二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、With a full career in both politics and business, Hiram Fong never set out to develop one of Oahu’s most impressive horticulture (园艺) attractions. Fong, whose political career lasted over thirty years, was one of the first two senators (参议员) from Hawaii when it became a state in 1959 and the first Asian American to serve in the US Senate. Before working in politics, Fong paid his own way through Harvard Law School and, upon graduating helped found and run a law firm. Fong eventually led several companies, all the while, gardening was his escape.

In 1950, Fong purchased more than 700 acres of land on Oahu, above Kaneohe Bay. Wanting to experiment with growing fruit, he planted banana, then papaya, lemon, jackfruit, and avocado. By also choosing to plant crops such as bamboo, coconut, betel nut, and turmeric, he broadened the types of plants in his garden and developed a landscape reminding people of Hawaii hundreds of years ago.

After he retired from politics in 1977, Fong continued to be in charge of his companies, but he focused on gardening, personally importing and planting countless species of plants. Eventually, he divided his land into five gardens, each one named after a US president who had served while Fong was a senator. The Eisenhower Plateau is dedicated to native Chinese plants, such as the Hong Kong orchid tree and the Java plum. The Johnson Plateau features foreign fruits. Kennedy Valley supports ginger and palms from all over the world. Nixon Valley abounds with flowers while the Ford Plateau highlights hillsides of pili grasses.

The preserve is now named Senator Fong’s Plantation and Gardens, complete with a visitors’ center and guided tours. Until his death in 2004 at ninety-seven. Fong spent every weekend tending to his flowers and trees and associating with visitors. He considered gardening a contributing reason for his long and healthy life.

B.He credited gardening for his long and healthy life.

  • 22、Picture this: you’ve just settled into your workday and pulled up that big report you need to finish, when a friend sends you a couple of celebrity videos on WeChat. 【1】 And then the next thing you know, an hour has gone by while that big report sits, ignored, on your desk. So how does that happen?

To understand this, we conducted a series of studies with 6,445 people. Through this research, we identified three factors: the amount of media the person has already viewed, the similarity of the media they’ve viewed, and the manner in which they viewed the media.

We found the order and types of content we consume can affect our decision to keep consuming similar content. But what drives this effect? 【2】 When something feels more accessible, it becomes easier to process, leading us to enjoy it more.

These results also explain why it’s so easy to get distracted by apps on social media at work. 【3】 They offer bite-sized content that makes it easy to quickly consume several videos in a row. They often automatically suggest similar content, and many of them even automatically start playing similar videos, reducing the potential for interruptions.

【4】 To fight the pull, make an effort to just watch one video. If you really want to watch multiple in a row, choose videos that seem unrelated. You can also use a social media timer that urges you to take a break after a certain amount of time, or even just consciously remind yourself to consume different kinds of content.

So, if you’re struggling to climb out of a rabbit hole, try to find ways to reduce the similarity, repetitiveness, and relatedness of the content you’re consuming. 【5】 Once you manage to break free, you’ll be back at that big report in no time.

A.It can be difficult, but it’s not impossible.

B.You figure you’ll just take a few minutes to watch them.

C.Accessibility refers to how familiar a given kind of content feels.

D.These platforms are designed to trap viewers in a social media rabbit hole.

E.Prior research suggests that the three factors all increase the accessibility of similar media.

F.The good news is, a better understanding of the problem can give us the tools to escape it.

G.This will become a problem if it keeps you from doing the things you actually want to be doing.

  • 23、Jae-Yeol Tae recalls the time he broke into a cold sweat after noticing a long line behind him as he struggled to order a hamburger on a local fast-food restaurant’s self-order kiosk (自助服务终端). “I kept reading the instructions on the kiosk, but they were difficult to follow,” Tae, 78, said.

The South Korean senior is not the only one who has felt powerless and at the mercy of such self-serve digital kiosk machines. Adults aged 65 and older have taken part in the senior digital education program at Seoul-based Seocho Joongang Senior Welfare Center to learn how to use the devices in this modem digital age.

Seocho District’s senior community center has been providing digital education classes and resources for willing seniors over the past two years. Since September 2019, more than 1500 senior citizens have learned how to use digital machines and devices like self-serve kiosks through the program.

After two years of suffering from the pandemic (流行病), a large number of restaurants and stores have adopted self-service electronic kiosks as alternatives to keep personnel costs down while continuing to keep their businesses running. The size of the domestic kiosk market is expected to grow 5.7% annually by 2023, according to the report from Shinhan Investment Corporation.

Digital education for senior citizens has become a necessity as South Korea continues to speed up its digitization according to the nation’s pandemic regulations. At the start of 2022, Seoul introduced the “cash-free bus” plan asking 418 buses to only accept transportation cards or mobile tickets. The project offers passengers instant mobile tickets by scanning QR codes (二维码) at bus stations, but it makes public transportation more complicated for less tech-savvy senior citizens who typically carry around cash only.

Seocho District’s senior community center is not the only one promoting digital education for older adults. The Seoul Metropolitan Government also recently announced that it will invest over $1.68 million to further expand education resources necessary for senior support.

【1】What does the author intend to do in the first paragraph?

    A.Offer background information.

    B.Introduce a topic for discussion.

    C.Present a common natural phenomenon.

D.Make a prediction about future trends.

【2】Why are kiosks adopted as alternatives in some businesses recently?

    A.To cut down costs.

    B.To attract customers.

    C.To avoid physical touch.

    D.To speed up digitalization.

【3】What can we infer about “tech-savvy citizens”?

A.They often carry around cash only.

B.They adapt to the digital world easily.

    C.They think digital education unnecessary.

D.They will find public transport inaccessible.

【4】What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Senior Citizens Go Digital in Korea

    B.Korea Moves Toward Touch-free Culture

C.Senior Citizens Face Greater Challenges Now

D.Pandemic Speeds up Digital Education in Korea

  • 24、When Oumou Dieye first started competing against men in the sport of golf, she was not confident and felt a little afraid. The men did not want to golf with her nor did they take her seriously. But then, she won her first game. After that, she had all the confidence she needed to keep playing and defeating male golfers.

Dieye is the only professional female golfer in Senegal. She was introduced to golf by her brother-in-law and immediately fell in love. Not long after she began competing, Dieye was given a chance to train in Morocco. With the financial support from her French golf partners, she spent three months training with the Moroccan Golf Federation. She said she enjoyed the experience so much that she returned to Morocco and stayed for seven years. While there, she also taught children at a golfing school.

Today her home is filled with many golfing awards. She has won so many that she has lost track of the number. What she has done is notable because Senegal is a conservative, Muslim nation. There is much pressure from society for women not to be involved in professional sports. The country practices a more liberal form of Islam (伊斯兰教). However, the culture still has traditional ideas of what women should do. A woman who chooses sports over duties at home risks being rejected by her family. At first, her family was not supportive. But after seeing her love of the sport, they changed their minds.

In 2018, when Dieye returned from Morocco, she was not happy about the state of golf in her home country. She wanted to create a golf school similar to the one in Morocco. In 2020, the Senegalese Golf Federation agreed to help Dieye establish a golf school in preparation for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar. It will be Dieye’s job to train Senegal’s first national golf team. This will involve preparing female golfers-including her own daughter.

【1】What was the situation when Dieye first played golf with male players?

A.She was a shy girl short of social skills.

B.Her family didn’t support her golf career.

C.They didn’t think she was a worthy competitor.

D.She was the only female golfer of the country.

【2】What can we learn about the country of Senegal?

A.It has received financial support from France.

B.Women there are encouraged to stay at home.

C.Sports play an important part in people’s life.

D.Golf players are very popular in the country.

【3】Which of the following best describes Dieye?

    A.A pioneer.

    B.An explorer.

    C.A producer.

    D.An investigator.
