二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   If you also have a friend like Francia Raisa, you are really lucky. On Thursday, singer and actress Selena Gomez, 25, used Instagram(照片墙,一款社交软件) to explain why she was “laying low” this summer. She posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed with her friend Francia Raisa holding hands. She said she recently received a kidney transplant(肾脏移植) from her best friend because of complications(并发症) from lupus(狼疮), an autoimmune disease, which means it is the result of the immune system attacking normal tissue, including the kidneys, brain, heart and lungs.

People with lupus may first experience tiredness, joint pain or a little bit of rash(皮疹) on their bodies and can go for a long time before their doctors realize it is more serious. Many people see two or four doctors before the real problem is picked up. According to Dr. Kyriakos Kirou, roughly a third to one-half of people with lupus develop kidney disease, and up to one in five of them will eventually need a transplant, sometimes because they weren’t treated with effective drugs to prevent the immune system from attacking the kidneys. Though Gomez said that she was “very well now,” she warned about the dangers of not taking medical diagnoses(医学诊断) seriously, like she did before.

Her Instagram post also called attention to two major health topics: the need for living organ donators and the fact that Gomez represents three groups more likely to be diagnosed with lupus and lupus-related kidney disease. Nine out of 10 people diagnosed with lupus are women, and most develop the disease between the ages of 15 to 44. And lupus is two to three times more common among women of color, including Hispanic (西班牙裔)women, according to the Lupus Foundation.

Raisa is Latin(拉丁人), and Gomez’s father is of Mexican origin. While it’s not essential that the organ donator and receiver be of the same race, people who share a similar racial background sometimes are better matched, according to data from the United Network for Organ Sharing.

1What can we learn about Francia Raisa?

    A. She is selfless. B. She is lucky.

    C. She is optimistic. D. She is encouraging.

2What is lupus like at its early stage?

    A. It is deadly. B. It reminds you of a kidney disease.

    C. Its symptoms are psychological. D. It is hard to recognize.

3What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. People with lupus. B. Colored women lupus patients.

    C. Lupus patients with kidney disease. D. Women between the ages of 15 to 44.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. Raisa and Gomez are from the same race.

    B. It is vital for the donator and receiver to be of the same race.

    C. Gomez has fully recovered thanks to the kidney from Raisa.

    D. The organ from the donator of the same race matches the receiver better.

  • 27、A saw-whet owl (猫头鹰) is recovering at a wildlife refuge in New York state after it was discovered glued to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The bird was found by workers helping to transport the tree 170 miles from Oneonta to New York City.

“It’s just a story out of a movie,” said Ravensbeard Wildlife Center director Ellen Kalish, who is caring for the owl.

After the owl-now named Rockefeller-was dropped off with Ms Kalish and taken to the wildlife centre, her team began giving him fluids and “all the mice he will eat”. Rockefeller had not had anything to eat or drink during his three-day road trip. “It’s amazing he didn’t get hurt,” Ms Kalish said.

Rockefeller was taken to the vet on Wednesday night for a check-up and some X-rays, but Ms Kalish said he appears to be in great condition considering his adventurous week.

Diminutive as Rockefeller is, he is a full-grown adult. Saw-whet owls are the smallest owls in the US north-east, Ms Kalish said, typically growing to no more than 8.3 in (17-21cm) tall.

“They’re a very interesting species,” Ms Kalish said. They are “very” nocturnal, meaning they’re typically not seen unless someone is looking for them. Some migrate south for the winter, and some don’t migrate at all.

Once Rockefeller has a clean bill of health, Ms Kalish and the Ravensbeard team will release him back into the wild.” Our goal is to release any bird that can be released,” she said.

There are about two million saw-whet owls across the US, so Rockefeller will be OK if he doesn’t make it all the way back to Oneonta. “They find a new mate each year and go on with their lives,”she said.

With all the bad news of 2020, this little owl’s rescue “was a story that needed to be shared”, Ms Kalish said.

    【1】Where was the owl stuck?

    A.On a tree.

    B.On a truck.

    C.In New York City.

    D.At the wildlife centre.

【2】What was the owl first offered after arriving at the wildlife centre?

    A.A medical examination.

    B.Food and drink.

    C.Christmas gifts.

    D.A three-day road trip.

【3】What does the underlined word “diminutive” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Weak.

    B.Mature.

    C.Interesting.

    D.Tiny.

【4】What will be done to the owl if it is confirmed in good condition?

    A.Be sent to a zoo.

    B.Be kept at the center.

    C.Be sent back to nature.

    D.Be sent back to Oneonta.

  • 28、   We now think that chocolate is sweet, but once it was bitter. We think of it as a candy, but once it was a medicine. Today, chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or just a snack. Sometimes it’s an ingredient(构成部分)in the main course of a meal. Mexicans make a hot chocolate sauce called Mole and pour it over chicken. The Mexicans also eat chocolate with spices like chili peppers.

Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say “Ugh!” and run away. Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste.

The word “chocolate” comes from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make a drink.

When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao, too. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes. Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was good for the digestion.

In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink. Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate. Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together. People liked the taste of milk chocolate even better.

Besides the chocolate candy bar, one of the most popular American snacks is the chocolate chip cookie. Favorite desserts are the chocolate cream pie and, of course, an ice cream sundae with hot fudge sauce.

1It was _______ that discovered sugar could remove the bitter taste of cacao.

    A. the Spaniards B. the people in England

    C. the owner of a chocolate factory D. the workers in the chocolate factory

2According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

    B. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys like them.

    C. Workers must dry and roast the beans to remove the bitter taste.

    D. Nobody had the idea of adding sugar until the sixteenth century.

3The Spaniards think that cacao was a medicine because ________.

    A. it cured man’s diseases B. it was good for digestion

    C. it was strong and bitter D. it was a kind of drink for good health

4Which is the right time order of the events regarding chocolate?

    a. The Spaniards started drinking cacao.

    b. A factory mixed milk and chocolate together.

    c. It was found that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao.

    d. Chocolate became a cheap and popular drink in England.

  • 29、Dog owners walked about 23minues longer each day than non-dog owners In a new study, dog owners took 2,760 additional seps—compared to people who didn’t have a dog at home. Bu here’s the real good news: That extra exercise was done at a moderate(适度的)pace, which means it could help adults meet their recommended weekly totals for physical activity.

The research, published in BMC Public Health, focused on adults 65 and older, who tend to be less active than younger people. The study included 43 dog owners and 43 non-dog owners, all of whom were monitored continuously for three week-long periods. When they compared the two groups, the researchers found that dog ownership was associated with a large, potentially health-improving effect.

Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners, 119 minutes versus 96 minutes on average. They also took an additional 2,760 steps, and had eight fewer continuous periods of sitting down. Most of that extra walking was done at moderate pace, defined as 100 or more steps a minute. Dog owners walked at this pace for 32 minutes a day, versus just 11 minutes a day for non-dog owners.

The World Health Organization(WHO)recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week. This increased walking time alone could just about satisfy that requirement, say the researchers—so it makes total sense that 87 percent of dog owners in the study met these guidelines, versus just 47 percent of non-dog owners.

Co-author Nancy Gee says that pet ownership may help older adults get more activity or maintain their current activity level for a longer period of time. “This could improve their chances of a better quality of life, improved or maintained cognition(认知), and perhaps, even overall longevity(寿命),”she said.

Here at Health, we’ ll add that caring for pets has been shown to have plenty of other physical and mental health benefits, as well. As animal lovers ourselves, we’ re happy to add one more to the list.

【1】What can we learn about the research?

A.It was targeted on old people.

B.It was sponsored by the WHO.

C.It had an undesirable effect on dog owners.

D.It took the mental health of dog owners into consideration.

【2】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?

A.To present the results of the research.

B.To show the guidelines of the research.

C.To describe the process of doing the research.

D.To explain the reasons for conducting the research.

【3】What does Nancy Gee think of owning a dog?

    A.It is too expensive.

    B.It is time-consuming.

C.It enables older adults to live a healthy life.

D.It helps young adults to keep a healthy routine.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Non-pet owners enjoy more pleasure

    B.Animal lovers are more generous

    C.Young people walk less today

    D.Dog owners walk way more
