二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I have a neighbour we call Happy. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh(难听的) word to anyone or about anyone.

Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbours watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben's beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her backyard.

Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighbourhood over for an “allday food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn't know what was about to take place.

By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra  and  squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By 5:00 pm, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(大量给予之物) of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!

Well, the point wasn't so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another's company. None of it would have happened if it had not been for Happy and Ben's garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decide to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!

【1】 We can infer that Happy and her husband Ben________.

    A. are a generous and warmhearted couple

    B. sometimes quarrel with each other

    C. live on the food they grow in their garden

    D. don't like spending time with others

【2】According to Paragraph 2, people wished they also had a garden so that ________.

    A. they didn't have to spend so much money on food

    B. they could grow vegetables and sell them at the market

    C. they could invite their neighbours and hold parties in it

    D. they could spend happy hours together with their families in it

【3】 For what purpose did Happy and Ben invite the neighbours to their garden?

    A. To ask them to attend a birthday party.

    B. To help them get to know each other.

    C. To ask them to share some interesting stories.

    D. To let them enjoy what they grew in the garden.

【4】What did the writer most probably think of the time he spent in the garden?

    A. It was too long.

    B. It was wonderful.

    C. It was not as good as he thought.

    D. It was too terrible.

  • 27、BRAZIL—The newly-elected president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro says that his country should withdraw(退出) from the 2015 Paris Agreement, and that Brazil’s rainforest protections are standing in the way of economic success. During the election campaign, he promised to ease(减缓) protections for areas of the Brazilian Amazon set aside for native people and wildlife. Are Brazil’s rainforests in danger?

The Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, is called “the lungs of the planet.” Each tree takes in and stores carbon dioxide from the air around it. Billions of trees pull up water through their roots and release water vapor into the air, forming tiny drops of water. The Amazon creates 30 to 50 percent of its own rainfall. Carlos Nobre, a climate scientist, says that it is almost impossible to say just how important the rainforest is to the planet’s living systems.

Some of Bolsonaro’s support comes from business and farming groups. One supporter, Luiz Carlos, noted that farmers “are not invaders, they are producers.” He blamed(责备) the past government for supporting rainforest protections at the cost of farmers. “Brazil,” he said, “will be the biggest farming nation on Earth during Bolsonaro’s years.”

Paulo Artaxo, a professor of environmental physics at the University of Sao Paulo, says that if Bolsonaro keeps his campaign promises, then “deforestation(毁坏) of the Amazon will probably increase quickly — and the effects will be felt everywhere on the planet.”

Other scientists warn that if the Amazon and other tropical rainforests lose too many trees, this could affect rainfall in other areas. Without enough trees to support the rainfall, the longer and bigger dry season could turn more than half of the rainforest into a tropical grassland.

【1】According to the passage, rainforests can ________.

    A.produce much farmland

    B.examine people’s lungs

    C.change the earth’s living system.

    D.destroy farmers’ crops

【2】The first paragraph is intended to ________.

A.attract the public to the newly-elected president

B.ask people to ease the protection of rainforests

C.draw people’s attention to the disappearing rainforests

D.to complain about the new government’s withdrawing

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The new president’s supporters care less about farmers.

B.Scientists are concerned about the protection of rainforests.

C.The rainforests will stop the economic development in Brazil.

D.The past government is to blame for the destruction of rainforests.

【4】The passage is probably taken from ________.

    A.a newspaper

    B.a magazine

    C.a guidebook

    D.a textbook

  • 28、It’s an age-old question: How can we extend our lives and make the years we have as disease and pain-free as possible? If you look on social media, any number of so-called experts are providing quick-fix tips for extending longevity. One suggestion, according to experts is that if you want to extend your life, you need to start today.

LeBrasseur is the co-director of the Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research. He says that without question the research shows that exercise is the most effective and healthy means to extend healthy aging. The goal, he says, is to decrease disease rate until the very end of life and exercise is a great tool for this. According to LeBrasseur, exercise seems particularly effective at prevent aging. Extensive evidence has shown that exercise like running, swimming, biking and lifting weights extends heart and cognitive health.

But while structured exercise is important, daily nonstructural movement is also key to living a long and healthy life. Online shopping, screen time and virtual everything have engineered movement right out of our day, which works against healthy aging, says LeBrasseur. From grocery shopping to walking to the mailbox to parking further away from your destination, expanding daily movement is best if you want to prosper in later years. “Physical inactivity is one of the biggest challenges to healthy aging,” he says.

Beyond movement, LeBrasseur says those with positive attitude in their life also tend to be happier and healthier. This is hard to quantify compared to exercise and we don’t know the working system, but it could be related to the fact that positivity contributed to health.

The third leg to our healthy aging stool is, not surprisingly, diet. Three times a day, every day, your diet is your daily medicine if you choose the right foods. And according to an abundance of evidence, the Mediterranean diet — a way of eating inspired by those living near the Mediterranean Sea — is the healthiest way to live a long life.

In the end, longevity is about the long game. Exercise, movement, a positive outlook and a Mediterranean diet are simple enough, but it takes efforts to make them happen. Still, being able to move, love, eat and enjoy yourself later in life, now that’s a worthwhile devotion.

【1】What is LeBrasseur’s opinion on exercise?

A.It is the only way to prevent aging.

B.It contributes significantly to a long life.

C.It can surely cure all kinds of heart diseases.

D.It is the biggest challenge to healthy aging.

【2】What does the underlined word “quantify” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Work out.

    B.Pick up.

    C.Take in.

    D.Relate to.

【3】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Entertainment.

    B.Health.

    C.Education.

    D.Travel.
