  • 21、Coffee chains create a lot of waste, from disposable takeaway cups to the used coffee grounds(咖啡渣) that are sent to landfills. Starbucks has started to try recyclable alternatives to the disposable cups. But the used coffee is often unnoticed.

The world drinks around 2 billion cups of coffee a day, producing 6 million tons of used grounds every year. When they go to landfills, the grounds release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

U.K. Bio-bean has found a way to turn that waste into valuable resources. At Bio-bean, used coffee grounds are processed to remove paper cups or plastic bags, and then passed through a dryer and a further screening process. They are finally processed into the fuel, Coffee Log.

"Coffee is highly calorific and lends itself to being a really fantastic fuel," says George May, director of Bio-bean. "Coffee Log burns about 20% hotter and 20% longer than wood logs do."

While the fuel releases greenhouse gases when burned, if it replaces other carbon-based fuels, Bio-bean estimates that the recycling process reduces emissions by 80% compared with sending the grounds to landfills.

Founded in 2013, Bio-bean grew rapidly, launching coffee collection services across the U.K. and building the world's first coffee recycling factory only two years later. In 2016, they launched their first product, Coffee Log, and in 2019 their first natural flavor ingredient into the food and drink industry.

"We've really managed to succeed with our innovation(创新) because we've managed to get to scale--the service of our company is in larger demand. What started as a good idea is today the U.K.'s largest recycling plant of coffee grounds. We are turning 7 ,000 tons of those grounds per year into the fuel," says May. "Despite being delayed by the COVID-19, we plan to expand our operation into northwestern Europe within the next five years."

  • 22、Although we benefit from deep and meaningful conversations that help us build connections with one another, we often stick to small talk with strangers because we underestimate (低估) how much others are interested in our lives and wrongly believe that deep conversations will be more awkward and less enjoyable than they actually are, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.

Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and his colleagues designed a series of experiments with more than 1, 800 participants. The researchers asked pairs of people — mainly strangers — to discuss either relatively deep or shallow topics. In the first experiment, people received shallow or deep questions to discuss. Before the conversations, participants predicted how awkward they thought the conversations would be, how connected they thought they would feel to their conversation partner and how much they would enjoy the conversations. Afterward, they rated how awkward the conversations actually were, how connected they actually felt and how much enjoyment they actually experienced.

The researchers found that both deep and shallow conversations felt less awkward than the participants had expected. That effect tended to be stronger for deep conversations.

Deep conversations were also more enjoyable and led to a stronger sense of connection. In the second experiment, participants who had a deep conversation with one partner and a shallow conversation with another partner initially expected to prefer the shallow conversation but actually preferred the deep conversation after having both of them.

“Our participants’ expectations about deep conversations were greatly mistaken in a way that could keep people from interacting deeply with others in their daily lives,” Epley said. “As the pandemic (疫情) wanes and social distance restrictions become less strict, and we all get back to talking with each other again, being aware that others also like deep conversations might lead you to have more pleasant interactions.”

【1】What were the participants asked to do in the first experiment?

    A.Choose some topics they prefer.

    B.Avoid discussing shallow topics.

    C.Make predictions on their feelings.

    D.Classify various types of questions.

【2】It’s found that the participants in the first experiment _________.

A.preferred to discuss shallow questions with strangers

B.felt very awkward when conducting deep conversations

C.underestimated how awkward their strange partners felt

D.overestimated the awkwardness of talking with strangers

【3】What does the second experiment find about having deep conversations with strangers?

A.It is easier to conduct than making small talk.

B.It usually causes a weaker sense of connection.

C.It is more enjoyable than having shallow ones.

D.It is more awkward than previously expected.

【4】What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Worsens.

    B.Appears.

    C.Spreads.

    D.Fades.

  • 23、   Beekeeper Pablo Alvarez sits near his hives (蜂箱) and points up into a cloudless, blue Chilean sky. This season, Alvarez says, there is much less bee traffic than usual. Spring rains once led to fields of flowers in Casablanca, a town on the Chilean Pacific coast. Now, there is just dry earth. He says he lost half of his hives by early spring. “At the end of winter, bees need flowers to grow and make honey,” he told Reuters reporters. No flowers means no food, he added.

His story is common among beekeepers across much of central Chile. A severe, years-long lack of rain is making life difficult for honey bees. Concern over how the changing environment has affected bees has reached the highest levels of government in Chile. The country has already provided large amounts of money for farmers suffering from the drought. In August, it said it would include the “costs” of climate change in future agency budgets.

"We all know the importance that bees have in agricultural production," Agriculture Minister Antonio Walker recently told reporters. Honey bees pollinate (授粉) many of Chile’s major export crops, including blueberries, apples and cherries.

Already, agriculture officials have ordered a state of emergency in more than 100 farm communities throughout central Chile. Though dry periods are normal from time to time, officials say climate change has made the current dry period longer and more severe. Rainfall in September in Santiago was down nearly 80 percent compared to the historical average.

Alvarez has begun taking care of an organic bee yard filled with native, drought-resistant plants. Yet even as he describes those efforts, the horn of a water truck sounds. His well has run dry. Now he must pay for water, too.

1It can be inferred from the passage that   .

A.100 farm communities are now in an urgent situation in Chile

B.the government has provided beekeepers with agency budgets

C.beekeepers can use the water for free if their wells have run dry

D.the decreasing number of bees will affect the agricultural production

2Which best describes the writer’s tone in the passage?

    A.Disapproving. B.Enthusiastic.

    C.Concerned. D.Doubtful.

3What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Years-long Drought Threatens Honey Bees in Chile

B.Climate Change Makes the Dry Period More Severe

C.The Decrease in Number of Beekeepers Has Drawn Attention

D.The Drought Calls for the Government to Take Immediate Action

  • 24、A diet rich in fruit and vegetables and incorporating a daily glass of wine can protect the brain against dementia, a study suggests. Sticking closely to Mediterranean eating habits, which also include plenty of nuts, seafood, whole grains and olive oil, has been linked to a 23 per cent lower risk of dementia.

Based on data gathered on 60,000 people via the UK Biobank, a medical database set up in 2006, the researchers scored participants’ diets for how closely they matched the ideal Mediterranean diet on two scales.

Using one, those whose eating habits were the best match were 23 per cent less likely to develop dementia than those whose diets least fit the pattern. A diet with a perfect score would involve more than four tablespoons of olive oil, at least two portions of vegetables and three of fruit per day as well as a glass of wine. It would also include at least three servings of legumes, 90 grams of nuts, and three servings of fish or shellfish a week. The ideal diet would also involve very little red or processed meat, avoiding too many sweetened drinks, butter, margarine or cream.

The second scale used similar criteria and a close match on that was linked to a 14 per cent lower risk of dementia. The findings, published in the journal BMC Medicine, appeared to show a “protective effect regardless of someone’s genetic risk”.

Dr Susan Mitchell, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said, “There is a wealth of evidence that eating a healthy, balanced diet can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. But the evidence for specific diets is much less clear-cut.” She pointed out that the study only drew on data from people with white, British or Irish ancestry. She said, “While there are no surefire ways to prevent dementia yet, a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, along with plenty of exercise and not smoking, all contribute to good heart health, which in turn helps to protect our brain from diseases that lead to dementia.”

【1】What did the study find out?

A.A new way to cure a disease.

B.A popular diet to keep balance.

C.A medical database to do research.

D.A possible strategy to reduce the risk of dementia.

【2】How did the researchers carry out the study?

    A.By making comparison.

    B.By presenting the process.

    C.By consulting other studies.

    D.By analyzing cause and effect.

【3】What does Susan Mitchell think of the study?

    A.It’s evident.

    B.It’s limited.

    C.It’s practical.

    D.It’s promising.

【4】Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.
