  • 26、Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.

    Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?

    Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories from those on TV.

    Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely; instead they print stories about plane accidents.

    Another factor(因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

  • 27、   Mother slipped into my bedroom on the night of my sixth birthday, hands behind her back. “I have one more present for you,” she said. “One I wanted to save until now. Close your eyes and hold out your hands.”

    Mother wasn’t exactly true to her word. She didn’t read me a chapter of Charlotte’s Web every night. Sometimes she read three or four. In less than a week, we reached the final pages, sobbing together as she read the part where Charlotte dies. We sighed sadly as the book ended with the magical sentences I’ll never forget: “It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.” That’s when I fell in love with reading.

    And more books followed. As time passed and my reading skills improved, Mother and I took turns reading chapters aloud, snuggled (依偎) together in the oversized armchair in the corner of my bedroom.

    When I read To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye and The Grapes of Wrath in high school, Mother did, too, so that we could talk about them. My letters and phone calls home from college began, “Let me tell you what I’m reading.”

    So it was no surprise when, just hours after the birth of my first child, Mother slipped into my hospital room with her hands behind her back. “I have a present for Meg.” she said. “Close your eyes and hold out your hands.”

  • 29、One thing that is missing from most children’s education these days is natural history. By that, I mean getting out into nature and digging in the dirt, catching insects and learning the names of animals and trees.

    No amount of book- or computer-based learning can ever take the place of the first-hand experience of messing around in the wilderness. As biologist Elaine Brooks says in Richard Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods, humans seldom value what they cannot name. Children must become familiar with nature, or else they will not understand why it needs to be protected.

    But how does one teach a child to know nature? A new series of educational books called Outdoor School might be able to help. This series includes three textbooks, all of which offer a wealth of facts, skills, and pictures about the natural world to curious children. Titled Animal Watching, Hiking and Camping, and Rock, Fossil, and Shell Hunting, the books provide pages for making observations, answering questions, and reflecting (深思) on what the child has learned. Kids will learn how to identify wildflowers, build a rock collection, set up a tent and so much more.

    As a parent who has been homeschooling my kids for the past few months, these books have come in handy. I use Animal Watching as part of their daily lesson plan, requiring my kids to read one chapter ( 章 ) a day and take part in the activities outlined in the book. It has become the highlight of their day. They head outside with the book and pencil in hand and observe the comings and goings of birds and small animals in our yard or the parks.

    The series suits children living in all sorts of environments. There is plenty of information about animals, rocks and shells that can easily be found in urban parks or shorelines. Outdoor School does more than just get kids out into nature; it provides them with the tools to explore and understand it.
