二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It was 7:00 am in Kyoto, Japan, and the taxi company had just called a second time to say they couldn’t find my house. Once again I spelt out directions even a blind person could follow. I glanced impatiently at my watch, and waited. Only two hours remained until my flight left—and it was an hour and a half trip to the airport.

Outside, heavy rains were pouring down. My house was so far north in the city that buses pass only here times a day.

The telephone rang again. “Terribly sorry,” began the man at the taxi company. Then I realized that the taxi company, flooded with calls, could only offer in-city runs. I had heard this happens when the weather gets bad. I shouted into the phone that I had a plane to catch and I would meet the taxi outside my house.

Standing in the wind-driven rain, I looked up and down the road. No taxi. A car went by, the driver and passenger staring at the crazy foreigner in the downpour.

Finally a white car appeared and pulled to a stop. A young man threw open the door, waving for me to get in. Shaking with cold and anger, I climbed in.

In the most polite Japanese, the man said he was called Mike, with who I had spoken three times that morning. He had left his post in the office and raced here in his personal car. He apologized again, but didn’t explain why a taxi would not pick me up. Delivering me straight to the airport, he refused the 2,000 yen I pressed into his hand.

A few hours later, as the storm-delayed 727 took off, I opened the newspaper. On the second page my eyes caught the headline of a short article: Taxi Strike Begins This Morning in Kyoto.

【1】Why did the writer call a taxi early in the morning?

    A. He wanted to catch a plane.

    B. He as unable to find the airport.

    C. There were few taxis in town.

    D. All the buses stopped because of the rain.

【2】What was the reason for the taxi company not being able to pick him up?

    A. More people were riding in taxis on rainy days.

    B. The writer didn’t give the correct address.

    C. The taxi drivers refused to work.

    D. The taxi drivers didn’t like to drive long distance.

【3】The writer got to the airport ____________.

    A. by riding in Mike’s car from the taxi company

    B. with the help of Mike from the post office

    C. by getting a lift in a passing car

    D. with the help of a taxi driver sent by his company

【4We can learn from the text that the driver was _____________.

    A. quick-minded at taking action

    B. a self-employed driver

    C. unwilling to drive to the airport

    D. warm-hearted toward people

  • 27、   Should parents send their freshmen off to campus armed with a debt or credit card to learn how to handle money? Or is it better to keep firm control through the Bank of Mom and Dad? The "correct" answer will vary by family and personal preference.

The Credit Card Act that took effect 2.5 years ago made it much harder for anyone under 21 to get a card. Gone are the days of card issuers collecting plenty of new customers on campus by handing out free T-shirts or rewards points for spring break.

Under-21s can still obtain a credit card if they have a qualified co-signer or proof of sufficient income to repay the debt. And card issuers still market aggressively to college students, targeting them with pre-screened mail offers. That makes parents, as the likeliest co-signers, more involved in the card-or-no-card decision.

Robyn Kahn Federman of Rochester, N.Y., says there’s “no way” she’ll let either of her two daughters have a credit card at such a financially tender age. Her daughter Sarah, who’s 19 and about to start her second year of college, uses Robyn’s PayPal card instead. That lets her mom fund the balance and see how she spends her money.

“I don’t think anything related to debt belongs in the hands of a college kid,” says Federman, communications director of a marketing agency. “The vast majority are not experienced enough with money or aware enough of the risks.”

Some students, though, have shown they’re disciplined enough to have their own card on campus.

Scott Gamm, 20, a junior at New York University's Stern School of Business, used his income from freelance work and blogging to obtain a Visa card and then an American Express card. He charges $200 to $300 on them monthly and pays every bill in full.

But he has friends who obtained three or four cards within a year and now have big debts.

“The more credit you have access to, especially at that young age, the higher the probability you’ll use that card to finance fancy clothes, restaurants and entertainment.” says Gamm.

1According to the passage, which of the following statement is true?

A.People hold different opinions about their kids using credit cards.

B.Credit cards are useful in helping deal with money matters.

C.It is better to have Mom and Dad who now run a bank.

D.The new Act made it impossible to get a credit card for freshmen.

2To obtain a credit card, an under-21 has to _____.

A.own a credit card of his own previously

B.have someone to repay the possible debt

C.turn to their parents to get their permission

D.ask their parents to write the application letter

3We may infer from the case of Sarah that PayPal card ____.

A.is a kind of credit card B.funds the balance automatically

C.has access to credit D.keeps records of money spent

4What is the passage mainly about?

A.The Credit Card Act B.Students and credit cards

C.Card issuers and students D.Parents and choice of cards

  • 28、   I still can’t remember if I said goodbye to him.

That special day, I remember it so well. I got up as usual in the morning. Our dog, Gansett, was more than happy to give kisses. Giving him a pat, I pushed him aside, needing to get ready to go to school. As I stepped into the kitchen, Mom greeted me with a smile and I responded the same way. Quickly, I finished up my breakfast and then got ready fast with my school stuff. I dashed out of the door with Mom following, and after telling Gansett to stay inside, she gave up and let him come along. As we walked to the car, Mom opened the trunk for him to jump in, which he did with a huge grin on his furry face. I jumped in and shut my door, pulling my seatbelt across my body. We pulled out of the driveway, and fifteen minutes later, we were at the school. I jumped out of the car and ran inside, not even looking back.

Dad picked me up at the end of the day, and I knew almost immediately that something was wrong. He didn’t stay and chat with people like he had before, just telling me to get into the car. I was getting terrified. He sat me down, and with great gentleness told me that Gansett had died. I laughed in his face when he said that, because Gansett had been perfectly fine that morning.

Dad just kept staring at me, with an I-can’t-believe-it-happened-either look in his eyes. I realized that he wasn’t joking. I burst into tears, and cried for the rest of the day. I was later able to say goodbye to Gansett’s body, but not the three-year-old dog that I loved with all my heart.

I wish I could remember if I said goodbye to him that morning, but I can’t, and not knowing that will be always bothering me.

【1】What can we learn about Gansett from Paragraph 2?

A.He was very close to the author.

B.He woke up the author every morning.

C.He was unwilling to go to school with the author.

D.He failed to get on well with the author’s mother.

【2】How did the author first feel when told about Gansett’s death?

    A.It was sorrowful.

    B.It was frightening.

    C.It was hard to believe.

D.It came as a great shock.

【3】What does the author really want to express in the passage?

A.His deep love for his dog.

B.His strong wish for another dog.

C.His regret about not saying goodbye.

D.His pride in having Gansett as his pet.

  • 29、The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote expanse of land behind his ranch in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the US-Mexico border, when he spotted a balloon on the grass. Heiss walked towards and that’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper.

Heiss flipped the paper over. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn’t very good, but I could see it was a Christmas list,” he said. Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a little child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent aloft, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.

It would be difficult, but he had a few clues. About 32 kilometres to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that it was probably a girl who had asked for a doll and dollhouse.

Heiss then posted on Facebook about his quest, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no leads; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales. The Radio XENY host Cesar Barron talked on the air about the quest to find the girl and posted about it on the station’s Facebook page.

The next morning, Heiss awoke to another message from Radio XENY. They had located the eight-year-old girl, Dayami, and her family. Heiss went shopping with his wife. They bought just about everything on Dayami’s list except for the dollhouse (it was sold out). Then the Heisses arrived at the Radio XENY offices with presents by the armload – and finally met the very excited little girl.

“Her eyes were wide open with wonder,” Heiss said of the girl’s reaction. “We now have friends for life,” Heiss said. “And, for a day, that border fence with its concertina wire melted away.”

【1】Which of the following is not correct according to the passage?

A.The balloon was spotted near the US-Mexico border.

B.On the balloon was a numbered list in French.

C.When Heiss was a kid he did the same thing as the little girl did.

D.He had a few clues on how to find the girl.

【2】Why did Heiss feel worried when his Facebook quest was in vain?

A.His wife can’t wait to go shopping.

B.A private Facebook message to Radio XENY was difficult to send.

C.Considerable time and effort were needed to melt away the border fence.

D.He was afraid to fail to present the girl with what she wanted in time.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Heiss?

    A.Funny and honest

    B.Brave and Persistent

    C.Determined and caring

    D.Outgoing and experienced

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Heiss’ Christmas Experience

    B.Dayami’s Christmas Adventure

    C.Border Fence Melting Away

D.A Christmas Wish List Attached To A Balloon
