二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Marian Bechtel sits at West Palm Beach’s Bar Louie counter by herself, quietly reading her e-book as she waits for her salad. What is she reading? None of your business! Lunch is Bechtel’s “me” time. And like more Americans, she’s not alone.

A new report found 46 percent of meals are eaten alone in America. More than half(53 percent) have breakfast alone and nearly half(46 percent) have lunch by themselves. Only at dinnertime are we eating together anymore, 74 percent, according to statistics from the report.

“I prefer to go out and be out. Alone, but together, you know?” Bechtel said, looking up from her book. Bechtel, who works in downtown West Palm Beach, has lunch with coworkers sometimes, but like many of us, too often works through lunch at her desk. A lunchtime escape allows her to keep a boss from tapping her on the shoulder. She returns to work feeling energized. “Today, I just wanted some time to myself,” she said.

Just two seats over, Andrew Mazoleny, a local videographer, is finishing his lunch at the bar. He likes that he can sit and check his phone in peace or chat up the barkeeper with whom he’s on a first-name basis if he wants to have a little interaction(交流). “I reflect on how my day’s gone and think about the rest of the week,” he said. “It’s a chance for self-reflection. You return to work recharged and with a plan.”

That freedom to choose is one reason more people like to eat alone. There was a time when people may have felt awkward about asking for a table for one, but those days are over. Now, we have our smartphones to keep us company at the table. “It doesn’t feel as alone as it may have before all the advances in technology,” said Laurie Demeritt, whose company provided the statistics for the report.

【1】What are the statistics in paragraph 2 about?

    A.Food variety.

    B.Eating habits.

    C.Table manners.

    D.Restaurant service.

【2】What do we know about Mazoleny?

A.He makes videos for the bar.

B.He’s fond of the food at the bar.

C.He interviews customers at the bar.

    D.He’s familiar with the barkeeper.

【3】What is the text mainly about?

A.The trend of having meals alone.

    B.The importance of self-reflection.

    C.The stress from working overtime.

    D.The advantage of wireless technology.

  • 27、CHAMBORD CASTLE, LOIR-ET-CHER, FRANCE

A remarkable example of classical French architecture, Chambord Castle is the largest castle in the Loire Valley of France. Built in 1519 as a hunting lodge for the royal court, the building was rarely lived in. There are one hundred rooms(of 440)open to the public and dozens of staircases, including one said to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The surrounding 21-square-mile nature park entertains with hiking and biking routes and boat rentals.

    LEEDS CASTLE, KENT, UNITED KINGDOM

Situated on two islands in the middle of a lake, Leeds Castle provides a grand and romantic experience. It has served as a royal residence for most of its 900-year history. The 500-acre English castle now hosts year-round cultural events, with three restaurants, a bed-and-breakfast and a yew tree maze.

    MOSZNA CASTLE, POLAND

Moszna Castle was originally designed in Baroque style in the 17th century, but the later addition of a neo-Gothic brought Hogwarts appeal to the castle, especially at night when its 99 towers and glowing windows twinkle in the outdoor reflecting pool. Nowadays, art exhibits and indoor concerts attract visitors to the 365-room castle.

    BRAN CASTLE, BRASOV, ROMANIA

Bran Castle originally dates back to the year 1212 and is mistakenly believed to be the home in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The author never visited this fortress, commonly known as Dracula’s Castle, but it still attracts literature fans to its weakly-lit hallways for night tours and an annual Halloween party.

  • 28、Last Thursday, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced that six red wolf pups had been born in the wild. That’s great news for endangered red wolves and marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2018. Since only 15 to 17 red wolves are still living in the wild, having six new wild-born pups is a huge deal.

Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.

In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed. It was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.

Fourteen of those wolves were caught and kept in captivity (圈养) to protect them. The program was called the Red Wolf Recovery Program and led by FWS. By 1980, red wolves were believed to be extinct in the wild.

Luckily, the wolves did well in captivity, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon, the FWS began releasing (放生) red wolves back into the wild. Between 1987 and 1994, the recovery program released 60 adult red wolves.

Over time, those wolves spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. In 2008, there were 47 wild pups born. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild.

Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell, the number of pups being born also began to drop. In 2018, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2019, 2020 and 2021, no wild pups were born at all. So, the news that six pups were born in the wild this year is a huge success.

【1】What is the right order for the events described in the passage?

① Six pups were born in the wild.

② 60 red wolves were set free into the wild.

③ 14 red wolves were caught.

④ The Endangered Species Act was passed.

    A.①③②④

    B.②③④①

    C.③②④①

    D.④③②①

【2】What do we know about the Red Wolf Recovery Program from the passage?

    A.It began in 1980.

B.It is a project started by the American government.

C.It aims to catch all the pure red wolves.

D.It was significant but ended in failure.

【3】Why did the number of red wolves become smaller after 2012?

A.Most of them were killed by other animals.

    B.Their habitat was destroyed.

C.Some adult wolves died in accidents.

    D.They were caught by humans.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Endangered red wolf pups born in the wild.

B.Laws made to protect wild-born red wolf pups.

C.Reasons why red wolves are endangered.

D.The importance of protecting wild red wolves.

  • 29、   Social media (社交媒体)is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank (智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily.

The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives.

    ●Changing relationships

High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication.

“It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said.

There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media.

“If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said.

Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another.

“I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via (通过) FaceTime,” Kaplan said.

    ●Wanting to be “liked”

The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves.

The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed (痴迷) with appearing perfect online.

Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊).

In particular, anonymous (匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyberbullying (网络欺凌).

The app allows users within 5 miles (8 km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt.

    ●Opening new doors

However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site YouTube.

“Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said.

But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction.

“Social media, though it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary.”

1What is the article mainly about?

A.The major problems with social media.

B.How teenagers benefit from social media.

C.The impact of social media on teenagers.

D.Why social media appeals so much to teenagers.

2How does social media change relationships, according to the article?

A.It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily.

B.It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them.

C.It enables users to understand accurately(精确地,准确地)what others are talking about online.

D.It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline.

3Essena O’Neill decided to disconnect(使分离)herself from social media because   .

A.she couldn’t put up with cyberbullying on social media

B.she wanted to spend more time with her friends in reality

C.she wanted to reduce her exposure to negative information online

D.she was bothered (烦扰)by her desire to look perfect on social media

4Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with?

A.If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves.

B.Social media can easily become an addiction, despite its benefits.

C.Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist.

D.The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations(动力、 动机).

A few years ago, I enjoyed my summer vacation at New York’s Harriman State Park with a good friend. The place 【1】 we were going to was the beautiful Lake Sebago. It was certainly a nice place with tent platforms, a number of kayaks and swimming areas. It was quite 【2】(convenience) for us to fish there.

Even though it jumped out of the water several times during my struggle with this very first fish, I was still able to hold on 【5】 (patient).

At this time, my friend began running around the dock like a child madly in search of something. I never realized what that reaction was about until he shouted at me, looking very 【6】 (excite), “Hey, man, congratulations to you. This is the biggest fish that 【7】(catch) by us since half a year ago.”

I caught a total of six fish that day. There are many 【8】 (benefit) from fishing beside a lake or a river. It is both an 【9】(recreate) and an entertainment. I will never be fed 【10】 with such an outdoor activity.
