over the envelope to a policeman in charge. The man opened it. The envelope was full of money, false money. “Clearly the man made a mistake,” the policeman said. “He thought you were one of the gang (团伙)!”

Nick felt like a hero. He could already see his name in all the papers. He could imagine an interview on television.

“However,” the policeman went on, “I’m afraid I must ask you to keep quiet about all this. We’re trying to catch some very clever thieves, and we don’t want them to know that we have some of the money. So you mustn’t say a word to anyone — not even your boss!”

Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.

Regions of the brain linked with the experience of physical 1 were activated in those fearful of maths when they were presented with a tough equation, researchers have found. The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 2 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.

However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 3 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 4 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.

“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “5, this relation was not seen during math performance, 6 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 7 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 8 paths. We provide the first neural 9 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.

Other forms of psychological stress, such as social 10 or a traumatic break-up, can also elicit feeling of physical pain.”

    The Best Nourishment(营养)of Life

Andrew almost thought of himself as the most unfortunate child in the world because a disease in his childhood made his leg lame(瘸的)and his teeth uneven. He was always afraid of being looked down upon. Therefore, he seldom played with his classmates. When the teacher asked him to answer questions, he always lowered his head without a word, except in biology class, which was his favorite subject.

One spring, his Dad brought home a box of flower sprouts(花苗), such as roses and carnations(康乃馨). He wanted to have them planted in front of the house. He asked each child to choose one, “I will give you a month to raise the flowers. Then I will see whose flower grows best. The winner will be bought a favorite gift.” Andrew was always longing for DK Children’s Encyclopedia(百科全书). At Dad’s words, he was especially pleased. He chose a red rose. In the following days, he, together with his brother and sister, was busy watering, feeding and tending the flower sprouts carefully. But to his sorrow, his rose sprout didn’t grow as strong as his brother’s and sister’s. Instead, it bent towards the ground and turned yellow and then brown. Obviously, it was dying. “Just my luck. As terrible as I am.”he sighed and left disappointedly, determined not to attend to it at all.

Unexpectedly, he happened to pass the flower a few days later and was surprised to find it didn’t wilt(枯萎)but grew some fresh leaves instead. Compared with the flowers of his brother and sister, his appeared greener and more lively. For the first time, he thought good luck favored him.

That night, lying on the bed, he suddenly recalled the biology teacher once said that plants generally grow at night. “Why not go to see the flower?” he thought.
