21、Su Hua is studying at Cambridge, UK. She has bought a bicycle and is worried about security (安全). Her friend, Kate, found this article and sent it to her.
Introduction A lot of crime is against bicycles. About 150,000 bicycles are stolen every year and most are never found. You can prevent this happening by following a few careful steps. Basic Security Do not leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock your bicycle when you leave. Secure it to lampposts or trees. Take off smaller parts and take them with you, for example lights and saddles (车座). Locks Get a good lock. There are many different types in the shops. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a recommendation from a bike shop. Marking Security marking your bike can act a deterrent to a thief. It can also help the police find your bicycle. It should be clearly written and include your postcode and your house or flat number. This will provide a simple way to identify your bicycle. Registration There are a number of companies who will security mark your bicycle for you. They will then put your registration number and personal details on their computer database. Then if your bicycle is found it will be easy to contact you. Finally Keep a record of the bicycle yourself: its make, model and registration number. You can even take a photograph of it. This will prove the bicycle belongs to you. |

22、As we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we’ve yet to get around to. Yet re-readers are everywhere around us. For certain fans, re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen’s Emma can still surprise him, despite his having read it over 50 times.
New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading. Journalist Rebecca Mead, a long-time Englishwoman in New York, first came across George Eliot’s Middlemarch at 17. Since then, she has read it again every five years. With each re-reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has resonated (引起共鸣) differently. Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.
Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading. Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with the “what” and the “why”. Second time round, we’re able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher Cristel Russell of the American University explained, returning to a book “brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers.”
It’s true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we’re fond of making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a time and place, and remind us of the kind of person that we were then. We’re changed not only by lived experience but also by read experience—by the books that we’ve discovered since last reading the one in our hand.
More so than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life. A book is a joint project between writers and readers, and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.
Perhaps what’s really strange is that we don’t re-read more often. After all, we watch our favourite films again and we wouldn’t think of listening to an album only once. We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is a largely one-time delight. A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.

23、 Over a cup of iced tea at the midtown Radiance Tea House&Books, whose noise is not much louder than a coffee machine's,Gregory Scott Farber,a non-practicing lawyer who works as a research analyst, described SoundPrint he created as"Yelp for noise". SoundPrint allows users to search for and grade restaurants and bars according to their sound level. "laces are getting louder,"Farber said. "People tell me thirty or forty years ago you could go somewhere to eat and expect to have a conversation. "
Farber suffers from permanent hearing loss, caused by meningitis(脑脊膜炎)which he contracted when he was a baby. Like so many great inventions,Farber's invention arose from a desire to find love-or,at least,a place to have a date. "When I was dating,I put a lot of efforts into trying to pick quiet spots,"he said. "I'd google' quiet restaurants'. Then I would show up,but it would be noisy. " His hearing aid helped, but not enough. "Out of curiosity,I started taking decibel(分贝)measurements. "He sent a list of his favorite quiet places to friends in the hearing-loss community, and soon found many requests from his normal-hearing friends.
SoundPrint includes a sound-level meter,so diners and drinkers can take measurements using their smartphones, and upload data to the database. Farber said that the app brings no profit. SoundPrint covers about two thousand cities, though only fifteen have a significant number of users. Farber recently analyzed the data from 2,376 Manhattan restaurants and bars, and the findings are not good for ears. More than 70%of the former and 90%of the latter were rated as"loud"-defined as between 76 and 80 decibels,or as noisy as an air-conditioner.

24、Would you pay nearly $2,000 (about 13,340 yuan) for shoes that look as if they came from a landfill? Well, Balenciaga believes consumers will pay that. The company recently began selling a new line of “destroyed” sneakers.
According to the brand, the shoes were designed in an effort to promote sustainable fashion. It stated that the destroyed appearance means the shoes can “be worn for a lifetime”.
However, many claim that the brand has gone too far. One main criticism is that these shoes mimic clothes worn by people who are suffering from poverty and homelessness. It is seen as insensitive (冷漠的) to put such an expensive price tag on an item that many homeless and poor people might be seen wearing.
“Poverty isn’t an aesthetic (美感), nor is it something to take style inspiration from. Glamorizing destroyed shoes to fit a fashionable agenda indicates privilege and ignorance,” noted Input Magazine.
This is not the first time brands have evoked anger with their designs.
Back in spring 2021, US art collective MSCHF and music artist Lil Nas X designed what was known as the “Satan Shoes” using Nike Air Max 97s. The designers changed the shoes to include an inverted cross and a pentagram (五角星形), which are signs of Satanism (恶魔崇拜). They even placed real human blood from members of the art collective into sections of the shoe. They said it was a sacrifice for art. But it outraged many religious and conservative groups.
In the same year, Chinese brand JNBY also landed in hot water. Some of its children’s clothes had patterns with a demon-like creature and texts such as “Welcome to hell”. Though the company said the designs were due to “freedom of imagination”, many customers thought these designs were harmful for children, as they included “violent and problematic content”.
To make products stand out, fashion designers should be creative. But they must be sure not to take their creativity too far. After all, artistic expression doesn’t always win and brands must ultimately answer to their consumers.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Millionaire Peter lost his sight. The doctor told him that only by doing a cornea (眼角膜) transport surgery could he restore his sight. Peter offered a large sum of money for the cornea, but as time passed day after day, he didn’t get any response.
Formerly, Peter had already had a bad reputation. He was usually proud of his “wealth”, and had behaved dishonestly, so as soon as the donors heard his name, all of them refused without hesitation. Even the toughest people also could not stand a long time of being rejected over and over again. At first Peter always spoke louder than others and got angry easily by his wealth, but later, he had no choice but to wait quietly.
One day, Peter wanted to bathe in the sun, so he sat on the little square before the hospital alone silently. He raised his head to enjoy the long-awaited sunshine. However, he saw nothing but the boundless darkness. Just as Peter felt hopeless, someone hit him hard all of a sudden, which annoyed Peter, so he shouted, “Don’t you have eyes? Don’t you see who you hit! I’m Millionaire Peter!”
The answer was from a little boy, “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t notice, please forgive me!” Peter changed his mind and ordered, “I can’t forgive you, but you must chat with me!” The boy said yes repeatedly and Peter nodded satisfactorily and asked, “Is the sun big today?”
The boy answered merrily, “Sir, the sun is pretty fine today, big and bight!” Peter’s face also lit up with a smile as if he had seen the golden sun and then he asked, “Is the surrounding environment beautiful?”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
