26、Scientists claim to have developed a revolutionary new giant 3D concrete printer that can build a 2,500-square-foot house in just 24 hours.
The 3D printer, developed by Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis from the University of Southern California, could be used to build a whole house, layer by layer, in a single day.
"It is basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building," said Khoshnevis.
The giant robot replaces construction workers with a nozzle (喷嘴), which can quickly build a home based on a computer pattern, MSN News reported.
Contour Crafting, as it is named, is a layered fabrication (构造) technology. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be constructed in a single run, embedded (嵌入) in each house all the wires and pipes for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.
The potential applications of this technology are far-reaching including in emergency, low-income, and commercial housing.
"Our research also addresses the application of Contour Crafting in building habitats on other planets. Contour Crafting will most probably be one of the very few feasible approaches for building structures on other planets, such as the Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human habitation before the end of the new century," researchers said on the project website.
The technology may potentially reduce energy use and emissions. And the main advantages of the Contour Crafting process over existing technologies are the superior surface finish that is realized and the greatly increased speed of construction.

27、It is reported that two thirds of our earth’s oceans and three quarters of its land have been damaged by mankind. One million types of plants and animals could disappear by 2050, with a speed hundreds of times faster than over the last 10 million years. One fifth of all nations could see the environment on which we ourselves depend is being destroyed.
Our earth can only continue to support us if we protect its biodiversity (生物多样性). It is the biological chain of plants and animals that hold our world together. Every life form, however tiny, is of great importance to the whole. Every breath of air we breathe and every mouthful of food that we take comes from the natural world. And if we damage the natural world, we damage ourselves. Indeed, the environment we live in is not only vital to our survival, but also powering the world economy. The costs produced by our broken relationship with nature are rising every day.
The continuing destruction of the environment also quickens climate change and makes us feel weaker and even more vulnerable. The environment supports us, but climate change in turn harms the environment at the same time, making these two challenges two sides of the same coin. To make matters worse, damage to our ecosystems (生态系统) also has a bad effect on human health, by ruining our sources of food, medicine, water and oxygen. We even risk new diseases jumping from animals to humans.
From October 11-15, 2021, world leaders gathered online for part one of COP-15 (第十五届缔约方会议), with the second part in face-to-face meetings in Kunming, from April 25 to May 8, 2022. This is an extremely important moment to raise the level of ambition and commitments for nature.
Saving biodiversity is to save ourselves. What is needed most is a global plan to protect biodiversity, with new goals for the next decade that all countries support and provide money for the project.

28、 There’s a lot we know about eggs: they are great for breakfast and you can cook them in different ways. One topic of debate, however, is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones. According to Shaman Hickman, the director of Community Outreach and Education for Hickman's Family Farms, genetics (基因学) not nutrition determines the eggshell colour and thus the egg’s price.
The chicken breed (品种) and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment (色素) genes, which coat the egg and result in a coloured shell during the egg-laying process. Although all eggs start out white in colour, shell colour can range from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds, Hickman adds. Breeds such as the Leghorn chicken lay white eggs, while the Orpington lays brown eggs and the Ameraucana produces blue eggs.
Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers. Hens that produce coloured eggshells, however, tend to be larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted layer. Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.
Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently, it’s impossible to know their nutritional make-up from the shell colour alone, according to Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” she says. “But it's important for people to know that the colour of the eggshell has nothing to do with the egg’s nutrient content or shell thickness.”
What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on, according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients. No matter what your preference is, don’t judge an egg by its shell colour.
【1】Which of the following is one of the arguments about eggs in Paragraph One?
A.Why Brown eggs are much cheaper.
B.How eggs can be cooked healthily.
C.Why coloured eggs are more expensive.
D.Whether brown eggs are great for breakfast.
【2】What makes the eggshell colour different?
A.The size of the hen.
B.The hen’s breed.
C.The colour of the eggs inside.
D.The environment of the laying process.
【3】Why do farmers love the Leghorn breed more?
A.They are productive.
B.Their eggs are larger.
C.They lay brown eggs.
D.Their eggs sell better.
【4】What can we learn from Malkani's words in the last paragraph?
A.It takes efforts to test eggs’ nutrition.
B.It’s meaningless to study an egg’s colour.
C.Personal preference matters a lot in choice-making.
D.An egg's nutrition is closely related to the hen’s feed.
29、A French power producer, HDF Energy, expects its hydrogen energy power station in Namibia to produce electricity by 2024. And HDF Energy announced the plan for the southern African country publicly recently. This plant in Namibia would be Africa’s first. HDF Energy is also considering new projects across Africa.
The project is expected to cost about $181 million. Once operated, it will supply electrical power, 24 hours a day throughout the year. It will increase the electricity supply to Namibia, which imports 40 percent of power from neighboring South Africa. Namibia is one of the world’s sunniest and least densely-populated countries. It wants to use its great potential for solar and wind energy to produce green hydrogen power. And Namibia wants to become a renewable energy center in Africa.
Hydrogen power is considered clean when it is made with reproducible power. It is seen as an important way to reduce carbon-based fuels in the energy industry. The project will use solar panels(电池板)to produce electricity. Electrolyzers produce hydrogen which can be easily stored by using electricity to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water.
Another company named Hyphen Hydrogen Energy is in talks with Namibia’s government to secure an agreement for a planned hydrogen project. European Union says they also plan a deal with the country to support its green hydrogen industry. The German government has already agreed to invest $41.8 million in Namibia’s hydrogen plan. European nations are trying to reduce their dependence on Russian energy. Obeth Kandjoze, director-general of Namibia’s National Planning Commission said EU financial support was likely to be limited, but a financial deal could bring in other investors.
【1】What do we know about Namibia according to the text?
A.It has the longest sunny days in the world.
B.It is the renewable energy center of Africa.
C.It owns Africa’s first hydrogen energy power station.
D.Its power supply highly depends on neighbouring countries.
【2】Which word could be the best to describe the hydrogen energy?
A.Environmental-friendly.
B.Harmful.
C.Widely-applied.
D.Low-cost.
【3】Why do European countries support Namibia’s hydrogen industry?

31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box… Each word can only be used once. Do note that there is one word more than you need.
What’s the point of reading if we all forget what we read sooner or later? Being a liberal arts (文科) teacher, more often than not, I will find myself confronted with this sort of question. And knowing that I am not in a good position to 【1】 this question which can be simple and hard at the same time, I always quote what William Johnson Cory has written in a letter in which he articulates (清晰表达) the purpose of education. From my perspective, his words can also be taken as a 【2】 argument for reading. The full quotation goes:
“At school you are 【3】 not so much in acquiring knowledge as in making mental efforts under criticism. A certain amount of knowledge you can indeed with average faculties acquire so as to retain; nor need you 【4】 the hours you spent on much that is forgotten, for the 【5】 of lost knowledge at least protects you from many illusions. But you go to a great school not so much for knowledge as for arts and habits: for the habit of attention, for the art of entering 【6】 into another person’s thoughts, for the habit of submitting to censure (批判) and refutation (反驳), for the art if indicating assent (附议) or dissent (异议) in gradated terms, for the habit of regarding minute points of accuracy, for the art of working out what is possible in a given time, for taste, for discrimination, for mental courage, and for mental soberness (清醒).”
Besides, even though we eventually forget most of what we read, there can still be 【7】 in the moments of reading a particular book in a particular place. What I remember most about Hemingway’s short-story 【8】 Men Without Women is the persistent cough I had due to a heavy cold, which at that time did give me a strong feeling that I would also like to die for my beloved.
So the purpose of reading is not to memorize 【9】 everything we read but to keep reading. After all, if there are no 【10】 opinions on the idea that we are what we eat then we are also what we read.
