二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When I was a child, not many of us grew up with pets in Asia. It was unusual to show sympathy towards animals. We learnt respect for our elders and for our government, and we learnt etiquette( 礼仪)too, but rarely was it suggested that we extend any feelings towards animals, or indeed that animals have feelings. And because of this, many children in Asia grow up considering animals exist to serve us, feed us, entertain us and clothe us.

I co-founded ACT Asia in 2006 with an Asian vet, to support the development of caring societies in Asia. While many nonprofits were already addressing human, animal and environmental concerns with direct action, 1 felt the cultural shock between continents was too great to ignore. We had to accept that change would not happen immediately, and that intervening(干预)would cause defence. First, we have to help societies understand the interdependence of people, animals and our natural habitat. Instead of stepping in to find fault, we stepped back and considered the cause. Millions of people live below the poverty line, and most left-behind children live without their parents, so it was clear that our biggest barrier was ignorance, not cruelty.

With the future in mind, education is at the core of all we do. We should teach children about respect and kindness, and we see that a sense of responsibility is improving. By doing so, they are developing a keen sense of respect, to each other, for all species and our natural environment, but also for themselves. Given the chance to understand the truth about life on earth, many people-but children in particular-will choose compassion(同情)over cruelty.

1What were the Asian children like when the author was a child?

    A.They never kept pets.

    B.They had no compassion,

C.They didn't pay attention to their behavior.

D.They took it for granted that animals serve human.

2What is the purpose of the ACT Asia?

A.To find the causes of poverty in Asia.

B.To appeal to people not to kill animals.

C.To improve Asian's sense of caring societies.

D.To help solve the culture shock between countries.

3What can we infer from the second paragraph?

A.Direct action of many nonprofits was efficient.

B.The change of caring societies would appear soon.

C.People, animals and our natural habitat exist together.

D.The biggest barrier of us was not ignorance but cruelty .

4What does the author think of present Asian children's  sense of caring society?

A.It is hopeless. B.It is satisfying.

C.It is annoying. D.It is uncertain.

  • 27、Millions of Americans sit behind a computer screen, chained to their desk all day because the vast majority of stable, high-paying professions(职业) are “office jobs”. However, having a successful career does not require you to sit behind a desk and plug away at a computer all day.

In fact, there are a large number of non-desk jobs in a variety of industries that are growing and offering workers a direct path to the middle class, according to a new analysis of labor market information from CareerBuilder. While most of the highest-paying non-desk jobs are medical professions that require a doctoral or professional degree, there are 170 non-desk professions that pay $15 per hour or more, do not require a bachelor’s degree(学士学位) for a typical entry-level position, and have seen at least 6 percent job growth over the last four years.

“The US workforce has gradually changed to office-based work because of the rise of the professional service economy and productivity gains associated with information technology,” Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources Officer at CareerBuilder, said in a statement. “But some of the healthiest areas of job growth year after year are in middle-skill professions that don’t require workers to sit in front of computer monitors and phones for 40 hours a week.”

Here are the top-paying jobs that don’t require you to work at a desk in various kinds — none of which require a four-year college degree — and their hourly salary(工资) and growth rate since 2010: professional assistants(助理) : $26.57, 14 percent; elevator repairers: $37.81, 6 percent; mechanical engineering technicians: $25.19, 10 percent; and electromechanical(电动机械的) technicians: $24.68, 8 percent.

While they tend to pay less than traditional office jobs, non-desk professions provide a variety of benefits. Haefner points to a 2014 CareerBuilder survey that discovered workers who don’t work at a desk all day are less likely to complain about their work environment and less likely to report being overweight.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “plug away” in the first paragraph probably mean?

    A.Turn off a switch.

    B.Look for a job.

    C.Keep on working

    D.Give up working

【2】What conclusion can we draw from the second paragraph?

A.A non-desk job may provide you with a middle-class life.

B.The last four years has seen an increase in desk jobs.

C.The college degree is the ticket to a position.

D.A non-desk job cannot offer you a secure life.

【3】What is the key reason for the US workforce to change to office-based work?

    A.High salary.

    B.Medicine.

    C.Information technology.

    D.Service industries.

【4】Which job has grown the fastest since 2010?

    A.Elevator repairers.

    B.Professional assistants.

    C.Electromechanical technicians.

    D.Mechanical engineering technicians.

  • 28、   Success doesn’t begin until you begin the walk down the way towards your goals.

And your walk  down the way always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps? Are they really anything more than our next step down life’s way?

Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith. We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself “I don’t want to make a fool of myself” or “I’d better be good at this”, you’ll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.

As a culture, we focus on results. We think about every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They fail and succeed. Then, they build upon their abilities learned each time. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove them to the whole world.

So, learn to take those baby steps to reach the goals before you. Know that you can depend on God to show you the way. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon of life.

1In the third paragraph, the writer expresses the view that .

A.we can’t expect to succeed without working hard at first

B.adults should learn from babies in dealing with hard tasks

C.we must make full use of our skills in order to get rewards

D.baby steps play the key role in leading us towards success

2The underlined word “sprint” in the last paragraph probably means“ ”.

    A.slow rush B.sudden stop C.hard climb D.fast run

3What’s the writer’s tone in the text?

    A.Light-hearted. B.Regretful. C.Encouraging. D.Concerned.

  • 29、   Time, wars and natural disasters have a bad effect on the artistic and cultural objects in the world. More than 1,000 years ago, a fire destroyed the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. In 1755, an earthquake destroyed Ribeira Palace in Lisbon, Portugal, along with artworks inside. In modern times, the Taliban destroyed the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.

As we all know, museums play an important part in our daily lives. They keep evidence of culture and history and exhibit great works. A major goal of most museums in the world is to make sure that important historical objects do not disappear forever. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, holds 1,250 pieces of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. These objects have inspired artists and historians for many years. So the museum is working to make a complete and permanent(永久的) record of the artworks.

The project is an effort of both the museum and the scientists from Indiana University in the United States. The team is using technology to create digital copies(数字复制品) of the Uffizi’s ancient sculptures.

The process is called photogrammetry. At one time, this process was slow and expensive. But not anymore, said Professor Robert Frischer. He said photogrammetry is now much faster and cheaper. Now they can gather 3-D data(数据) on a life-size sculpture in half an hour and they can process the data just in a couple of hours.

The images allow the viewer to examine the sculpture from all sides. And when the viewer zooms in(用变焦距镜头放大), the image becomes clearer. The Uffizi hopes to have the collection completed and available on the Internet by 2020.

1What can we learn about some artworks?

    A. They have been badly damaged.

    B. They were destroyed by accident.

    C. They were not protected by humans.

    D. Most of them are kept in Italy now.

2Why do the Uffizi Gallery and Indiana University work together?

    A. To build the largest museum.

    B. To create long-lasting artworks.

    C. To introduce some ancient sculptures.

    D. To inspire more artists and historians.

3What can we learn about photogrammetry?

    A. It is still expensive.

    B. It is a time-saving step now.

    C. It does great harm to the artworks.

    D. It was invented by Robert Frischer.

4What can we learn about the images?

    A. It's impossible to make them larger.

    B. They will take the place of  real sculptures.

    C. People can enjoy them online in the future.

    D. They can only show the front of the sculpture.
