27、Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older people company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar from the National Science Foundation for a special project.
They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat. The cat has already been for sale for two years. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people.
Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor.
It is an idea that has appealed (有吸引力) to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliott is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.
The scientists are studying how people feel about the robot cats, as well as the everyday lives of elderly people. The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate.

28、Last month I had a meeting in Seattle, so I decided to bring the whole family and make a trip out of it. We had always wanted to take the train down the coast, so we decided this was the perfect opportunity. We flew up to Seattle, had a few fun days to explore the city and then boarded a train in Seattle in the morning.
We arrived at the train station about 25 minutes before the train left. There were only a few other people in line, so getting on the train was so easy.
The scenery was beautiful and exciting. It was so great to sit next to the window and watch the country go by, which was very enjoyable. The train traveled all along the water as we headed south to Oregon.
The best part about the train was that you could get up and walk around to do stuff, and actually there was a lot of stuff to do. You could go to the observation car. There you could relax and watch the scenery. They also had a theater car where they were showing Arthur Christmas, which kept the kids entertained. There was also the dining car that served meals. The agent came around before every meal and made a reservation (预订). The food was fine, but not amazing. But everything was served in a way as if you were at a restaurant. It was fun to eat with a view of Mount Hood outside your window.
When it was time to sleep, the agent helped us fold down our beds into double bunk beds (双层铺位). I didn’t get a picture of this, but it felt comfortable.
We had a great experience and have even been talking about taking a train trip across the country again sometime.

29、 Modern life is impossible without traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by air. With a modern airliner you can travel in one day to places which it took a month or more to get to a hundred years ago.
Traveling by train is slower than by air, but it has its own advantages. For example, you can see the country you are traveling through. Besides, modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They make even the longest journey enjoyable and comfortable.
Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible. There are large liners and river boats. You can visit many other countries and different places. Traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like. You can stop wherever you wish—where there is something interesting to see, at a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal, or at a hotel to spend the night. A few years ago, the company that I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go running before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers (抢劫犯) in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me 10 dollars and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into (撞到) me. He said sorry to me and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it.
However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was a little strange. The warning of robbers in the park hit me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became anxious, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the 10 dollars! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me.
Filled with anger, I shook my fist (拳头) at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me 10 dollars. Then he ran away as fast as he could. I bought the bread and went home.
As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I said with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked.

But I didn’t give up finding him and for several days, I waited at the same place in the park.
