26、 As missing children age, their appearances are quite different from their last known photographs, which makes finding them tough. Now AI could make it quicker to match any found children to those old photos.
Police can use software to age photos of people who have been missing for a while, but these tend to work best in adults, as age-related changes to adult faces are more predictable and so easier to simulate.
With children, these aged images don't tend to be like the older child, and matching photos of found children to old images in a database of missing children is difficult.
Now Debayan Deb, a professor at Michigan State University, and his colleagues have created an program to do this for them. They trained a face-recognition program on data sets including the Children Longitudinal Face data set, which contains images of nearly 1000 children aged between 2 and 18 years old. Each was photographed at least four times over a period of six years.
The AI learned to match recent photographs of children with images taken 2.5 years earlier 80 per cent of the time.
With one year between the two photographs, the method was 90 per cent accurate at identifying faces. This dropped to 73 per cent after three years. The approach beats comparing children with photos taken when they were aged 0 to 4 that have been aged by software, which hovers at 50 percent recognition after six months. The new AI might help to improve accuracy of this kind of software as well.
"This is a very good paper that could potentially be used to identify missing children," says Amarjot Singh at the University of Cambridge.
Deb's next goal is to extend the age gap. His team also hopes to develop an app that could be used to fight child trafficking.
【1】The software which police has used can_________.
A.match photos of found kids to former images
B.predict the changes of people over time
C.produce accurate images of children
D.age the photos of missing people
【2】Why it is difficult to match photos of found children to their old images?
A.Because the data set of child face images is quite large.
B.Because the software can’t age the photos of those kids.
C.Because aged images aren’t very alike to the older child.
D.Because it’s difficult to recognize the older kids with photos.
【3】It can be learned that Deb’s team________.
A.helps police identify missing children
B.intends to develop a new app
C.improved the software used by police
D.will give their app to police
【4】What do we know about the approach created by Deb and his colleague?
A.It is based on the Children Longitudinal Face data set.
B.It can recognize children’s images between 2 and 18.
C.It is more accurate than the software to match photos.
D.It has been used to identify missing children.
27、 Several recent studies examined how machine automation and artificial intelligence (AI) will change the future of work.
Some people predict these technologies could replace up to 30 percent of workers worldwide by 2030. The possibility of being replaced will greatly increase for workers with less education, said Price Waterhouse Coopers, an international company providing financial and tax services. It estimated(估计) that in Britain, up to 46 percent of workers without a college degree could be in danger because of automation. This would drop to about 12 percent for workers with undergraduate degrees or higher.
“New smart machines have the hidden power to replace our minds and to move around freely in the world,” the study said. It added that the greatest job replacement is expected to come in the areas of transportation, storage, manufacturing (制造业)and retail(零售).
The Rand Corporation recently published its own report on the future effects of automation and AI on jobs and the workplace. Osonde Osoba was a co-author of the report. He noticed that fears over machines taking jobs from humans goes back centuries. He agrees there will be major job disruptions(混乱) because of AI and automation, especially for lower skilled workers. But he believes the future problems have been overestimated(高估) without historical evidence to support the predictions. “It’s not so much that the jobs are getting replaced, but it’s more like tasks are getting replaced and jobs are reconfiguring(重新装备) over time to account for that automation.” He added that it will be very difficult for companies to completely automate most jobs, because they request a worker to perform many different duties and to respond to unexpected situations.
“If you are thinking about detailed things an individual(个人) might do to prepare themselves, I guess being more adaptable and being able to reeducate yourself to fit into a different job.” Osonde Osoba suggests.

28、 Recently, a 1935 letter in which Ernest Hemingway detailed his catch of a 500lb blue marlin(青枪鱼), an adventure that is believed to have partly inspired his novel The Old Man and the Sea, has been sold for﹩28,000 (£22,000).
The handwritten letter was sent by Hemingway on 8 May to the fishing editor of the Miami Herald, telling in great detail how the author and his friend Henry Strater battled to keep sharks away from the marlin after catching it off the Bahamian island of Bimini.
Nate D Sanders, the auction(拍卖)company which sold the letter, said it documented for the first time in Hemingway's own words not only the size of the marlin, but also the attack by sharks, reflecting the plot of the novel.
The company added that Hemingway's account of the marlin catch differed from other anecdotes(轶事) of it, one of which described Hemingway using a machine gun on the sharks, which is said to have attracted more sharks rather than frightened them away.
The Old Man and the Sea was also inspired by an anecdote told by Hemingway's Cuban friend Carlos Gutierrez. In 1936, Hemingway wrote in a magazine that Carlos had told him about an old fisherman who caught a great marlin alone.
Three years later, Hemingway told his editor Max Perkins that he was planning a short story about the old commercial fisherman who fought the swordfish all alone in his sailing boat. Instead, he ended up writing For Whom the Bell Tolls, not returning to the story about the old fisherman until January 1951. It won him the Pulitzer in 1953, and was specifically mentioned when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954.

29、Travel Is Good For Your Health
Americans are losing their vacation days, leading to more stress, anxiety and other negative effects because of not taking time off from work. In fact, a report by Project: Time Off, shows U.S. employees took about 16 vacation days in 2013, down from about 20 in 2000. Little sleep mixed with high stress can lead to anger and negative consequences on your cognitive performance and efficiency. Max Hirshkowitz, chairman of the board of the National Sleep Foundation says a vacation is a great opportunity to catch up on sleep. 【4】 “Keep that time,” he says. “Make it an important thing you need.”
Many studies suggest that travel can improve our emotional state. A 2014 survey conducted by Diamond Resorts International found over three-quarters of people said feeling happier when they planned a trip at least once a year. Dr. Leigh Vinocur, a certified physician and spokesperson for the American College of Emergency Physicians, isn’t surprised by the findings. “It’s hard to sit on a beautiful beach somewhere and think about paperwork or deadlines. That is why over three-quarters of people to the Diamond Resorts International survey reported feeling happier when they regularly had a vacation. Regular vacations while taking time for yourself and your family lowers your stress level. 【5】” she says. Besides, studies show that looking back on the pleasant vacation may keep happiness long after your trip.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 【1】, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 【2】 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 【3】 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 【6】 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 【7】between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 【8】 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 【9】 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 【10】 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
