二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A textbook exchange is a business that buys and sells college textbooks. Textbooks can represent a significant part of a student’s education budget. By purchasing used textbooks or selling unneeded books to a textbook exchange, students can reduce their expenses significantly. 1Today, online textbook exchanges offer the service to nearly all locations.

Unlike the textbooks used in public education courses, college textbooks are required by only a small percentage of the university student population. These textbooks are often written by famous experts in a given field and sometimes by college professors themselves.2

Traditionally, university bookstores were the only sources for required textbooks. The success of bookstores that buy and sell used books inspired some businesses to copy the process for textbooks. A textbook exchange will purchase textbooks from students who have completed courses and no longer need the materials. 3 This can benefit students who are struggling to meet their tuition and living expenses.

Textbook exchanges on the Internet can accept used books from students anywhere in the world and deliver them almost anywhere through standard package delivery services. 4 They can compare prices on a national or even international level and choose the most reasonably-priced editions.

5 In addition to easing the financial burden on their fellow students, the business also gives the students experience in business skills, such as doing online marketing, analyzing pricing structures, and maintaining profit margins (利润).

A.As a result, they are usually very expensive.

B.Used textbooks can be bought in many ways.

C.It is aimed to fight the rising cost of college textbooks.

D.Such exchanges were once only found near large universities.

E.In fact, business students can even create their own online textbook exchanges.

F.Therefore, students are not limited to the books at their local university bookstores.

G.Then the business can re-sell the used books at a price much lower than their original costs.

  • 22、Lonely? You’re hardly alone. Loneliness was becoming a growing problem for teens, especially girls throughout industrial nations across the globe. That’s the finding of a new study.

The new study linked rising loneliness to a greater use of smartphones and the Internet over the same years. Jean Twenge and her team shared their new findings in the July 20 Journal of Adolescence. Twenge, a psychologist working at San Diego State University in California, and her team have found since 2012, U. S. teens have been spending less time together face-to-face. “Smartphones can help keep us connected with friends,” says Twenge. “But they can also make people feel excluded.” Girls, especially, may feel this way. Studies have shown that girls may feel like an outcast if the photos and selfies they post don’t get a lot of “likes”.

And then there’s “phubbing”, a mixture of “phone” and “snubbing”. It’s a moment in which a friend or family member takes out a phone and stares at it, ignoring everybody else, including you. Phubbing is one way tech can affect you, even when you’re not the one using it.

The fact that so many more were reporting loneliness is a worrisome trend. Could technology really be behind that? “In general, I tend to think of technology as one piece of a broader puzzle contributing to loneliness,” says Amanda Lenhart, a researcher who studies how technology affects people’s lives at the Data & Society Research Institute.

If technology leads to loneliness, should we stop using it? “No, not at all,” argues Twenge. “Everybody of all ages is trying to figure out how we can best use these technologies and stay mentally healthy.” Her favorite bit of advice is to “use your smartphone for what it’s good for. Then put it away”. That includes putting it away overnight—ideally in another room.

  • 23、   My colleagues and I investigated the presence of the “musical reminiscence bump(音乐记忆突点)” in a group of 470 adults who were between 18 and 82 years old. Our aim was to investigate how a person’s age when a song was popular affected three related but distinct concepts: the degree to which the song was associated with autobiographical memories, how familiar the song was and how much they liked the song.

Participants in our study were shown the titles and artists of 111 pop songs across a 65-year period (1950-2015) and provided ratings of the three concepts of interest.

We discovered that music during one’s adolescence was not only rated as more familiar, but was also associated with more autobiographical memories. This music-related reminiscence bump reached the highest around age 14. In addition, older adults (around age 40+) also liked songs from their adolescence more than other songs. However, younger adults (aged 18 — 40) did not show this same trend, and in some cases gave even lower liking ratings to music from their adolescence than music released before they were born.

This suggests that songs from our adolescence can become closely related with memories from our past even if we don’t personally value the music. This may be because it has accompanied various memorable settings from this period.

Some songs were preferred regardless of a participant’s age, however. For instance, we saw a general increase in how much people liked songs from the late 1970s to early 1980s, even in participants who weren’t yet born during that time period. This suggests pop music from certain time periods is intergenerationally valued. Examples of songs we used from this time period include Hotel California by the Eagles and Billie Jean by Michael Jackson.

【1】Participants in the investigation are ________.

A.expected to comment on the songs

B.to test the three concepts of songs

C.ranging in ages from a kid to a senior

D.provided the titles and singers of the songs

【2】What do we know about the age 14 in paragraph 3?

A.People listen to songs less after this age.

B.People’s preferences of songs divide at this age.

C.People get most memories from songs of this age.

D.People at this age begin to have autobiographical memories.

【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Some songs keep alive beyond time.

B.Years around 1980 are a golden age for music.

C.The memorable situation of a song decides its popularity.

D.Hotel California and Billie Jean are adored across nations.

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Music changes our life

B.Everyone is a follower of songs

C.We’re crazy about music from our youth

D.Songs possess the unique features of a time

  • 24、Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR) is one of several companies that hope to begin mining the seabed on an industrial scale in the coming years, perhaps as early as 2024. Some think of the seabed as a sustainable source of the metals needed to produce batteries for electric vehicles or smartphones. Meanwhile, scientists are trying to figure out just how much ecological damage deep-sea mining would do.

The short answer is a lot, according to some European scientists who’ve been monitoring GSR’s efforts and reported initial results recently at a virtual meeting. But it is too soon to tell how much of the damage would be permanent or whether it should be considered excessive (过度的).

Each mining operation like GSR’s in the eastern Pacific would remove the “biologically active” surface layer from about 200 to 300 square kilometers (77 to 166 square miles) of seafloor each year, said Matthias Haeckel, a marine biochemist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany.“If mining takes place, it should be done without loss of biodiversity and ecosystem functions,“ said Ann Vanreusel, a marine biologist at Ghent University in Belgium.

That’s a hard standard to define, however, let alone enforce (实施),because so little is known about deep-sea ecology. On two expeditions to the Pacific region targeted by GSR and other companies, the researchers identified thousands of species-70 to 90 percent of which were new to science.

“That in itself is a great example to show that, ’Hey, we do not have a good understanding of how this ecosystem operates’, ”says Diva Amon, a marine biologist and National Geographic explorer. In a review published this month in Marine Policy, Amon and her colleagues argued that at least a decade should be spent filling the gaps in scientific understanding before commercial deep-sea mining could begin.

【1】Why does the seabed attract Global Sea Mineral Resources?

    A.It has biodiversity.

B.It is abundant in metals for industry.

    C.It is biologically active.

D.It contains sustainable batteries for vehicles.

【2】Which of the following is the possible reason why scientists are concerned about deep-sea mining?

A.They find its damage is ever-lasting.

B.They don’t know whether it will do ecological damage.

C.They have difficulty in accurately judging the degree of its damage to ecology.

D.They think it’s hard for mining companies to make and carry out a related standard.

    【3】What’s the writer’s attitude toward deep-sea mining?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Objective.

    D.Pessimistic.
