二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In 2019, I rescued a hot-blooded donkey. Bo came from a nearby cattle ranch and now lives peacefully on my farm, along with another donkey, three horses, and two dogs. But the key to Bo’s successful changing from nervous to happy animal wasn’t anything I did. It was my grandson, Dylan.

When he was just shy of four years old, Dylan came with his parents to spend the Fourth of July with me on their way to Canada for a vacation. Bo kept his distance from the grown-ups, but he displayed an unusual fascination with Dylan, so we decided to introduce them.

Dylan cautiously approached Bo, step by step, holding a soft rubber currycomb. Bo held his ground, but he seemed intrigued by this little visitor. Dylan rubbed Bo’s shoulders and neck softly with the comb. It was hard for an almost four-year-old to stay still for long. To witness a preschooler learn to control himself in such a short time was amazing.

As we watched, true love developed between this once distrustful donkey and a gentle boy. Over the next few days, Bo let Dylan pet his legs, hold his head in his hands. And Dylan felt free to sit at Bo’s feet while Bo carefully nibbled(小口咬)his shirt collar and hair and rubbed Dylan’s back with his rough chin. Just as Dylan had earned Bo’s trust, Bo showed restraint with Dylan. He hugged Dylan-yes, a donkey can hug-without knocking him of balance. They met again one week later as the family passed through on their return trip. Bo came to meet them enthusiastically. He became a changed and trusting donkey.

And Dylan is a miracle worker who has a soft heart.

【1】How did Bo behave when it came to the farm?

    A.It was quite patient.

    B.It was bad-tempered.

    C.I was wild-minded.

    D.It was very friendly.

【2】What’s the meaning of the underlined word in the third paragraph?

    A.Annoyed.

    B.Disturbed.

    C.Scared.

    D.Interested.

【3】What did Bo do when Dylan came to the farm for the second time?

    A.It stayed in the stable.

    B.It nibbled Dylan slightly.

    C.It welcomed Dylan warmly.

    D.It jumped off enthusiastically.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Dylan?

    A.Shy but tender.

    B.Kind and brave.

    C.Calm but careless.

    D.Clever and athletic.

  • 22、   On Wednesday afternoon, a handsome, wealthy attorney renowned for handling affluent clients came into the restaurant. At least that’s how Lawrence described himself to me in his intro. He was dressed in a sharp navy suit, white shirt and silk tie. He asked, “How long have you been waiting tables?”

Jokingly, I replied, “I’m new, so forgive me if your meal lands on your lap.”

He replied, quite sternly, “Don’t make excuses for your mistakes.” I thought he was joking, but his face lacked even the hint of a smile. In the same tone, he said, “Come to dinner with me Saturday night.”

I ignored his invitation, which seemed more like a demand, and asked, “How long have you been an attorney?”

    “As long as I’ve wanted.”

Confused and curious, I prodded: “What kind of answer is that?”

“The only one you’re going to get.” Lawrence placed his order: filet mignon, green beans instead of broccoli. Staring at me straight-faced, he added, “I’ll have bottled water. Tap is for the waitstaff.”

As soon as I brought his food to the table, he took his fork and inspected the filet. “Saturday night I’ll take you to a restaurant that makes this one look like fast food.”

“I enjoy fast food; it’s unpretentious,” I responded. “Besides, I haven’t agreed to any date.”

After he asked for the bill, I carefully removed his glass, plate and utensils, trying not to drop anything on him or the floor. As I cleared the table, he asked, “So, are we on for this weekend?”

Something about him was intriguing. So as not to appear too eager, I replied with a tentative, “I guess so.”

Phone in hand, he asked, “What’s your name and number? I’ll call for your address.”

I took out my phone and said, “First, you tell me yours.”

He paid with cash, and instead of a tip, left a note stating he would make it up to me on Saturday night.

He waited until Saturday morning before calling to ask for my address. I told him to park in the upper tier of the parking garage next to my apartment building.

“Why can’t I just pick you up at your apartment?” he asked.

“I don’t know you well enough for that. Is that a problem?”

    “No, but it’s weird.”

    “Not to me.”

“OK, I’ll meet you there. Do you have any nice clothes to wear?”

“Lawrence, you better shape up before tonight, or this date isn’t going to take off. I look good in anything.”

    “OK, OK, calm down.”

I arrived early, and the adrenaline was rushing through my veins as I waited for Lawrence in the parking garage. The minutes passed slowly until I heard the sound of a car engine approaching from below.

Lawrence had arrived in a black stretch limousine.

Waiting for Lawrence were three FBI agents-colleagues of mine-with cameras. Lawrence wasn’t an attorney; he was an unemployed jewelry store employee who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in merchandise. His ex-fiancée went to the police after he broke off their engagement. But her story hadn’t been enough; we needed evidence.

I ran the prints from Lawrence’s glass and utensils- they matched perfectly with the ones found in the store’s safe. In the trunk of the limo, Lawrence had suitcases packed for a getaway. Hidden inside one was a small sack of jewels: rubies, diamonds, pearls, sapphires and emeralds.

As I walked towards the limo, I heard Lawrence pleading, “Please, I needed the money to pay bills!”

I yelled back, “Don’t make excuses for your mistakes!”

1What did the author think of Lawrence’s introduction?

    A.Convincing. B.Unbelieving.

    C.Ambiguous. D.Joking.

2What does the underlined word “sternly” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Stubbornly. B.Seriously.

    C.Friendly. D.Lively.

    3The author ignored Lawrence’s invitation because _______?

A.she didn’t want to be connected with him.

B.she thought him to be distant.

C.he wasn’t the man she had affection for.

D.she wanted to trick him into giving himself away.

4Why did the author “carefully removed his glass, plate and utensils”?

A.To avoid embarrassment. B.Not to land anything on his lap.

C.To get the evidence for his crime. D.Not to break them.

5Which of the following words can be used to describe “I” in the passage?

A.Kind and friendly. B.Easygoing and clever.

C.Distant and cautious. D.Brave and wise.

6What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Familiar words. B.A thief.

C.A mistake. D.A story of a famous attorney.

  • 23、Scientists can’t predict earthquakes. But toads(蟾蜍)might be able to.

In the spring of 2010, Rachel Grant, a researcher in life sciences, was studying a population of toads in a large dry lake in central Italy. Common toads reproduce once a year, sometimes traveling great distances to gather at their breeding(繁殖)grounds, and Grant was looking at whether her subjects were using the cycles of the moon to coordinate their romantic encounters.

In the previous three years, she had watched the toads increase in number when the moon grew from new to full. But that year was different. The moon became almost full, and suddenly the toads were gone. “It went from there being 90 to 100 toads down to six, and then to one, and then zero,” says Grant.

“I was at a loss. Did somebody come and disturb them? Did somebody run through with a tractor? But that didn’t seem right. Toads get run over by cars all the time, and that doesn’t make them run away,” she says.

Five days after the toads disappeared, she had a possible answer: an earthquake struck in the middle of the night. The 6. 3-magnitude quake was the deadliest to hit Italy in nearly 30 years, killing roughly 300 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

Grant stayed to count her toads in spite of the aftershocks. When a full moon rose three days after the quake, a few toads risked a return. But then their numbers dropped again, remaining low until two days after the last aftershock-a full 10 days after the first quake. “It’s never been reported to have happened before,” says Grant. “Once they’re breeding, then they’re breeding. That’s it. “

The question now, says Grant, is whether seismologists(地震学家)can do anything with her research to try to predict the next big one. “A lot of people are asking, “Can we use them as a kind of monitoring tool, keep one at home and watch to see if they run away? “ says Grant. “That’s obviously not going to work. “ But she’s hoping something might.

【1】What was Grant’s main purpose in going to the large dry lake in Italy?

A.To use toads to predict earthquakes.

B.To study toads during an earthquake.

C.To check the number of toads there.

    D.To study toads’ breeding activities.

【2】What was unusual about the toads before the earthquake?

A.Their number increased when a new moon rose.

B.Their number increased when the moon became full.

C.They disappeared just before the moon became full.

D.They disappeared when a new moon rose.

【3】What does Grant really mean by stating “I was at a loss”?

A.She felt sorry for the toads.

B.She felt puzzled at what she saw.

C.She felt fearful about the earthquake.

D.She felt sad about what somebody had done.

【4】When did the number of toads begin to increase after the earthquake?

A.When the moon began to rise.

    B.After the aftershocks stopped.

    C.Two days after the earthquake.

D.Three days after the moon became full.

  • 24、   The great thing about libraries is that they house all types of books—from mysteries to biographies to dramas—all in one location. The bad thing about libraries is that they house all types of books in one location, and if it’s a location you can’t get to, you’re out of luck. Now, mobile library solutions are appearing quickly around the country to bring books to people who need them.

A few years ago, when the Little Free Libraries Movement launched, more people of all ages could have access to books. Now, more than 15,000 free book stands can be found around the world, bringing books to unexpected places. But many folks simply can’t get to the places where the books are. Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be expensive to fund and to operate.

Books on bikes programs are popping up(出现)in areas where there is a strong bike culture, such as Seattle, or a strong need to bring books to the masses, such as in San Francisco.

The Seattle Public Library’s Books on Bikes program is made up of three bike/trailer combos(复合)that librarians bring to community events. The trailers are even Wi-Fi enabled so that visitors can sign up for a library card and browse(浏览)the library’s card catalog on the spot.

“Seattle has a really strong bike culture so we want to tap into that and provide full service library programs but do it in a way that is quick and smart.” librarian Jared Mills said in an interview.

San Francisco’s program, called Bibliobicicleta, was launched in 2013 by librarian Alicia Tapia. Her trailer can hold about 100 books and attracts readers of all ages and income levels.  It’s an independent, donation—based library—ike a Little Free Library, but on wheels.

When asked why she would launch a free library on a bike, Tapia answers, “Why not? Bikes are cool, and can go anywhere.”

1According to the writer, the traditional libraries   .

    A.are popular among the readers

B.are large enough to hold any book

C.are not very convenient to the readers

D.can bring books to people who need them

2Which of the following may be the disadvantage of the bookmobile buses?

A.They are full of many travelers.

B.They cost a large amount of money.

C.They hold the limited number of books.

D.They bring books to unexpected places.

3The writer mentions Seattle to tell us that   .

    A.bikes are popular in it

B.visitors can use free Wi-Fi in it

C.it is the same as the city of San Francisco

D.the library card is useful to the visitors

4Tapia’s answer suggests that she   .

    A.enjoys showing off by bike

    B.shows impatience to the readers

C.is eager to make the readers happy

D.thinks libraries on bikes are practical
