二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two-songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their ability to enjoy music sets them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally(故意地)stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists arc finally learning bow to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t sec certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed. For years. Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks. I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”

1Which of the following is true of amusics?

    A. They can easily tell two different songs apart.

    B. They love places where they are likely to hear music.

    C. Listening to music is not enjoyable for them.

    D. Their situation is well understood by musicians.

2According to paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who ______ .

    A. dislikes listening to speeches   B. can hear anything nonmusical

    C. lacks a complex(复杂的)hearing system   D. has a bearing problem

3In the last paragraph, Margaret express her wish that ______ .

    A. her problem with music had been diagnosed(诊断)earlier

    B. she were seventeen years old rather than seventy

    C. her problem could be easily explained

    D. she were able to meet other amusics

4What is the passage mainly concerned with?

    A. Amusics’ strange behaviors.

    B. Some people’s inability to enjoy music.

    C. Musical talent and brain structure.

    D. Identification and treatment of amusics.

  • 27、   They may be small, but they build big things! Coral(珊瑚虫), which live in the warm parts of the Earth's oceans, are probably the biggest builders on the planet. Coral polyps turn calcium()from seawater into a kind of hard stone. Slowly, they build up a hard skeleton(外骨骼)around their bodies. When polyps die, their skeletons remain. Young polys attach themselves to the old skeletons and make new skeletons. Over time, various shapes are slowly built up into amazing coral reefs(珊瑚礁).

Scientists sometimes think of coral reefs as underwater cities. There are nearly a thousand coral species. Reefs are also home to millions of sea creatures, like fish, crabs, turtles, and sharks.

Humans don't live in coral reef cities, but we get a lot from them. Reefs create jobs for people in the fishing industry and other related businesses. They also supply us with food. Reefs protect our coasts-the coral slows waves down and protects beaches from wearing. Chemicals from reef creatures help scientists create new medicines, which help doctors treat different illnesses.

Coral reefs are very important, yet we don’t take good care of them. Environmental problems have already killed about twenty percent of the world’s reefs. About half of the remaining reefs are dying, and experts believe all of Earth's coral reefs will be in danger by 2050.

People catch too many reef fish and often damage the reefs. Polluted water also causes problems because reef-destroying algae(海藻)grow in dirty water. Even air pollution hurts coral reefs. Global warming causes warmer ocean water, which can cause polyps to lose helpful algae. Without the algae, coral turns white. If it continues, the coral dies.

Can we save coral reefs? Experts say yes-if we make hard choices. Many people around the world are working to protect reefs. Humans and coral polyps are very different, but we both build amazing cities. We will both win if people protect our beautiful oceans.

1What can be learned about coral reefs?

A.They turn calcium into stones. B.They can be found in cold waters.

C.They provide food for coral polyps. D.They are formed by the growth of coral

2How do coral reefs help humans?

A.By taking in pollution. B.By protecting beaches.

C.By improving the environment. D.By giving out important chemicals.

3The helpful algae give coral its   .

  • 28、   One of the biggest disadvantages to a manned mission to Mars is the fuel problem. If future Mars explorers ever want to return to Earth, they’ll need not only enough fuel to get to Mars, but also enough fuel to get back home. It’s a difficult problem that can best be solved if there is some way of producing fuel on Mars itself.

Now, in a brilliant new plan outlined by a NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) team leader Kurt Leucht, the dream of making fuel right on Mars itself appears to be a real possibility. And what is the only raw material needed to make rocket fuel Martian soil.

The NASA team’s method involves taking out water from Mar’s distinctive red dirt, and using a process to separate it into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen can then be combined with carbon dioxide, which is plentiful in Mars’ atmosphere, to make methane, which can be used as rocket fuel.

Of course, all of this requires time and on-site factory that’s up to the task. For that, NASA is developing a team of robots that can be set up on Mars years in advance of a return trip to Earth, which will tirelessly work to make rocket fuel.

The whole plan does have one small problem: the water content of Martian soil. If we start digging and there’s no water, or far less than expected, that could be a trouble. But scientists are becoming more and more confident about the amount of water stored in it, which can even supply the survival needs of astronauts who plan to stay a while on the Red Planet.

“This technology will one day allow humans to live and work on Mars,” wrote Leucht, “and return to Earth to tell the story.”

【1】According to the passage, what is NASA’s new plan about?

    A.Making rocket fuel on Mars.

    B.Finding water in Martian soil.

C.Sending a team of robots to Mars.

A.Analyzing the possibility of getting hydrogen.

B.Explaining the method of making fuel on Mars.

C.Showing how to combine hydrogen with carbon.

D.Introducing how to take out water from Martian soil.

【3】What is the possible problem with the new plan?

A.It requires a lot of robots to make the plan come true.

B.The method of making fuel only works well in theory.

C.The amount of carbon dioxide in Mars’s atmosphere is limited.

D.It is uncertain whether there is enough water in Martian soil.

【4】What is Leucht’s attitude toward the plan?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Doubtful.

    Friday nights were usually fine.

The window was open. Outside, in the garden, the flowers were at their best thanks to Grandfather’s care and patience.

In the living room, Grandfather and Father were playing chess when Dean came up hesitantly saying that he decided to play in a band rather than go to university.

Raising his eyes, Father turned around and laughed. “You can’t be serious, my son! Is making music a job? What about your future career as a lawyer?”

Dean stood longer and firmly replied it was music that he was really interested in and he would never leave it behind.

Father sighed, trying hard to hold back his anger. He repeated his usual ideas that his son should take advantage of what he had achieved as a successful and respectable lawyer.

Then Grandfather rose, stepped between Father and Dean, but failed to calm them down.

Dean froze with watery eyes. Then he rushed into his own rom, leaving the topic to the other two.
