26、Is science actually "right"?
The Covid crisis has led many scientists to take up arms (or at least keyboards) to defend their enterprise -- and to be sure, science needs defenders these days. But in their zeal to fight back against vaccine rejection and other forms of science denial, some scientists say things that just aren't true -- and you can't build trust if the things you are saying are not trustworthy.
One popular move is to insist that science is right -- full stop -- and that once we discover the truth about the world, that's it. We are done. Anyone who denies such truths (they suggest) is stupid or ignorant. Or, as Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg said, "Even though a scientific theory is in a sense a social consensus, it is unlike any other sort of consensus in that it is culture-free and permanent." Well, no. Even a modest familiarity with the history of science offers many examples of matters that scientists thought they had resolved, only to discover that they needed to be reconsidered. Some familiar examples are Earth as the center of the universe, the absolute nature of time and space, the stability of continents, and the cause of infectious disease.
Science is a process of learning and discovery, and sometimes we learn that what we thought was right is actually wrong. Science can also be understood as an institution (or better, a set of institutions) that facilitates this work. To say that science is "true" or "permanent" is like saying that "marriage is permanent." At best, it's a bit off-key. Marriage today is adapted to a world that is very different from what it was in the 16th or 18th century, and so are most of our "laws" of nature. They are at best, true for now or true until proven otherwise.
Another popular move is to say scientific findings are true because scientists use "the scientific method." But we can never actually agree on what that method is. Some will say it is empiricism: observation and description of the world. Others will say it is the experimental method: the use of experience and experiment to test hypotheses. This is cast sometimes as the hypothetic-deductive method, in which the experiment must be framed as a deduction from theory, and sometimes as falsification, where the point of observation and experiment is to prove these theories false, not to confirm them. Recently, a prominent scientist claimed the scientific method was to avoid fooling oneself into thinking that something is true when it is not, and vice versa.
In my view, the biggest mistake scientists make is to claim that this is all somehow simple and therefore to imply that anyone who doesn't get it is dumb. Yet science is not simple, and neither is the natural world; therein lies the greatest challenge of science communication. What we do is both hard and, often, hard to explain. Our efforts to understand and characterize the natural world are just that: efforts. Because we're human, we often fall flat. The good news is that when that happens, we pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, and get back to work. That's no different from professional skiers who wipe out in major races or inventors whose early aspirations go bust. Understanding the beautiful, complex world we live in, and using that knowledge to do useful things, is its own reward and why taxpayers should be happy to fund research.
Scientific theories are not perfect replicas of reality, but we have good reason to believe that they capture significant elements of it. And experience reminds us that when we ignore reality, it sooner or later comes back to bite us.
【1】What can we learn from paragraphs 1 & 2?

D.None of the above.
【4】The author intends to tell us ________.
A.once some scientific truths are settled, there is no need to change them
B.scientific findings are not permanent so that we should be ready for the changes
C.if we can use different scientific methods, we can reach more scientific findings

28、Easy reading is hard writing
In an interview with The Daily Beast Last year, Maya Angelou, an American author and poet, discussed her writing career and her daily work habits.
I keep a hotel room in my hometown and pay for it by the month. I go around 6:30 in the morning. I have a bedroom, with a bed, a table, and a bath. I have Roget's Thesaurus =, which is a dictionary, and the Bible. Usually, a deck of cards and some crossword puzzles. Something to occupy my “little mind”. I think my grandmother taught me that. She didn't mean to, but she used to talk about her “little mind” . So when I was young, from the time I was about 3 until 13, I decided that there was a “big mind”and a “little mind”. And the “big mind”would allow you to consider deep thoughts, but the “little mind” would occupy you, so you could not be distracted. It would work at crossword puzzles or play cards, while the “big mind” would delve(探究) deep into the subjects I wanted to write about.
I have all the paintings and any decoration taken out of the room. I ask the management and housekeeping not to enter the room, just in case I've thrown a piece of paper on the floor. I don’t want it discarded(丢弃). About every two months I get a note slipped under the door. “Dear Ms. Angelou, please let us change the bed sheet. We think it may be moldy(发霉的)!”
But I've never slept there. I am usually out of there by 2. And then I go home and I read what I've written that morning, and I tried to edit them.
Easy reading is hard writing. But if it's right, it's easy. It's the other way round, too. If it's carelessly written, then it's hard to read. It doesn't give the reader what the careful writer can give the reader.
【1】What usually occupies Maya Angelou's “little mind”?
A.The Bible.
B.Her dictionary.
C.Her hotel room.
D.Crossword puzzles.
【2】Why does Maya Angelou not allow the housekeeping into her room?
A.She thinks that they will ask for something from her.
B.She fears that they may clear up her writing.
C.Her grandmother can help her with the cleaning.
D.She doesn't sleep there and no cleaning is needed.
【3】How does Maya Angelou like easy writing?
A.It is fun to read.
B.It is easy to read.
C.It is hard to read.
D.It is no use reading.
【4】Where does Maya Angelou edit her writing?
A.At home.
B.In the hotel.
C.At a library.
D.In her grandmother's house.
29、There are some problem areas for international students and immigrants’ studying in the United States. Making friends is a challenge (this is also true for some American students). Many college and universities offer a variety of student clubs and organizations where both foreign-born and native American students have a greater chance of meeting people with shared interests. Information about these out-of-class activities is often posted in the student center and listed in the student newspaper. Sometimes foreign students and immigrant students find Americans to be “cliquish (有派性的)”. Americans find some non-U.S.-born students to be cliquish as well. If people feel separated from the social aspects of American college life, they should actively seek people with shared interests. It is unlikely that students will make friends just by passing people on the campus.
Foreign or immigrant students may feel confused during the first few weeks at a new school because they do not understand the system and are not willing to ask questions. Many students do not take advantage of the numerous services offered on campus that assist students in developing new skills and social groups. Some colleges offer students tutorial (辅导的) support in such subjects as writing, language study, computer skills, and other basic subjects. Students who appear to be most successful in "learning the ropes" are those who can solve problems by taking the initiative to ask questions, locate resources, and experience new social situations.
【1】In the United States, students can find friends with the same interests by______
A.passing people on the campus
B.reading the student newspaper
C.joining the student clubs
D.visiting the student center
【2】The sentence “people feel separated from the social aspects of American college life” (Line 7,Para. l) means they have difficulty in______.
A.communicating with others on the campus
B.being easily accepted by the university
C.finding people with shared interests
D.getting a job in American society
【3】When they first come to college, some foreign students may feel confused because______.
A.they are denied any help from people around
B.they are provided with few services
C.they are faced with an unfamiliar educational system
D.they are unwilling to adapt themselves to the new environment
【4】The phrase “learning the ropes” (Line 6, Para. 2) is closest in meaning to ______
A.finding the way to develop new skills
B.having the skills to make conversations
C.learning how to answer questions
D.knowing how to handle problems
【5】From the passage we may conclude that foreign students______.
A.are unlikely to be successful in American college life
B.may face some problems in adjusting to American college life

30、We suppose it makes sense that, after humans, connected dogs are the next big thing. Link AKC, backed by the American Kennel Club (hence the AKC), has just announced a smart collar _______to give dog owners more information about their pet’s well-being.
The collar does a few different things, from tracking your dogs’ location to _______ its comfort. The collar’s built-in GPS means you’ll be able to keep an eye on your pup’s _______ at all time, and, when paired with the base station, even set up a “_______ fence” that will alert you if the dog starts wandering astray (迷路). There’s also a handy remote-controlled light _______ you need to go out in the dark in search of your dog companion.
Like any wearable worth its salt (名副其实), the collar also _______ as an activity tracker. The Link AKC collar will let owners track their dogs’ activity levels and see whether it’s getting the right amount of exercise each day, taking into _______ its breed, age and size.
One of the best features, we think, is the temperature sensor that will _______ you if your dog is in an environment that’s too hot or cold. Considering the number of foolish people who still leave dogs in hot cars _______ all common sense and endless public service announcements (seriously, just don’t do it, yeah), this could ________ save some lives.
Finally, the collar has a ________ called “Adventures” that will let you create a “scrapbook” of memories with your dog by pushing a button, which you can then ________ on social media. We assume this will be more like a Facebook check-in with a photo, and that it won’t be uploading a montage of you and your dog playing in the forest to Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”— but we secretly hope for the latter.
A lot of ________ is being put on how the collar looks too, and we can see why; somehow the market for wearable dog tech has already nailed fashion better than the human one.
The collar will cost $199, however you’ll also need to ________ up for a monthly membership in order to use the device, and plans start at $6.95 with a two-year commitment. We assume that might put some people off.
The collar will be shipping by December 28, the company says, however right now it can only be ordered to the US. You can ________ one today from the website, and we’ll let you know if we get word on UK pricing and availability.
