21、“I like pigs,” Winston Churchill supposedly once said. “Dogs look up at us, cats look down on us, but pigs treat us as equals.” Whether Churchill’s contemporary George Orwell also liked pigs is less clear. But he, too, surely saw something in them that was lacking in other domestic beasts, for it was they who ended up running the show in novel Animal Farm. Pigs, then, are intelligent social creatures.
And, like all animals, they sometimes fight. A study just published in Animal Cognition by Ivan Norscia, a biological anthropologist at the University of Turin, in Italy, and his colleagues, looked at how a group of 104 domestic pigs went about resolving such incidents. In total, Dr. Norscia and his team studied the details of 216 pig conflicts over the course of six months.
Some pigs tend to be attackers; others tend to be victims. Who is what depends largely on weight, for, among pigs pounds mean power. The attacker might bite, kick, bump or lift the victim (or string together a sequence of those actions). Most conflicts ended in seconds, but some lasted a minute or two.
In most animal species that would be that. However, many of the pig conflicts Dr. Norscia observed had interested parties beyond the protagonists (主角). He therefore wanted to understand the role of these bystanders in resolving fights —and what this says about pigs’ cognitive (认知) abilities.
Since there was usually not enough time for a bystander pig to intervene during the heat of a conflict (though this did occur), he and his colleagues looked at what happened in the three minutes directly following an aggressive interaction. Sometimes, they found, the protagonists made up on their own —for instance, by touching noses.
On other occasions, though, a third pig stepped in. Sometimes this bystander acted as a peacemaker, engaging with the attacker and reducing the number of subsequent attacks compared with what might otherwise have been expected. Sometimes, by contrast, the bystander engaged with the victim. This appeared to calm the victim down, for it reduced anxiety-related behavior such as shaking and scratching.

22、 Long before they found their way into living rooms around, the world, computers were the belongings of institutes and corporate headquarters. After all, the huge and heavy mainframes of the 1960s might easily fill a room of their own.
The invention of the microprocessor — Intel's 4004 was the first to be made commercially available in 1971—changed all that. Manufacturers were finally able to produce machines small enough to fit into customers' homes. Yet, the question was: Could firms persuade people to actually want one there?
The story of how computers enter our homes is not one of technology, but one of marketing and design, according to writer and journalist Alex Wiltshire, whose new book, Home Computers : 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation, tells the industry's early history through its most influential models. "The technology was already in existence," he said in a phone interview. "But what was important was the idea of putting it into a form that could be bought and easily used.”
The very first models in Wiltshire's book were aimed at hobbyists and industry insiders. These so-called "kit" computers performed only basic functions. But the arrival of user-friendly machines like the CPET 2001 and Apple II in 1977 were signs of a turning point.
"There was a massive change around the idea of 'What if these computers were packaged, presented and designed in a form that anyone could use?' —that they wouldn't require people to learn computer languages, or to devote several rooms of their houses," Wiltshire said. "What if there were these objects that people could buy off the shelf and just plug into their TVs? That was the moment that the idea of a 'home computer' was born, and it was absolutely down to design."
【1】What can we learn from Alex's book?
A.Technology for home computers was not mature.
B.Marketing and design counted most for computers.
C.The home computer industry has a long history.
D.The writer's idea was put in the design of home computers.
【2】What is the difference between kit computers and CPET 2001?
A.Kit computers could handle complex operation.
B.Kit computers were more environmently friendly.
C.CPET 2001 was easier to use for common people.
D.CPET 2001 was better than Apple Ⅱ.
【3】What is the topping idea when designing a "home computer"?
A.Designing it like a TV. B.Designing it aimed at housewives.
C.Designing it easier to use and keep. D.Designing it used learning languages.
【4】What's Alex's attitude towards the change of home computer?
A.Objective. B.Negative.
C.Indifferent. D.Suspicious.
23、 FLEA MARKETS (跳蚤市场)
For the best selection of flea market product, get there as soon as it opens on the first day of the market. If it’s open Saturday and Sunday all year round, go early on Saturday morning. For seasonal or annual flea markets, go early in the season, preferably the first weekend. You’ll have first pick of the goods the vendors (小贩) gathered during the year.
For the biggest discounts, it’s just the opposite. Shop mid to late afternoon during the final day, or days, of the flea market. The vendors are tired and ready to get home –and they might just cut you some fantastic deals if you ask. You may have to haggle a bit, but you’ll probably go home with some bargains, especially if you’re buying large, heavy pieces the tired sellers don’t want to pack and load.
YARD SALES
Yard sale shopping is a lot like flea market shopping. You’ll find the best selections when the sale first starts. Go early on the first day of the sale. If the sale starts at 7 am, be there a few minutes before – but not so early that you’re labeled an early bird. Don’t wait until Saturday to visit a yard sale that starts on Friday.
Like flea market vendors, yard sale sellers aren’t as willing to haggle early in the morning, but the prices are usually pretty low to start. Don’t wait until the afternoon bargain hours to shop at yard sales.
THRIFT STORES (旧货店)
For the best thrift store selections, ask the employees when the new product arrives. It could be a certain day of the week or a certain time each day. Find out, and then plan your visits for those days and times.
Thrift store prices are usually low, so you might want to snatch things up as soon as you find them. If the prices seem unusually high, ask about their sale structure. Thrift stores don’t always state their sales clearly and sometimes the sales are confusing. Find out when they discount the items that interest you. That’s when you’ll find the best deals.
【1】As for the biggest discounts in the Flea Markets, you’d better______.
A.get there about 6:50 am on Friday
B.go early on Saturday morning
C.ask the host when the new product arrives
D.buy items late afternoon during the last day
【2】The best Thrift Store selections should be taken_______.
A.after the sale starts B.as soon as you find them
C.when new items arrive D.before the afternoon bargain begins
【3】The text is most probably intended for ______.
A.antique collectors B.economical shoppers
C.product vendors D.wealthy people
24、In 2009, biologist Charles Anderson put forward an assumption that globe skimmer dragonflies (蜻蜓) on the Maldives had flown in from what he assumed was India. When they flew off again, it was towards East Africa. 12 years later, a group of researchers decided to investigate his claim.
Globe skimmer dragonflies are too small to be fitted with electronic devices. Instead, the researchers examined its physical aspects and calculated how long a globe skimmer dragonfly could stay in the air using the energy that can be stored in its body. In addition, the researchers used wind models to determine if there are winds that facilitate the migration in both directions.
“Our study shows that this migration from India to East Africa is actually possible. However, the globe skimmer dragonfly can’t manage it using only the fat in its body. It also requires favorable winds and these are present during certain periods of the year,” says Johanna Hedlund, a biology researcher at Lund University. According to the migration experiments using wind models, about 15 percent of the dragonflies could manage the migration from India to Africa in the spring. In the autumn, 40 percent could make the same journey in the opposite direction.
Johanna Hedlund and her colleagues consider it impressive that dragonflies can do this at all. Even more impressive is the fact that the globe skimmer dragonfly migration across the Indian Ocean is the longest in the animal kingdom in relation to an animal’s size.
Other animals also rely on favorable wind conditions when they migrate. Two examples are the amur falcon and the Jacobin cuckoo, which also fly across the Indian Ocean. The researchers warn that climate change may affect the chances of these birds and the globe skimmer dragonfly in the future. There is a risk that wind patterns will change when the water surface gets warmer.
【1】How do the researchers mainly prove their assumption?
A.By fitting electronic devices.
B.By giving examples.
C.By performing experiments.
D.By making comparisons.
【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.The dragonfly flies using the fat in its body.
B.15 percent of the dragonflies left Africa for Africa.
C.The dragonfly flies the longest in the animal world.
D.Charles Anderson spotted dragonflies flying to India.
【3】Why are two examples mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To illustrate how the animals fly.
B.To warn people of the climate change.
C.To evidence that water surface gets warmer.
D.To show the influence of wind on the migration.
【4】What’s main idea of the text?
A.Wind conditions are crucial to dragonflies.
B.Climate change may affect animals’ migration.
C.Dragonflies can migrate across the Indian Ocean.
D.Johanna and her colleagues investigate dragonflies.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Factoring in the biting wind, I knew the temperature was below zero. The bitter cold cut through my Californian sensibilities, as well as my enthusiasm as a tourist, so I moved ;to the nearest door for warmth and found myself in a station.
I settled onto one of the public benches with a steaming cup of coffee-waiting for feeling to return to my fingers and toes-and relaxed to watch the people around.
Several tables of diners spilled out into the great hall from the American Restaurant, and smells of the food caused me to consider an early dinner. I observed a man seated nearby and, from the longing in his eyes, realized that he, too, noticed the tasty food. His skinny body, chapped (皲裂的) hands and shabby clothes nearly shouted, “Homeless, homeless!”
I wondered how long it had been since he last ate.
Half expecting him to approach me for a handout (施舍物), I almost welcomed such a request. He never did. The longer I took in the scene, the crueler his situation seemed. My head and heart experienced a’ silent war, one telling me to mind my own business, and the other urging a trip to the food court on his behalf.
While my internal debate went on, a well-dressed young couple approached him. “Excuse me, sir,” the husband began. “My wife and I just finished eating, and our appetites weren’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He extended a large container.
“God bless you both,” came the grateful reply.
Pleased, yet upset by my own lack of action, I continued to watch. The man rearranged the soup crackers, inspected the sandwich and stirred the salad dressing. Then, slowly he lifted the soup lid, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. At last, he unwrapped the plastic spoon, filled it to overflowing, lifted it toward his mouth and, all of a sudden, stopped short.
I turned my head to follow his narrow-eyed gaze.
