26、“Is this the long way?” asked the young mother as she set foot on the path. And the Guide said, “Yes, and the way is hard, and you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning.”
The young mother was happy. She played with her children, fed them and bathed them, and taught them how to tie their shoes and ride a bike. The sun shone on them and the young mother cried, “Nothing will ever be lovelier than this.” Then the night came, the path was dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother covered them close with her arms. And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary too. But at all times she said to the children, “A little patience and we will be there.” The children climbed and learned weather the storm. Year after year, she showed them understanding, compassion and hope, and, most of all, unconditional love. And when they reached the top, they said, “Mother, we could not have done it without you.”
The days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years. The mother grew old, and she became little and bent. But her children were tall and strong. And when the way became rough for her, they lifted her, and gave her strength, just as she had given them hers. One day they came to a hill, and beyond the hill they could see a shining road and golden gates. And Mother said, “I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is better than the beginning, because my children can walk with dignity and pride, with their heads high, and so can their children after them.” And the children said, “You will always be in our hearts, Mother, even when you have gone through the gate.”
【1】Why does the Guide say “the end will be better than the beginning”?
A.Because the mother will take the children to the golden gates.
B.Because the children can be truly independent with the mother’s care.
C.Because the path is not always full of fear and danger.
D.Because the mother can learn to be more patient.
【2】What does the underlined word “weary” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A.tired

C.confident
D.curious
【3】What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.The children are always brave on the way.
B.The morning is the unknown future.
C.Mother plays an important role in children’s growth.
D.The children can grow up independently without mother.
【4】What can we learn from this passage?
A.We should not ask our mothers for too much.
B.We should buy a lot of gifts for our mothers.
C.Mothers can depend on their children for everything.
D.Mothers are so devoted that we should always love them.
27、Burn rate is the speed at which a startup business consumes money. My rate was $75, 000 a month. Four months after my company was set up, I had only a quarter of the starting capital left in the bank.
Looking for guidance, I went to talk to my friend, Arthur Walworth, about my new venture (创业投资).
“Times of great change always bring out the risk-takers, ” he said. “And they leave winners and losers. My grandfather invested a lot of money in a project of Thomas Edison’s that ended up in failure.”
I was lost in thought at the notion of a Thomas Edison’s project ending in failure. Damn. It could happen to anybody! I must continue.
At that time CD-ROM sales had bombed, so investors were fleeing from the field. I didn’t turn away from mine entirely, but instead linked it to the Internet.
My plan was to offer consumers descriptions of home-design products by using a special software and let them modify the designs. Then we can enable them to get online professional and constructional help to have their houses built, decorated and furnished according to their own choice.
To realize my plan, I needed investors, so I continued to meet regularly with venture capitalists (VC). One said I had a great idea. But indeed I needed to test it and get the money somewhere. To get this money from a VC is going to cost my wife and my children! He turned down my request.
Wife? Children? I barely remembered them.
I was working nonstop-struggling to turn the key in the lock, to find the right way ahead.
The pressure was terrible. It was just at this time that my parents and sisters stepped up. Two hundred thousand dollars. A lot of money to them, invested in this crazy son and brother without a moment’s hesitation. Dad and Mom had driven out from Chicago and seen the passion in my little office and the trouble at home.
With their help my company survived and has been prospering ever since.

28、 Scientists have long thought about whether each animal species has a different language, much like different human languages that we cannot understand. Language experts agree on the fact that the way animals communicate through various calls which are not like human languages.
Animal calls are not considered as a language because the calls are limited to information related to food activities, warning about the presence of enemies and so on. They haven't the characteristics that all human languages have. That is because humans create new expressions every day by connecting different words. However, animal calls have unchanged meanings.
Anyway, animals do communicate. People who study humans believe that people speak with their whole bodies. To express a message, one does not always need words. Have you ever shared a private joke with your friends across the table? All you did was to give them a self-satisfied smile. Animals can communicate in much the same way as humans do. Although animals do not have the ability to speak words, they can use other methods, such as movements, calls and their sense of smell. In short, most of their communication is not related with speech.
If animals can make noises, why can't they talk?Humans and animals both have the necessary organs that produce sounds, such as lungs, throat, voice box, lips and tongue. However, human organs are fully developed, which makes it possible for us humans to speak.
【1】What do we know about animal calls and human languages? ________
A.Animal calls can express richer meanings.
B.Animal calls are made only in dangerous situations.

29、Walker, a farmer, at 55, was the oldest of the competitors and finished third in this year’s 1,000 km race across the grassland — The Mongol Derby.
The Mongol Derby, described by the organizers, as the world’s toughest horse endurance (耐力) race, began in 2009 as an event held every year but was cancelled in 2021 and 2022. Competitors race between checkpoints 35 km apart, where they change horses. They spend nights at one of 28 stations, set up their own camp or enjoy the hospitality (好客) of friendly Mongolian families.
Walker was an hour ahead of his rivals (对手) as the race entered its eighth day but dealt with a time punishment because his horse had a high heart rate during one of the regular checks which make sure that the animals were healthy. “I was in the lead for a long time but I had a bad vet check,” Walker said. “They check the heart rate of your horse to see if it is above 56 beats per minute. I picked a horse that had a bit of a problem.”
Walker said he had gone to Mongolia to “give it a go” but realized that he stood a chance of winning after teaming up with Patrick Heffron, a competitor from Ireland. “The horses are quite wild. I got bucked (颠) off three times. I fell off in a hole,” he said. “You’re going along and you suddenly disappear. You have to hang on to your horse for dear life or it goes off.”
Heffron met Walker as they went out for the race. He said it was important to form a team, mainly because falling off alone means that there is no one to help you recover your horse. “It’s also a bloody long way to talk to yourself,” Heffron said, “Neither of us had goals to win this race in advance but we realized: ‘We’re in front.’ So we pushed.”

One fall evening, 13-year-old Briar Omar agreed to look after his four younger sisters when his parents went to the grocery store to pick up the family dinner. The parents were confident that responsible big brother Briar with their protective dog called Mandy, was capable of managing the family in their absence. During that brief time, an unexpected thing happened: The home suddenly went up in flames(火焰). It was up to Briar and Mandy to save his family.
The children smelled smoke soon after their parents left for the store. They turned around to search for where the fire came from and were shocked and frightened to find their baby sister’s playpen(玩耍护栏) on fire.
The first thought that came to Briar’s mind was to rescue his little sisters. The family had previously discussed what to do in the face of danger, so he was prepared to act.
In a few minutes, flames were climbing the ceiling(天花板). Smoke was filling up the hallways. The horrible fire quickly spread throughout the home.
Briar remained calm and focused on the urgent task of saving his four younger sisters: Peyton, 12, Jocelyn, 3, Willow, 1, and 6-month-old baby Sawyer. He quickly picked up the two babies and rushed the older sisters out of the door to safety. After making sure his sisters were far away from the danger and breathing in fresh air, he ran back to save their home despite the flames surrounding him.
