26、 A few months after Wu Xingu was congratulated by teachers for graduating from the university, the 23-year-old has been making his dream of relieving tens of thousands of teachers in China from drowning in marking papers(改卷) a reality.
Yitiku, an online software system based on Wu’s idea, eases the workload of teachers by doing many of the functions that they did, such as selecting the test questions, forming an exam paper, and preparing exercises for the students.
The features of Yitiku may sound quite simple, but this idea won his company millions of dollars from China’s Internet giant Tencent in January. The unexpectedly successful fund raising story became a popular conversation starter among the people in the education business.
“I can say it’s quite an achievement for me and our company. As far as I know, I’m the first CEO born after 1990s that Tencent has invested (投资) in, and we are the first online education company they have invested in.” Wu Xingyu told China Daily.
Different from other online companies that treat students as clients (客户), Yitiku has chosen teachers as their focus. “ We make the work of teachers easy. Usually it takes two to three hours for them to prepare a new exam paper. Now it’s just three clicks.” said Wu. He is quite satisfied with the major feature of the software.
Sitting in his 10-square-meter office in Zhonguancun, a hub of innovation (创新) in Beijing, Wu looks confident and chatty when talking about his business. His fast-speed answers give people an impression that he has years of experience in the online education sector. The fact is that he had been putting most of attention in directing courses at an art college until about a year ago.

27、Not long ago, Egypt marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Suez Canal. The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的)non-native species (物种). Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.
The number of non-native creatures has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015. The “New Suez Canal” has raised concerns in Europe and brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries. Bella Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She says much of the ecological(生态的)damage cannot be repaired. She said urgent action is needed to ease the effects of the invasive fish and other sea life.
Galil works at Tel Aviv University’s Steinhardt Museum of Natural History. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal has created a “moving aquarium” of species. These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings. Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400. That is twice the number 30 years ago. She said this is a “historic example of the dangers of unintended consequences.”
Israel is now dealing with huge numbers of poisonous(有毒的) jellyfish that affect coastal power centers and keep people from visiting the seashore. Other poisonous species, such as the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, are also appearing.
Galil said the problems of invasive species can be compared to those of climate change, pollution and over-fishing. She argues that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the environment. This has endangered native species.
Some experts have suggested that increasing salt levels in the canal itself could create a barrier(障碍物) that would keep invasive species out.

28、“You’re going to the United States to live? How wonderful! You’re really lucky!”
Does this sound familiar? Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home. But does it seem true all the time? Is your life in this new country always wonderful and exciting? A great many facts show that it’s not easy for newcomers to adjust to life in a new culture. They have to experience culture shock.
What causes culture shock? Maybe the weather is unpleasant. Perhaps the customs are different. Perhaps the public service systems such as the telephone, post office, or transportation are difficult to figure out and you make mistakes. The simplest things seem difficult. The language may be difficult. The food may seem strange to you. If you don’t look similar to the natives, you may feel strange. You may feel as if everyone is watching you. In fact, you are always watching yourself.
Everyone experiences culture shock in some form or another. But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people. A lot of the time, the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries.
They were active and successful in their community. They had hobbies or pastimes which they enjoyed. When they come to a new country, they do not have the same positions or hobbies as they already had in their countries. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock produces a feeling of disorientation (迷惘), which may be homesickness, imagined illness, or even paranoia (妄想). When people feel the disorientation of culture shock, they sometimes feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the unfamiliar environment. They want to create an escape within their room to give themselves a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to familiarize the person more with the culture. Familiarity and experience are the long-term ways to settle the problem of culture shock.
【1】Who is the passage mainly for?
A.The family and friends of those who came to the US.
B.Those who have got rid of culture shock.
C.People who have just moved to a foreign country.
D.People who can easily adjust their life in the US.
【2】The underlined part “you are always watching yourself” (in Paragraph 3) means ________.
A.you are always feeling homesick
B.you are always worried too much about yourself
C.you are always looking at yourself in the mirror
D.you are always nervous about meeting other people
【3】Which of the following would be a case of culture shock for newcomers?
A.They have trouble using public telephones.
B.Their positions or hobbies stay the same.
C.They are active and successful in the new community.
D.They have got used to the life in the new country.
【4】Which of the following may cause newcomers to lack a sense of security?
A.A new identity.
B.Local food.
C.A new self-image.
D.Strange environment.
【5】The best way for the newcomers to overcome culture shock is ________.
A.to stay inside to protect themselves
B.to make a study of new hobbies
C.to adapt themselves to the new environment
D.to ask people for help when having difficulties
29、 In a foreign country, a man visited a local restaurant. He didn't speak their language. He ordered something indecipherable off the menu. When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried noodles, he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and forefinger linked in a circle. Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrown it to his lap. What he did wrong, he wondered. Well, nothing is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.
Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they are often specific to a given culture. Gesture may mean something complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive (冒犯) in another.
The gesture “thumbup” is commonly misinterpreted. In English, it is popularly known as “thumbs up”, despite the fact that the action is commonly performed with only one hand. Englishspeaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”, which is the same meaning as O. K.ring gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.
Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardina or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While American, British and Australian would use the thumb up to signal hitchhiking to the drivers, this message will not encourage a Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.
There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences. Lack of cultural understanding will lead to disharmony among people from different cultures. When we know what to look for, such encounters with other cultures are actually very interesting, fascinating and fun. It is certainty a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.
【1】What did the man in the first paragraph do wrong?
A.He misunderstood the waiter. B.He didn't realize cultural differences.
C.He ordered something off the menu. D.He made the signal in a rude way.
【2】What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?
A.Full of admiration. B.Full of aggression.
C.Full of complexity. D.Full of certainty.
【3】What's the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain the meaning of different gestures.
B.To tell stories about different cultures.
C.To advise us to have an understanding of cultural differences.
D.To persuade people from different countries live in harmony.

31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 【1】. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 【2】 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.
Is there really much truth behind this science of 【3】 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 【4】 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.
Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.
Each micro-expression is unique to 【5】 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.
A liar refuses eye contact.
People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 【6】 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 【7】of sadness and few people can make this 【8】 expression, so it is actually never faked.
Guilty knowledge technique is 【9】.
Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)【10】. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
