二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Human is struggling to contain two major crises: Skyrocketing global temperatures and deep-diving biodiversity (生物多样性). But people tend to solve each problem on its own, for instance by using green energies and carbon-eating machines, while surrounding ecosystems to preserve them. But a new report argues that treating each crisis in isolation (孤立地) means missing out on solutions that resolve both. Human can't solve one without also solving the other.

So what might these solutions look like? Say, for instance, you turn a heavily logged forest into a national park. As the trees grow back, they would provide habitat for the return of animals. Letting a forest come back naturally, rather than planting a single species of tree to balance up some corporation's carbon emissions (排放), makes it recover faster. This is known as a nature-based solution, a campaign that both absorb carbon and provides an extra ecological or economic benefit.

Stopping human's attacks on ecosystems can also help fight climate change, the study's authors write. Even cities can get in on the action, the report notes. Urban areas turn into "heat islands" because they absorb the sun's energy during the day and slowly release it at night. They are therefore much hotter than surrounding rural areas. Planting more trees cools cities and provides habitats for birds and shade for humans, which will be even more critical as global temperatures rise.

The big threat, the authors stress, is that nature-based solutions alone can't stop climate change. As temperatures climb and droughts get more severe, it'll be harder for forests, wetlands, and mangroves to survive, even with our help. First and foremost, human has to dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. “Nature is not going to save us." the authors say. “We can only use nature to support efforts.”

“Still, governments and corporations are becoming more conscious of the importance of maintaining biodiversity while also fighting climate change," says Beymer-Farris, from the University of Kentucky. “I myself, as a professor who has been working in this for 20 years, I see a lot of hope, because I see a lot of change on the horizon."

【1】How should people deal with the two crises?

    A.By using carbon-eating machines.

B.By giving priority to one of them.

C.By tackling them in the meanwhile.

    D.By establishing more nature reserves.

【2】What is the most effective way to stop climate change according to the author?

A.Plant more trees in urban areas.

    B.Adopt nature- based solutions.

    C.Send out less greenhouse gas.

    D.Provide habitats for animals.

【3】What is Beymer- Farris's attitude to the future of the ecology?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Critical.

    D.Concerned.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Why we care about climate change

B.How to live in harmony with nature

C.Why urban areas become “heat islands"

D.How to protect species and save the planet

  • 28、   It is surprising that eating three meals a day—breakfast, lunch and dinner—has been a custom only since 1890. Before this time, English tradition only included two meals a day—breakfast and dinner.

In the 16th century, breakfast was a snack, with no fixed menu. Its only purpose was to break one’s fast from the night. But 200 years later it had become a large meal, not just for the family, but for guests as well. It was a social event. It began at 10 am and lasted until 1pm. Then breakfast began to be less popular. It became, instead, a lighter meal and was taken at a much earlier hour. By 1850 it had been pushed back to 8 am and became a family meal.

Dinner, however, became larger later. In the 16th century it was eaten at 11 am. Years later, it was moved to the early afternoon, then to 5 pm. By 1850 dinner time had reached 7 pm. Lunch is a recent idea. It first appeared as a snack to fill the gap between breakfast and dinner.

    D.The purpose of fasting.

【3】What does the text lead the reader to believe?

A.Our pattern of meals is based on English customs.

    B.Before 1890 people couldn’t afford three meals a day.

C.People ate at different times to avoid boredom.

D.People can have two or three meals a day.

  • 29、   If you know a bottle of water has been recycled from urine (尿液), will you drink it? Chinese astronauts have done so.

China National Space Administration(CNSA)says it uses a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater. The machine will recycle everything from sweat, the water for washing hands, shower water, water used for brushing teeth, and even urine, to make drinking water.

It saves CNSA millions of YMB each year. At present, each CNSA astronaut uses about 4.4 liters of water every day. It costs about 150 million a year to transport water up to space.

The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations because it won’t have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttles or rockets. Besides, it’s important as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to more.

The recycling system was brought up to the space station last August by space shuttles. The three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in CNSA center that worked on the system.

“This is something that has been the stuff of science work,” astronaut Chen Dong said before taking a small mouthful. “The taste is well worth trying.”

Is the water clean? Scientists say the wastewater will go through a very complicated (复杂的) process. For example, different chemicals will be put in the wastewater; the water will be heated to 130C to get rid of bacteria. The recycled water is thousands of times better than the water from a city tap, scientists say.

1What can the water recycled from urine be used for?

    A.Drinking.

    B.Washing hands.

    C.Brushing teeth.

    D.Taking a bath.

2Why is a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater needed on space stations?

A.To get astronauts to keep healthy.

    B.To help astronauts do experiments.

C.To provide astronauts a basic living condition.

D.To save the cost of transporting water up to space.

3Scientists get rid of bacteria in the wastewater by ________.

    A.recycling

    B.freezing

    C.heating

    D.collecting

4What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Water recycled from urine tastes good.

B.How to recycle the wastewater on space.

C.New technology is used in the Chinese space station.

D.CNSA uses a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater for astronaut stations.
