二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The room was full of the smell of ink. It was nice, but I wondered what I was doing there. I felt butterflies in my stomach when I started calligraphy (书法) class. At that moment, I couldn’t have known that I’d just made one of the best choices of my life.

I sat down and listened to the teacher introducing the writing brush. Then it was time for me to try my hand. I took up the brush, using the correct gesture, dipped () it in the ink, and carefully wrote “one” in Chinese.

I watched the ink spread. The character I wrote wasn’t pretty at all. I lost heart. My teacher noticed my sadness and encouraged me to try as many times as possible. I dipped the brush and tried again. After I had written the word repeatedly for two hours, perhaps thousands of times, I finally made a “one” that looked neat and clear.

I walked out of the classroom with a pile of paper, seeing the sunlight fall through the spaces between the leaves to the ground, and everything seemed to shine. With the calligraphy I’d learned, I realized that I could discover the world’s beauty.

Since that time, I have been interested in calligraphy.

After nearly five years of practicing, I became quite good at it. I started to make versions of well-known poems. In the quiet room full of the smell of ink, calligraphy seemed like a bridge, which connected me to writers from centuries past. Stroke (笔画) by stroke, word by word? I touched the author’s feelings about wars, the pain of not being appreciated and difficulties in their work. I could feel their emotions — their sadness, anger and loneliness. During that time, I cherished (珍惜) my own peace and learned to appreciate my daily life.

1How did the writer feel when she started calligraphy class?

    A.Nervous. B.Excited. C.Relaxed. D.Confident.

2Which of the following can describe the writer’s experience in learning calligraphy?

    A.Seeing is believing.

    B.Time waits for no man.

    C.Practice makes perfect.

    D.Think twice before taking action.

3How did the writer learn to cherish her daily life?

A.By creating poems of her own.

    B.Through writing words from poems.

C.By reading the poems from centuries ago.

D.By learning about the writers of the poems.

  • 27、Are you worried about moving up to senior high school? Have you ever thought about how to spend your senior high school life? It is a completely new experience, but you shouldn't be frightened. Here are some tips to help you.

You are not alone. Maybe you do not notice that everybody else in your grade is just as nervous as you are. 【1】 Try to see your new school as a chance instead of a problem. Relax, and be open-minded.

【2】 Living up to senior high school means learning new rules and meeting different people. If you don't know what to do or have problems, you should ask for help. Teachers are certainly the best people to turn to because they have experience in dealing with students' problems, including helping them get used to the new environment. Also, if you cannot attend school for several days, ask your teachers about any missed work. It is your responsibility to catch up, not theirs.

Organize your time. There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You will have to deal with various projects and assignments from different subjects, so make sure you are wise in organizing your time. 【3】Try to make yourself a schedule or a plan to manage your tasks. This will help you take actions earlier and become less likely to delay.

Avoid being late. 【4】 But being late for unacceptable reasons, such as getting up late, or meeting a friend, is not allowed. Always remember that your school has ground rules with regards to the number of times you can be late. If you are a person who is late or absent too many times, your school may punish you. Additionally, you may have to spend a lot of time and effort catching up on the schoolwork missed because of your lateness.

Make sure you get enough sleep. Going to bed early makes a difference. 【5】 It is mainly because they go to bed so late and thus do not get enough sleep. Many studies show that a night of good sleep makes you more focused in class.

A.It is risky to start on your work a few days before your deadline.

B.If it is for acceptable reasons, it's understandable to be late or absent.

    C.Do not risk your future.

D.So remember that you all are in the same boat.

E.Your friends will help you solve them.

    F.The teachers will help.

G.Some students find it hard to get up early in the morning.

  • 28、   Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder who became a millionaire after founding technology companies, experienced a long line of university dropouts(退学者)as we all know, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs among them. But 12 years after leaving Harvard to work on Facebook full time, he returned to pick up his degree finally.

Zuckerberg founded what was then called “The Facebook” in his college dormitory (宿舍) in 2004. At that time, the service was at first offered only to Harvard students before bringing it to other Ivy League (常春藤联盟) universities. Zuckerberg made the university’s graduation speech later on Thursday. After receiving the honor for the degree, he posted a photo of him with his parents and Mark Zuckerberg realized his parents’dream with a Harvard degree.

During his speech on Thursday, Mr Zuckerberg told graduates that everybody lived in a changeable time. With his wife, Priscilla, in the audience (听众), he pointed to the dormitory where he founded Facebook and added that meeting her there was the best thing to happen to him at the university.

Zuckerberg returned to the room where he built Facebook along with his partners, Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum and Chris Hughes. Even after the company moved its head office to California, Zuckerberg continued to be a student at Harvard until he dropped out in November, 2005. “I’m not coming back,” he told the university paper “The Crimson”.

His honorary degree comes 12 years later, a little quicker than Bill Gates, another famous Harvard dropout, to get his. Gates, who left to found Microsoft in 1975, did not receive his honorary degree until 2007. Last week, Zuckerberg shared a video of him finding out he had been accepted into Harvard. At that time he was just a young man who was going to step into one of the best universities around the world and he didn’t know who he would be in the future at all.

【1】Who were the first users of the service of “The Facebook”?

    A.Officers in Gates’ company.

    B.Some Zuckerberg’s friends.

    C.The students in Harvard.

    D.Students in Ivy universities.

【2】What was the best thing to happen to Zuckerberg in Harvard?

A.Having the idea of founding a company.

B.Dropping out of the best university.

    C.Living in the special dormitoiy.

    D.Meeting his wife Priscilla.

【3】What can we know about Zuckerberg in the passage?

A.He was in the same class with Steve Jobs.

B.After twelve years’ leaving, he graduated from Harvard.

C.He became rich for selling some technology firms.

D.He founded Facebook after his graduation.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Zuckerberg and his late Harvard degree

B.Zuckerberg, the special teacher for life

C.Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Jobs’ influence

D.Zuckerberg and his terrible past and bright future

  • 29、Recently, we were given the opportunity to review a book written by a young author. When we received it, I noted how beautifully done it was. While often the case---we see beautifully written and illustrated books all the time---but how often do they come from a 10-year-old? Sewing a Friendship, written by a creative and talented young girl named Natalie Tinti, is such a book.

Developing friendships is an area that Natalie Tinti has researched in her own life. In her book, Sewing a Friendship, she tells what great things can happen if kids take a step toward friendship.

Tinti’s characters in Sewing a Friendship have colorful and creative personalities. Jonsy Jipsy loves singing and belly dance. Sokron Blossom lives in a neat and tidy world and loves to read fashion magazines. Meeka likes brain games and Nina is happy with her life and the music it brings her.

All but one of the characters seems happy with their lives. One of the girls, Kiki Shaver, was sad to live in a small home with her aunt and uncle. She had no friend and didn’t know how to make them. When four girls invites her into the circle of their friendship, it’s no wonder that Kiki is hesitant and uneasy.

The story continues as the four girls invite and accept a not so likeable” girl into their circle to win a fashion show. The girls feel a strong bond of friendship after the show. Kiki then understands that taking a step towards friendship is better than being alone. All the girls learn that by having the courage to include others, you can sew a friendship”.

Today, it seems that almost every news headline begins with a child’s suicide---or murder---because of being bullied(欺侮),not having friends or family to discuss issues with and feelings of low self –respect. What’s causing these senseless terrible events? If more kids would invite the outcasts(被驱逐者) into their circle of friends, lives would be saved as well as pointed in another direction.

Natalie Tinti finds her voice in Sewing a Friendship ---and shows a talent that’s rare for such a young girl. Recommended reading for all young adult fans.
