二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Learn how to improve spoken English with our five quick tips.

    Repeat the language!

Repeat words and sentences over and over again until you can say them really fluently. 【1】The more you say it, the more it becomes fixed in your brain, and then later when you’re speaking, it’ll come out naturally.

    【2】

First, write out in note form the story you want to tell, and then using those notes, practise telling the story. Now this story could be something that happened to you or from a magazine. Just choose whatever you want, and practise telling it.

    Memorise language!

【3】 You can do this by writing them out, or by speaking them out loud so that you’ll be speaking normally.

And the more you do this, the more they’ll stick in your mind.

    Simultaneous (同步的) speaking!

Simultaneous speaking--it sounds difficult but it’s quite easy. And it’s something as easy as, you take an audio file(音频文件), and you listen along to it, and as you listen to it, you read it at the same time. 【4】 So, you’re trying to copy the intonation (语调), the pronunciation, the word stress(重音), and the sentence stress.

    Practise forming questions!

Look at a sentence and see if you can change that into a question.【5】So, for example, when seeing the sentence, “She’s seen the film,” you need to change it into the question, “Has she seen the film?” And the more you do this, the more fluent and quicker you’ll get at making questions.

    A.Listen to English!

    B.Practise telling stories!

C.But you can read your coursebook or a magazine.

D.Try and remember as many phrases and expressions as you can.

E.Making questions is quite difficult if you haven’t been practising it.

F.For example, say “I went to the shops, I went to the shops” repeatedly.

G.And as you read it, you try to say it at the same time as the other person speaking.

  • 27、   Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.

Given that I teach students who are trained to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most students thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”.“What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.

“Surgery (整形手术)”, one replied.I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job.One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height.“They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows. You can get at least 5 cm taller!”

At that point, I was shocked.I am short.I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of pain just to be a few centimeters taller.I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!

It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.

No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm(标准).Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost.In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.

1We can know from the passage that the author works as ________.

    A.a doctor B.a model C.a teacher D.a reporter

2Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to ________.

    A.marry a better man/woman B.become a model

C.get an advantage over others in job-hunting D.attract more admirers

3What was the author’s reaction towards the girl’s decision?

    A.Excited. B.Surprised. C.Happy. D.Angry.

4According to the passage, the author believes that ________.

A.everyone should pursue perfection, whatever the cost

B.it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs

C.media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery

D.it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career

  • 28、Daria was a successful photographer living in Russia’s capital city of Moscow when she decided to leave the busy city life behind — which is why she now lives in the woods with over 100 rescued animals.

As a child growing up in Russia, Daria had always dreamed of rescuing dogs and opening up her own dog shelter. Though she ended up working as an excellent wedding photographer in Moscow, she always felt a desire to leave everything behind in search of something more.

Daria’s first rescue was a one-eyed little dog from the local animal control. She soon started taking in more rescued animals, especially those that had special needs.

Her rescue efforts kept snowballing until one day when Daria finally decided to follow through on her dream and buy a country house in a forest 100 miles from Moscow.

Daria and her husband now use it to care for over 100 animals. In addition to rescuing dogs, she also saves animals from the fur farming industry.

Many people have contacted Daria and asked her to take in rescued and unwanted dogs, many of which either have behavioral special needs, or disabilities — but if they had not been taken in by the Russian couple, then they would most likely have been abandoned.

They now devote their entire lives to taking care of their rescued animals. They mostly spend their days making sure that all the dogs have been fed, giving the animals their medication, and keeping all of the living spaces clean and tidy.

Since the Russian couple mostly lives off the grid, they use solar panels for electricity and thanks to a little help from their friends, they also now have running water.

【1】What do the underlined words in the fourth paragraph reflect?

A.Daria was saving more and more animals.

B.Daria was interested in snow activities.

C.Daria was eager to feed some pets.

D.Daria was tired of saving animals.

【2】What word can best describe Daria?

    A.Caring.

    B.Creative.

    C.Passive.

    D.Mean.

【3】What does the last paragraph imply?

    A.The couple lack money.

B.The couple don’t like country life.

C.The couple’s friends offer no help to them.

D.The couple’s living conditions are very hard.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.A photographer’s hard choice.

    B.Country life and city life.

C.A couple’s life of saving animals.

    D.Russia’s farming industry.

  • 29、   You might think that if you’ve been born with working ears, listening shouldn’t be all that hard. But up to one in four leaders struggles with listening skills, and it’s common to be a bad listener in day-to-day life.

1 One answer is that many of us listen to respond rather than to hear what’s being said. When we’re chatting with someone, we’re constantly thinking of what we’re going to say next instead of actually processing what the other party is saying. The moment they’re done speaking, we leap in with a comment or question.

We do it because we want to be good conversationalists and avoid uncomfortable pauses (停顿) in the discussion. But often the result is the other person feels unheard. 2

“Before you respond in a conversation, take a breath. Not an enormous, loud, obvious breath that screams out ‘I am trying a new technique for better listening!’ No, just a normal, simple, ordinary breath. That’s it.”

3  Yes, insists Miller. He’s noticed positive effects in everyday conversations. “I find I interrupt people a lot less often,” he reports. “In response, people seem more relaxed when we are talking.”

He’s not the only one to spot a difference. On New York Magazine’s blog, The Cut, Katie Heany describes a sort of natural experiment that shows the power of simply taking a breath before you respond. “A friend of a friend who currently lives in France often pauses a lot before she replies, mainly because her French is only somewhat fluent. 4 This is not something she hears much in English,” she writes.

You don’t have to be barely fluent in a language to achieve “great listener” status. All you need is this simple technique. 5

A.The solution, according to psychologist Kenneth E. Miller, is incredibly simple.

B.There are many ways to improve your listening skills.

C.Could something so small make a difference?

D.Why do we struggle with listening?

E.People can use the pause to dig deeper into their thoughts.

F.Go ahead, give it a try and see if it works for you.

G.As a result, all her French friends tell her she’s an amazing listener.
