二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   My dad was a farmer in the Midwest and he spent his winters selling insurance. Dad could really talk up anyone and his favorite thing to do was find out their income. Once we were at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Dad was sitting with me as I waited for my flight to Fort Lauderdale. A Russian guy who sat down next to my dad could not speak a word of English but this did not stop my dad. He found out his business, how many children he had and of course how much he made.

I used to be a little embarrassed by this, but I changed later. It was in the last year of dad's life. As I was home visiting with my husband and twins and I was in the car with my mom, she told me a story about how she was in the doctor's office with dad and how he was his usual self-talking away to the others in the waiting room. She said he started talking to this young man in a wheel chair who could not talk, could not move his arms or head, really couldn't do anything. But dad was asking questions and got the young man to smile in response. And he carried on like that with the disabled man till he was called back to the doctor's office. When the young man and his father got up to see the doctor, the father of the young man came over and shook my dad's hands and said, "Thank you for speaking to my son. Most people just turn away when they see him.'

My father ended up dying later that month, a sudden heart attack. Fortunately, all the 9 children of his had been home that summer to visit. I told this story at his funeral(葬礼). Truly, my dad was one who never knew a stranger.

1What was the author's dad most interested in when talking with strangers?

    A.What fields they worked in.

    B.What insurance they bought.

    C.How much they made yearly.

    D.How many children they had.

2The young man's father thanked the author's dad for .

A.calling in the doctor in time

    B.chatting with his disabled son

    C.comforting the other patients

D.teaching his disabled son to smile

3Why did the author tell the story mentioned in Paragraph 2 at her dad's funeral?

    A.To well remember her dad.

    B.To entertain the whole family.

    C.To introduce her dad's business.

D.To change strangers, opinion of her dad.

  • 27、   It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious(明显的) to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don't worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn't really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King's famous speech---"I have a Dream", you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don't remember. Why?  Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.

People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication(交流). They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker's ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker's attractiveness by making him more human.

As you work on your speech, don't worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

1The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ______.

A.be smarter than you B.notice your mistakes

C.do better than you D.know what you are talking about

2You don't remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ______.

A.your attention is on the content

B.you don't fully understand the speech

C.you don't know what the speaker plans to say

D.you find the way of speech-making more important

3It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A.giving a speech is like giving a performance

B.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad

C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made

D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be.

4What would be the best title for the passage?

A.How to Be a Perfect Speaker B.How to Make a Perfect Speech

C.Don't Expect a Perfect Speech D.Don't Expect Mistakes in a Speech

  • 28、   The more you know about how colleges in the United States choose their students, the better chance you will have to get in. If you understand how to evaluate yourself, how to research schools, and how to see differences between one college and another, your chances will be very great.

You will be choosing 10 or 12 colleges that you must get to know very well. You can read about them, research them online, and find other Chinese students at the school. You can email them about campus life. Find the email address of the admissions office on the college website and ask for the names and email addresses of other Chinese students.

Try hard to keep an open mind, as you research the hundreds of colleges in the US. The more you learn what a particular college is like, even if you have never heard of it before, the more informed choices you will be able to make.

That means collecting information from many sources(来源).It's easy to believe what others say, things like “Someone told me that Colorado College is too small,” and “Someone told me that Michigan is too big.” The truth is that every college has something for someone. There is no college that is wonderful for everyone. Not even the Ivy League schools(常春藤盟校)!Just because you have heard the name of a college does not mean it will be a good place for you. Just because you have not heard the name of a college does not mean that you will not like it.

Look at four-year accredited(鉴定合格的) residential(住宿的) colleges where at least 75 percent of the students live on campus. You must apply to some that are easier to get into than others. The typical residential college of 2,000 students feels different from a state university of 20,000 students. Most colleges of 2,000 are communities where everyone gets to know each other, and professors spend a lot of time with the students.

1What is the author's main purpose in writing this article?

    A.To recommend some US colleges.

B.To give tips on choosing US colleges.

C.To tell readers how to get into Ivy League schools.

D.To introduce some sources of information on US colleges.

2If you want to go to college in the US, you should____________.

A.learn about as many colleges as you can

B.compare US colleges with Chinese ones

C.do a careful research before making a decision

D.contact admissions officers for information about teachers

3According to the passage, you'd better apply for__________.

    A.Ivy League schools

    B.four-year accredited residential colleges

C.state universities of around 20,000 students

D.residential colleges with lots of Chinese students

  • 29、   When you feel that midafternoon slump(消沉) is coming on, should you fight it and get on with your day, or lie on the couch for a while. This may not be a problem that a huge number of people fight with regularly. But a new study suggests that if you’re watching your blood pressure, taking a midday nap may be a step in the right direction.

It’s long been known that naps, when done right, can leave you feeling fresh and energetic. Whether they can carry any immediate cardiovascular(心血管的) benefits has been less clear, even though this could affect the health of millions of people around the world.

“We all know that lifestyle changes stand for the basis of treatment for high blood pressure,” says Manolis Kallistratos, MD, an expert at Asklepieion General Hospital in Voula, Greece. “We also know that certain cultures have the habit of sleep during midday.” These two observations led Dr. Kallistratos and his colleagues to survey the effects of napping on blood pressure in a number of different ways.

On March 18, a study was showed at the American College of Cardiology 2019 meeting in New Orleans. Scientists wanted to find out whether taking a nap can influence people whose blood pressure is fairly well controlled, but who could still benefit from lower levels. The study included 212 adults with an average age of 62, whose average systolic blood pressure was 129. 9 mmHg. The researchers found that people who napped had systolic blood pressure that was 5. 3 mmHg lower, on average than in those who didn’t nap.

1What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?

    A. The coach. B. The new study. C. A midday nap. D. Midafternoon slump.

2Why does the author mention Dr. Kallistratos’ words?

    A. To introduce some Dr. Kallistratos’ findings.

    B. To provide the reason for Dr. Kallistratos’ research.

    C. To show us some advice on keeping healthy.

    D. To tell us the effects of napping on blood pressure.

3What did the study on March 18 want to find out?

    A. People who napped are unhealthy.

    B. People taking a nap have the lowest blood pressure.

    C. Taking a nap is good for health.

    D. To tell us the effects of napping on blood pressure.

4What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Taking a nap may help lower blood pressure.

    B. Taking nap can make you weak.

    C. Taking a nap can make your blood pressure higher.

    D. Taking a nap may cause a problem.
