二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   I became a magician by accident. When I was nine years old, I learned how to make a coin disappear. I read The Lord of the Rings and risked coming into the adult section of the library to search for a book of spells (魔法) — nine being that curious age at which you’re old enough to work through more than 1,200 pages of mysterious fantasy literature but young enough to still hold out hope that you might find a book of real, actual magic in the library. The book I found instead taught basic sleight-of-hand technique, and I devoted the next months to practice.

Initially, the magic wasn’t any good. At first it wasn’t even magic; it was just a trick-a bad trick. I spent hours each day in the bathroom running through the secret moves in front of the mirror. I dropped the coin over and over, a thousand times in a day, and after two weeks of this my mom got a carpet sample from the store and placed it under the mirror to eliminate the sound of the coin falling again and again.

I had heard my dad work through passages of new music on the piano, so I knew how to practice — slowly, deliberately, going for precision rather than speed. And then I tried the illusion (幻觉) in the mirror and an unbelievable scene took place. It did not look like a magic trick. It looked like a miracle. I knew that I had got what I wanted.

One day I made the performance on the playground. We had been playing football and were standing by the backstop in the field behind the school. A dozen people were watching. I showed the coin to everyone. Then it disappeared. The kids screamed. They yelled, laughed, scrambled away. Everyone went crazy. This was great.

1What did the author enter the adult section of the library to do?

A.Find a book of magic. B.Kill his time.

C.Read The Lord of the Rings. D.Learn knowledge of literature.

2What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Deliver. B.Enlarge.

    C.Remove. D.Track.

3What contributed to the author’s success?

A.His mother s help. B.The secret of quick moves.

C.His hard practice over and over. D.The inspiration from his father

4How would the author feel about the outcome of his performance on the playground?

    A.It’s disappointing. B.It’s wonderful.

    C.It’s humorous. D.It’s unexpected.

  • 27、   Alibaba starts taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allows business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage isn’t hard to identify: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its marketplaces attract 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.

If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing almost a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it?” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.

Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail (零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices. What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially — in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.

I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

1Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in _________.

A.its low price B.its big size

C.its not charging small sellers D.its business-to-business service

2What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the passage?

    A.Alibaba will continue to develop.

B.Alibaba stands out as the best online site.

C.Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites.

D.Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers.

3What can be inferred from the passage?

A.TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao.

B.The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover.

C.Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.

D.Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more than retail now.

4What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Shopping online is Taobao.

B.How the author purchases online in China.

C.Alibaba greatly influences people’s daily purchase in China.

D.The influence of shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.

  • 29、   Here are some of the must-reads of this year.

    Giraffe Problems by Jory John

Edward the giraffe feels very embarrassed about his super long neck. It's difficult to move, too bendy, and on the whole just too “necky”. With a delightful sense of humor and illustrations (插图) that run across the pages, this funny story of friendship and self-acceptance will be loved by kids.

The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson

Every child knows what it’s like to feel different. Celebrated author Jacqueline Woodson finds a way to reassure children that they are not alone in this tale about how sharing our own personal experiences helps us connect with others.

    Elmore by Holly Hobbie

Holly Hobbie is the creator of the beloved Toot & Puddle series and now brings us a character for the next generation. Who doesn’t love a cute porcupine (豪猪)? A lot of other animals, obviously. Poor Elmore can’t make friends, even though he really wants to, because everyone is afraid of his pines(). Thankfully, he won’t let that stand in his way!

    Wordy Birdy by Tammi Sauer

Wordy Birdy loves to talk, and talk, and talk, and talk, which means that sometimes she doesn’t pay attention to what her friends are saying or where she’s going. That kind of thing can get a girl in trouble. When Wordy Birdy goes into a deep, dark forest, she is too busy talking to notice the danger signs ahead, or to hear the warnings from her raccoon, squirrel and rabbit friends, who beg her to turn around.
