二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A school in North Carolina has banned skinny jeans and other excessively (过度地) tight-fitting trousers unless worn with a top or dress that must cover the bottom in its entirety. The school board introduced the ban because it says some girls were bullied (欺凌) when wearing tight-fitting trousers. Some parents think the ban is ridiculous and that more time should be spent on monitoring student behavior instead of banning clothing choices.

As a former teacher and a current parent of two girls, I have my opinion on the issue. Non-educators often seem to think “monitoring student behavior” is something as easy as putting on a pair of shoes, and that if teachers “just did their jobs better,” 99-100% of student discipline issues would never happen. The truth is that teachers can’t possibly monitor and control every single moment of a student’s life during the school day.

This is where my view as a parent of girls comes in. Girls of middle-high school age are dealing with their own bodily development, what TV and movies tell them a girl should dress and look like “to be pretty”, and what other girls at their age say they should look like and wear “to be pretty.” This means there isn’t a flawless outfit (套装) that some other girl won’t find “something wrong with” and then make fun of. Assuming we’re talking about girls in public schools, what they wear should be comfortable but also follow common sense. Wearing something that’s too tight probably isn’t that comfortable, but if it is, having some way to cover up certain areas accented (突出) by the tight clothing is a good idea.

Modern fashions might disagree, but psychology tells us tight clothes only cause a distraction.

School isn’t a fashion show. It’s a place of learning with some social interaction, and for those things to happen and also succeed, everyone needs to work together.

1Why are some parents against the school ban?

A.It is not the proper time to introduce it. B.It will influence student behavior.

C.It is none of the school’s business. D.It will put girls at a disadvantage.

2Which of the following about “monitoring student behavior” would the author agree with?

A.It is unfair to students. B.It’s a difficult job for teachers.

C.It can solve most student discipline issues. D.Teachers shouldn’t devote much time to it.

3What does the underline word “flawless” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.tight B.perfect

    C.casual D.comfortable

4What should be the principle of dressing for school girls in the author’s opinion?

    A.Modesty. B.Fashion.

    C.Neatness. D.Prettiness.

5What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.How to monitor students’ behavior?

    B.How to prevent campus bullying?

C.Should parents require their children what to wear?

D.Should “skinny jeans” be banned in school?

  • 22、   Sawyer Current’s first visit to Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancun, Mexico, was meant to be a getaway. But instead of relaxing on white sand beaches, Current was disappointed at the number of unwanted animals wandering the streets. “Dogs were everywhere, coming out of the bushes and along the sides of the road,” she recalls of that trip 25 years ago. “They were dirty and covered with fleas and scars.” “It was sad,” she says. “I just couldn’t stand to watch it.”

Current decided to help fix it. She built a second home on Isla Mujeres in 2000, and beginning with a skinny, toothless cat she rescued from the streets, she went on to find homes for more than 2,000 dogs and cats. Today, thanks to Current’s efforts, the island no longer has a wild-dog problem, and “people are more aware of their pets’ needs,” says Marcelino Velazquez, 34, a property manager from Isla Mujeres. “They vaccinate them and don’t abandon them on the streets. The way of thinking has changed.”

For Current, it was a hard-fought transformation. “At first I was angry and thought it was horrible,” Current says of the conditions on the island when she began her work. “But these weren’t bad people. They were people without resources.” When she first arrived, the community had no small-animal vet, and animal control consisted of a team of government workers who’d round up street dogs in a truck and kill them. “I used to follow the truck, and when they’d go for lunch, I’d let the dogs out,” she says. “One time I let the air out of their tires.”

At one point she was caring for more than 65 rescued dogs in her home, and she estimates she has spent about $1 million of her own savings on her efforts. “It was exhausting,” she admits. Now Isla Animals has an on-site shelter with a small staff, and many volunteers and donors among the island’s tourists. Each year the group re-homes more than 170 pets, many of which fly with volunteers to families in the U.S. and Canada.

“There’s nothing in the world like finding a starving dog, nursing it back to good health and finding it a loving home,” Current says.

【1】What made Current feel disappointed with the island?

    A.Insects biting people.

    B.People without resources.

    C.Houses in poor conditions.

    D.Animals abandoned in the streets.

【2】Why did Current follow the truck and let the air out of its tires?

A.To show the local people how to solve their problems.

B.To draw public attention to what she was doing.

C.To stop the workers from killing the animals.

D.To help the government punish bad people.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Current?

    A.Loving.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Intelligent.

    D.Cautious.

  • 24、   When returning to south-western Germany, where my parents live, it is compulsory for me to go on a hike to connect with nature and reconnect with myself. So, that is exactly what I did the first sunny Sunday back in the beautiful Black Forest. The Huzenbacher See is a tarn in the middle of the northern Black Forest with abundant nature surrounding it. Approaching it after a good hour walk, I saw fascinating blue dragonflies in quantity that attracted us by the way they flew around. They didn’t stand still for a photo, as they landed on leaves for a split second. We were also surprised at the yellow water lilies that can be seen floating on its surface between June and July.

Sitting down at one of the benches surrounding the lake for a picnic was satisfying in two ways. I was aware of the world’s beauty that gave me the energy to continue up the mountain to reach the most amazing view looking over the lake. The other was to really fill myself up in order to continue the adventure adequately, full up on some snacks and refreshing water from the well.

The hike up wasn’t as hard as expected and a good path was provided with dirty rocks and slippery stones all under the shade of the tall trees. This took about an hour and a half until reaching the beautiful view of the lake and land below. Once we had taken in the astonishing views, the walk back down took another hour or so, making the hike a 3-to4-hour round trip, which was well worth it!

Simply being back in the Black Forest and having such pleasant hikes is definitely good for the soul and I highly recommend getting yourself outside, be it in the Black Forest or anywhere outdoors. Get your intake of vitamin D and, most importantly, take in the moments that nature has to offer.

1What does the underlined word “tarn” in paragraph I refer to?

    A. Tree. B. Tower.

    C. Lake D. Village.

2How did the author feel when sitting on the bench?

    A. Tired. B. Content.

    C. Surprised. D. Excited.

3What did the author call on people to do?

    A. Take vitamin D pills. B. Love and protect nature.

    C. Save the soul and be yourself. D. Go outdoors and get close to nature.

4According to the author, being back in the Black Forest and having pleasant hikes does good to one’s ________.

    A. health B. spirit

    C. character D. experience
