二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Growing up, my grandparents bought a second home among a small forest in Arkansas and would bring me there every single summer. I would spend a lot of time outside there following my grandfather around while he did yard work. We would collect cool-looking rocks and refill the hummingbird feeders.

I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds were at the feeders so that I could watch them. I would explore around in the yard by myself sometimes to look for interesting rocks and if I was lucky I would find a turtle. If I did find a turtle, my grandfather would put it in the kiddy pool for me to observe for a few minutes. I was always amazed by these creatures. After I finished observing the turtle, my grandfather would pick it back up and return it to the bush I found it in. I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and crawled back under.

I always felt very at peace at my grandparents’ home. It was quiet and full of interesting natural things I never got to see in Illinois. They disturbed the land around them as little as possible and didn’t see it as nuisance (令人讨厌的东西), rather a beautiful view.

As Aldo Leopold, an American scientist, puts it, we should take the time to appreciate and observe the natural world around us. When we do this, we find it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources. Conservation(n.保护) of the natural world is important because we are dependent upon it for life. We cannot worsen such a bountiful provider at such a rate in which it will never return to anything like what it once was. Our experiences with nature are what will drive us to reach this conclusion, if only everyone took the time to really involve themselves in it.

【1】What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 2?

A.His interest in rocks and animals.

    B.His connection with natural world.

C.His daily routine in summer vacation.

    D.His close relationship with Grandparents.

【2】What does “a bountiful provider” refer to in the last paragraph?

    A.Nature.

    B.Illinois.

    C.The small forest.

    D.Grandparents’ home.

【3】What is the writer most likely to get across?

    A.Past experiences should be treasured.

B.Nature offers man a journey of discovery.

C.Quality time with family is of great value.

D.Into the nature, you will know how precious it is.

【4】In which forum would you most likely find the text?

    A.Family Matters

    B.On the Road

    C.At One with Nature

    D.The Economist

  • 28、Jet airplanes are one of the largest causes of human pollution. About 3% of the world’s carbon emissions(碳排放)are believed to come from airline travel. Thai number is likely to go up—the number of people traveling by plane has been growing for years, and is expected to keep increasing.

To help fight climate change, Dutch airline KLM has started a program asking people to “ Fly Responsibly”.   The company is asking its customers to think about their choices before they buy a plane ticket. In a video, the airline suggests that travelers ask themselves questions, such as whether they could lake a train instead.

However, some people have suggested that instead of asking the public to think carefully about their actions, KLM, and other airlines, need to be considering solutions that lie with the industry itself . “ Voluntary (主动的)actions by customers are not enough; the cost of flying must increase." said Justin Francis, founder of Responsible Travel.

Anna Hughes, who runs Flight Free UK, Sees much of the “greening" in aviation(航空) as problematic. She said, “The simple fact is that climate change, worsened by our use of (fossil fuels(化石燃料),will make it difficult for our children to live on this planet. While we welcome action,to make aviation friendlier to the environment, airlines must be honest about their influence on climate change."

But the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is backing the KLM program. Rafael Schwartzman, IATA's vice-president for Europe, said, “We support it in the sense that you do have a choice. In certain cases you could have another choice. " But, he added, “the UK is an island. If you want to trade internationally, you will have to count on aviation.”

    B.Think twice before they fly.

【2】What’s Francis’s solution for greening aviation?

    A.To turn to cleaner fuels.

B.To raise the price of tickets.

    C.To encourage customers to volunteer.

D.To tell the public how to cut air pollution.

【3】What’s the IATA’s attitude towards “Fly Responsibly”?

    B.Doubtful.

  • 29、Archaeologists in Italy are learning more and more about the everyday life of the people who lived in Pompeii nearly 2,000 years ago. Pompeii is an ancient city world-known for being suddenly buried in the year 79 by the nearby volcano, with over 1,100 people killed almost instantly by the extreme heat.

People began unearthing Pompeii in the mid-1700s. Over the years, scientists have discovered more and more about the life of these people who were sadly frozen in time. Archaeologists have discovered theatres, swimming pools, gyms, hospitals, and many different kinds of stores. In 2019, Italian archaeologists announced they were working to unearth a snack bar, or a thermopolium. As the bar was in such a great shape, they were determined to unearth the whole area.

A thermopolium has a long, low counter with many clay pots built into it to hold the food and drinks. What was special about this one was that even the pictures on counter walls were in almost perfect condition, almost exactly the way people would have seen them years ago. Some of the paintings on the wall show ducks and roosters — examples of food served at the snack bar.

The archaeologists discovered in the counter many large clay jars holding food and drinks, and two jars holding fish and pork. They also found a mixture of snails, fish, and sheep, which they believe may have been some sort of soup. Additionally, they found the skeleton (骨架) of a small dog, as well as the bones of at least two people, one of whom was about fifty, and appeared to have been asleep when killed by the volcano.

The archaeologists say they're really only just beginning to understand all that they can learn from this snack bar. Because the site was so complete, they expect it to demonstrate many more of the hidden secrets of Pompeii.

【1】What can be found in the thermopolium?

    A.Silver pots.

    B.Swimming pools.

    C.Wall paintings.

    D.Teenage bones.

【2】What might the underline word “demonstrate” in paragraph 5 means?

    B.Pompeii Came Back to Life

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Once there lived a girl named Melanie. The little girl was living with a dream. She wanted to be a ballet dancer. Her body was very flexible and she had a strong will power. Melanie’s parents never knew of the great dancing skills their daughter had until one day, they saw the little one dancing with the beautiful steps of a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员).

“Isn’t it strange? Melanie is dancing so well without any formal training!” the mother said.

“We must give her professional lessons to help her improve her skills,” her father said.

The following day, Melanie’s parents took her to a local dance training school. Upon meeting the dance teacher, her parents requested Melanie’s admission to the school. The teacher asked Melanie to dance. The little girl was happy and showed some of her favorite dance steps. However, the teacher didn’t seem interested in her performance. He kept himself busy with other tasks in the dance room while the little girl continued dancing with the hope of impressing the teacher.

“That’s OK. You can leave now!” the teacher said.

Melanie was shocked to hear this. So were her parents. They couldn’t believe their ears.

“The girl is average. She does not have it in her to become a ballerina,” the dance teacher said. “Don’t let her waste her time dreaming of one day becoming a dancer.”

Disappointed, Melanie and her parents returned home. Tears rolled down Melanie’s face. Her dreams were shattered (粉碎) within a matter of minutes. With crushed (    的) confidence, Melanie never attempted to dance again. She completed her studies and went on to become a teacher in school. Life was good and she kept herself busy with family and work. However, whenever she happened to pass the school’s ballet room, memories of childhood days danced before her eyes.
