26、University of Maryland student Ben Simon and his friends couldn’t stand to see good food thrown out on their campus. “We basically noticed that some of the extra food from the dining hall was going to waste at the end of the day. And we met with the dining services and asked them whether it would be okay if instead of throwing out the food we could donate it. And they were on board.” he said.
So 18 months ago, the students began what they call the Food Recovery Network. Each night, volunteers would show up at a campus dining hall to pick up leftovers and deliver them to area shelters and food banks. So far, they have donated more than 23,000 kilos of food that would otherwise have been thrown out.
Nationwide, $165 billion worth of food is wasted each year, according to the National Resources Defense Council. Spokesman Bob Keefe says that is about 40% of the country’s entire food production. “If we can reduce our waste in this country by 15%, we can feed 25 million hungry Americans. That is a huge benefit. That is what programs like this Food Recovery Network are doing. ” he said.
Christian Life Center is one of the beneficiaries of the students’ efforts. Ben Slye, the senior pastor(牧师), said, “It has been just amazing to see these students take their own time, their own vehicles and own gas money and be able to make an effort like this. Each week we are able with this food probably to feed over hundred people.”
The University of Maryland’s Food Recovery Network now has 200 volunteers and the program has expanded to 18 schools across the country. “I want to grow 18 chapters to a thousand chapters within five years. And once we get to the Food Recovery Nation being at every college campus in America, we want to expand to restaurants and farms.” Said Simon.
The volunteers are committed to making that happen.

27、Astronaut(宇航员)Scott Kelly has been living on the International Space Station(ISS)since March 28, 2015. And just like any other home, the ISS requires some housekeeping, in the form of regular work and repairs.
That is why Kelly and his partner Kjell Lindgren performed activities, outside the station on Wednesday. The operation began at 8:03 am and lasted for more than seven hours. It was the first spacewalk for both men.
The ISS has been in continual use for 15 years, and has hosted over 200 people, including astronauts and private tourists. During their activities, Kelly and Lindgren did basic electrical work, such as attaching new wires that will provide power to docking ports(舱门)on the station. The ports will be used when other people arrive at the ISS. Also, the two astronauts fixed a thermal(防寒的)cover on a key scientific instrument on the station to protect it from the freezing temperatures of space.
As the more senior astronaut, Kelly led the spacewalk. However, Lindgren dealt with some of the more challenging parts of the job as he has longer arms than Kelly.
During a spacewalk, the simplest work becomes a difficult task. Kelly and Lindgren spent months training and practicing for the operation. The preparation began in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab(NBL). Here astronauts are made to work in an environment similar to the one outside the space station.
Even getting the space suits ready can take days. While each suit is built to fit the astronaut perfectly who will wear it, adjustments(调整)need to be made right up to the time when the spacewalk begins. The adjustments address any change in the astronauts' bodies that have occurred as a result of being in a gravity-free environment.

29、Prague is the capital of Czech Republic (捷克共和国), and it’s in the center of Europe. Prague is a place where the eastern and western parts of Europe meet. The cultures of Eastern and Western Europe are quite different, but both of them have greatly influenced Prague. And of course, Prague has its own culture as well.
During World War Ⅱ, many European cities were highly bombed. However, Prague suffered very little damage during the war. As a result, all of its ancient buildings remain undamaged.
Old Town Square is the number one stop for tourists visiting Prague. The square is more than 800 years old; if you go there, remember that some amazing things have happened there in the past. For example, on the ground you can see 27 crosses. That’s because 400 years ago, enemy soldiers killed 27 local leaders on that spot.
Old Town Square has several very old and giant churches. The churches are huge and their old, dark style is a little bit scary. One of the ancient buildings there is the old town hall building. Inside the building there’s a 600-year-old clock. The clock has beautiful religious carvings (雕刻图案), and it still works. According to the story, the government hired a man to build the clock, and after the man was done, the government blinded him. Why? They didn’t want him to build a clock for anybody else!
Another famous part of Prague is the Jewish Quarter. In the past, Jewish people were forced to live in this area. Other parts of Prague have huge castles and churches. Those areas are beautiful, but they might not seem real to some people. In the Jewish Quarter, the streets are narrower and the buildings are smaller. It helps visitors understand how ordinary people lived hundreds of years ago. It also has a simple but very beautiful synagogue. A synagogue is a Jewish temple.
