二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious(明显的) to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don't worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn't really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King's famous speech---"I have a Dream", you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don't remember. Why?  Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.

People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication(交流). They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker's ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker's attractiveness by making him more human.

As you work on your speech, don't worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

1The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ______.

A.be smarter than you B.notice your mistakes

C.do better than you D.know what you are talking about

2You don't remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ______.

A.your attention is on the content

B.you don't fully understand the speech

C.you don't know what the speaker plans to say

D.you find the way of speech-making more important

3It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A.giving a speech is like giving a performance

B.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad

C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made

D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be.

4What would be the best title for the passage?

A.How to Be a Perfect Speaker B.How to Make a Perfect Speech

C.Don't Expect a Perfect Speech D.Don't Expect Mistakes in a Speech

  • 28、   I teach online and have been doing so for years .I understand the value of traditional face-to-face course offerings for certain courses and certain subjects. I doubt an online course in chemistry can ever be as effective (有效的) as a face-to-face course held in a lab. Fortunately, I teach writing, and the Internet is an effective place for teaching subjects that call for careful reading and discussion.

It is true that there are things I cannot do in my classes on the Internet. It is also true, however, that there are things I cannot do in my classes held in traditional classrooms. So the question we should ask is: What works better or worse in face-to-face classes rather than in online courses, and vice versa(反之亦然)?

One of the things I value most in my online classes is the necessity for everyone to take part in order to show their presence. In my face-to-face classes, a student can sit quietly and appear to be engaged in(积极参与) the discussion without ever offering a thought or opinion. Online, I consider a student who sits quietly but who does not join in the discussion to be simply not present. Further, students in face-to-face classes who are too shy or who are talked over by quicker and louder voices have the chance to take part in an online discussion.

When I teach online, my students and I can be inside or outside and we can sit wherever and however we want. In Michigan, where a winter storm can make going to campus dangerous or even impossible, the ability to learn in class from the comfort of wherever you live is a big advantage. When the weather is not nice, I often teach while sitting in a local coffee shop. When the weather is nice, I often teach while sitting in my backyard.

I agree that online education is not a “recipe (秘诀)for personal success.” Then again, I’m not sure traditional face-to-face education is such a recipe, either.

1What does the author think of online courses and traditional courses?

A.Chemistry courses can be done online.

    B.Online courses are more popular.

    C.Traditional courses are more helpful.

    D.Both have their advantages.

2How can shy students benefit from online discussion?

A.They can do a better job than louder students.

B.They can sit quietly to listen to others opinions.

C.They can think independently and take an active part.

D.They can appear to be engaged in online discussion.

3Which advantage of online teaching is mentioned in Paragraph 4?

A.It is much safer. B.It is less affected by weather.

C.It is more comfortable. D.It happens anytime.

4What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Why I teach online. B.I’ m online.

C.A recipe for success. D.A new teaching style.

  • 29、   If you carry burdens all the time, soon you won’t be able to carry on. So, whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. 1

Do your hardest task first in the morning. Pushing a hard task back is like holding a glass of water in an outstretched arm. 2Do the most difficult task first in the morning, and enjoy peace of mind for the rest of the day.

3 You make plans to go outside with your friends. But at the last minute, it starts to rain. What’s your reaction? The rain won’t stop just because you lose your temper. Make the most of what you can control, and don’t worry about what you can’t.

List three things you love about your situation right now. Just three simple things about any part of your life you love, like “three simple things I love about the room I’m in right now”, or “three simple things I love about this week”, or anything else. This is a great technique if you’re ever bored while you’re stuck in traffic, or waiting in the grocery store checkout line. 4

Breathe deeply by the window. Just walk to the window, look outside for some minutes, and then take a deep breath, focusing only on that breath and nothing else in the whole world. This technique sounds rather simple. 5

A.Let go of things you can’t control.

B.Don’t worry about what others are thinking.

C.But the longer you hold it, the heavier it will become.

D.Here are some simple ways to increase your peace of mind.

E.You can change boredom into happiness and peace of mind right now.

F.But you won’t believe how much it can increase your peace of mind immediately.

G.At first nothing happens, but if you do it for hours or even days, you’ll feel the stress.

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835-April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the 1 for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and 2 articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his 3 story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into 4 Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned 5 from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he 6 in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its 7 and imprecision. Following these financial setbacks, he filed for  protection  from  his  creditors  via  bankruptcy,  and  with  the  help  of  Henry  Huttleston Rogers 8 overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so.

Twain was born 9 after a visit by Halley’s Comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it, too. He died the day after the comet returned. He 10 himself as the  “greatest American humorist of his age”, and William Faulkner called Twain “the father of  American literature”.
