  • 27、Why You Should Not Worry About Procrastination

Perhaps every person on Earth has at least once been in a situation when he or she has an urgent task to do, but instead of challenging it head on, he or she postpones working on this task for as long as possible. This delay can take various forms: from doing nothing, to doing a lot of work–just not the work that should be done. The phenomenon described here is called procrastination, and its roots go much deeper than mere laziness.

【1】. They invent dozens of strategies how to stop procrastinating and increase their efficiency, forgetting about the fact that like many other psychological mechanisms, procrastination serves its own purpose, and probably even carries a message worth decoding. So, instead of blaming yourself for being lazy, the next time you procrastinate, try to look past it, and figure out what is happening to you. Most likely, procrastination is your friend. Why?

There are several arguments proving this statement. First of all, it helps you figure out your most pressing priorities. Usually, you will not procrastinate over some minor task such as sharpening a pencil or drinking a glass of water. Problems start when there is something important or difficult that needs to be done. Reasons keeping you from doing work can be different, but here is a clue to remember: try to figure out what exactly makes you avoid–as a rule, it should be exactly what your top priority task is at the moment. 【2】. On the other hand, procrastination may serve you as an indicator that you are doing something wrong, or that you are pushing yourself too hard and need to take some time to rest. Either way, the means you use to overcome procrastination is a different story; so far, try seeing procrastination as a marker, an index–and you will discover that it can be quite useful.

Surprisingly enough, procrastination can even help you fix a relationship with another person. If you had a fight, for example, there is a period of time when whatever you say to each other will most likely be perceived with skepticism or even hostility. 【3】. In this case, procrastination may give you enough time to make up your mind, find your courage, and think of the proper words or actions for an apology. The same works for another person: after a cool down period, he or she will be more susceptible to what you have to say. Use this to your advantage.

As we can see, procrastination is not necessarily a bad thing. 【4】. But it is rather a psychological instrument, the main function of which is to slow you down and give you enough time to sort out your priorities, gather information before making an important decision, or finding proper words to make your amends with another person. Thus, instead of avoiding and denying procrastination, you might want to embrace it–at least sometimes.examly.cn

A.Besides, you might have noticed how unwilling you may be when having to apologize in front of a different person–even if it was you who were wrong.

B.This varies depending on the weight of a decision that needs to be made.

C.Unlike many people got used to believing, procrastination is not a negative feature of character such as laziness.

D.Usually, people tend to see procrastination as something bad.

E.In fact, procrastinating in this case is also beneficial.

F.A pressing matter, an urgent document that needs to be written by the end of the day, an especially difficult piece of work, whatever.

  • 28、As an English teacher, I found that English slang (俚语) can be more difficult for those who learn English as a second language to understand. This became clear when I was talking to one of my students, Cathy, in Japan. “Excuse me, Miss White. I want to go to buy a notebook outside the school.” “It’s bucketing outside,” I said. It is an English slang expression which means “it is raining”. However, she didn’t seem to understand what I said.

The point I’m trying to get across is that being puzzled about English slang in the beginning is perfectly natural because it is what makes the language special. But learning some slang is a fantastic way of understanding the culture of a country. English does have some interesting slang. Here is some of my favorite slang which is common in Northern Ireland.

To keel over: If someone keels over, it basically means that he/she has fallen over because he/she has passed out or died.

To be in bed with your head: This is used to describe someone who has gone to bed because he/she has a headache.

To upset the apple cart: This means that someone has caused trouble or upset someone’s plans.

Dead on: This means “exactly right”, “perfect”, or shows that someone agrees with what you’ve said.

Slang can be difficult to learn but it’s really impressive when you get it right! Slang also helps you sound friendly, so it’s great for making friends. If you can use some of these English expressions in a conversation, people will be amazed!

【1】How did Cathy feel when the author said “It’s bucketing outside”?

    A.She was unhappy.

    B.She was surprised.

    C.She was worried.

    D.She was puzzled.

【2】What does the author say about slang?

A.It tells us the history of a country.

B.It is created by language teachers.

C.It shows the culture of a country.

D.It is used to impress foreigners.

【3】If someone says “Does the word mean ‘elevator’?”, what could you say?

    A.I keel over.

    B.You’re dead on.

    C.You upset the apple cart.

D.I’m in bed with my head.

【4】In which part of a newspaper can we read this text?

    A.Culture.

    B.Science.

    C.Travel.

    D.Lifestyle.

  • 29、Culture shock is the psychological(心理的)shock of having to adapt to new environment and new cultures which may be completely different from your own. To understand culture shock helps to understand what culture is.

Culture shock is caused by the feelings that result from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse(交往). Those signs include the ways with which we are familiar in daily life: When to shake hands and what to say when we meet people? When and how to give tips? How to go shopping? When to accept and when to refuse invitations? These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, customs or normals are gained by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the language we speak.

During the first few weeks when a person enters a strange culture, most people are attracted by the new. But this “cooks tour” type of mentality(心态)does not normally last if the foreign visitor remain abroad and has to seriously deal with real conditions of life. He may feel anxious and frustrated(受挫的) People react to the frustration in the same way. During the first period, they reject the environment which causes the discomfort. “The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad,” they complain about the host country and its people. The following period is homesickness. The home environment suddenly becomes so important that all difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered.

Experiencing culture shock can be very difficult. There is a risk of sickness or emotional problems. However, culture shock can be part of a positive learning experience. Be patient! It is a process of adaptation to new situations. If you do like this, you will be a much stronger person, and you will be a citizen of the world.

    1What causes culture shock?

    A. The loss of one’s memory.

    B. The doubt about one’s cultural identity.

    C. The removal of one’s familiar signs.

    D. The differences in language speaking.

2Which of the following does a person first experience after arriving abroad?

    A. Homesickness.   B. Memory.

    C. Adaptation.   D. Curiosity.

3What is the writer’s attitude towards culture shock?

    A. Positive.   B. Cautious.

    C. Doubtful.   D. Uninterested.

4What’s the topic of the passage?

    A. Travel tips.   B. Experience abroad.

    C. Culture shock.   D. Psychological shock.
