二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Three boys and three girls boarded a bus to Lauderdale, Florida, dreaming of golden beaches. When the bus passed through New Jersey, they began to notice Vingo, who sat in front of them, dressed in a plain, ill-fitting suit.

Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson Restaurant, and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder: perhaps he was a sea captain, a runaway from his wife, an old soldier going home.

Shortly after a snack, they went back to the bus and one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.

After a while, slowly and painfully, he told his story. He had been in prison in New York for the past four years. Last week he was released from imprisonment and now going home.

“When in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said. “I told her that I was going to be away a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, she could just forget me; I’d understand. We used to live in Brunswick, and there’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. Last week, I wrote her again. I told her that if she’d take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come home. If she didn’t want me, forget it and I’d go on through.”

She told the others, and soon all of them were in it, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. Then, suddenly, all of the young people were up out of their seats, screaming and crying, doing small dances of joy. The oak tree was covered with yellow handkerchiefs, 20 of them, 30 of them, maybe hundreds, a tree that stood like small flags of welcome flying in the wind. As the young people shouted, Vingo rose and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

1What attracted the six young people when their bus passed through New Jersey?

    A. The Howard Johnson Restaurant.

    B. A silent man.

    C. Golden beaches.

    D. A well-dressed man

2The young people on the bus try to imagine Vingo may be a person EXCEPT_________.

    A. a sea captain

    B. an old soldier going home

    C. an old soldier going home

    D. a prisoner escaping from prison

3Vingo wrote a letter to his wife again last week to ________.

    A. ask for her forgiveness

    B. beg her to allow him back home

    C. tie a yellow handkerchief to the oak tree

    D. make sure if she was still in love with him

4Why did all the young people shout with joy when they arrived in Brunswick?

    A. They were approaching their destination.

    B. They were surprised to see so many welcoming people.

    C. They were sure that Vingo’s wife was expecting him home.

    D. The oak tree was still standing there welcoming Vingo back home.

5】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A. Going home

    B. Vingo and his wife

    C. Yellow handkerchiefs

    D. The relationship between Vingo and the young people

  • 22、A China plane struck a bird after taking off in Chengdu, Sichuan, and had to immediately return to the airport last October, and it wasn’t the first accident between an aircraft and a bird last year.

In fact, more than 20,000 wildlife strikes with aircraft were reported worldwide in 2023 — the vast majority of those animals being birds. The strikes can also include run-ins with bats or creatures on the ground, such as deer or turtles. Expanding wildlife populations, increases in number of aircraft movements, and a trend toward faster and quieter aircraft all have contributed to the increase in wildlife strikes.

Bird strikes are a hazard not just to commercial airplanes, but to all sorts of aircraft. However, historical data shows that damage is reported in a small percentage of incidents. Last year, 95% of the global strikes involved some kind of damage — and only 5% of those caused “substantial” damage.

Some of the most disturbing types of strikes can happen when one or more birds go into a plane’s engine, which might cause a lot of damage to the aircraft. The pilot would need to return to the airport or find a safe place to land.

In last October’s China plane incident, the Beijing-bound flight was able to land normally in Chengdu after taking into account what the airline described as security concerns. Senior captain Chen Jianguo said pilots are trained on how to respond if they have a bird strike in flight. The pilot in this case did exactly what he was trained to do.

“There are lots of things that are being used by airports to try to manage the habitat and birds around the airport,” said Chen Jianguo. Airports need to manage bird habitats to reduce or get rid of trees and plants that shelter birds, or address wetlands that can attract birds. Collecting data on what kinds of birds are involved in strikes is equally important so the risks can better be managed. Many airports also use audible signals to scare birds away, such as the sounds of fireworks.

【1】What is a cause of the increase in wildlife strikes?

    A.The poorly designed aircraft.

    B.The growing number of birds.

    C.The destruction of wildlife habitats.

    D.The absence of environmental awareness.

【2】What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Danger.

    B.Delay.

    C.Accident.

    D.Reminder.

【3】What does the historical data tell us about bird strikes?

    A.They are a rare occurrence.

    B.They usually damage engines.

C.Most of them cause slight damage.

D.Most of them involve one single bird.

【4】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

    A.Ways to study bird behavior.

    B.Measures to drive birds away.

    C.Efforts to restore bird habitat.

D.Attempts to take care of birds.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 to two women scientists, Charpentier and Doudna, “for the development of a method for gene editing."

The discovery of these genetic scissors was unexpected.During Charpentier' s studies of Streptococcus pyogenes, one of the bacteria that cause the most harm to humans, she discovered a previously unknown molecule(分子),tracrRNA. Her work showed that tracrRNA is part of bacteria's ancient immune system, CRISPR/Cas. Charpentier published her discovery in Nature in 2011 and described how tracrRNA works with the Cas9 protein(蛋白质)to follow and kill viruses by cutting up their DNA.

Then in that same year,Charpentier began to cooperate with Doudna, an experienced biochemist in RNA.Together, they succeeded in recreating the bacteria's genetic scissors in a test tube and simplifying the scissors' molecular components so they were easier to use. They then reprogrammed the genetic scissors. In their natural form, the scissors recognize DNA from viruses, but Charpentier and Doudna proved that they could be controlled so that they can cut any DNA molecule at a predetermined site. Where the DNA is cut, it is then easy to rewrite the code of life.

Since the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors were discovered in 2012, their use has exploded though there are concerns that the technology could be misused. This tool has contributed to many important discoveries in basic research, and plant researchers have been able to develop crops that withstand mould, pests and drought. In medicine, clinical trials of new cancer therapies are underway, and the dream of being able to cure inherited diseases is about to come true.

1According to Charpentier's studies of Streptococcus pyogenes, tracrRNA_____

    A.can change life's DNA precisely

B.causes the most harm to human beings

C.is a previously unknown immune system

D.works with Cas9 protein to split viruses' DNA

2Which order shows the discovery of the genetic scissors?

    a. Charpentier began to cooperate with Doudna.

    b. Charpentier published her discovery in 2011.

    c.Charpentier studied Streptococcus pyogenes.

    d. The bacteria's genetic scissors were recreated.

e.The genetic scissors were then reprogrammed

    A.a-b-d-c-e

    B.c-a-b-e-d

    C.a-d-e-c-b

    D.c-b-a-d-e

3What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Concerns about the misuse of genetic scissors.

B.The widely-spread use of the genetic scissors.

C.The important discoveries in basic research.

D.Contributions to cure for inherited diseases.

4Which  of he following is the best title for the text?

A.Cooperation:Secret to Success in Scientific Researches

B.Genetic Scissors:a Tool for Rewriting the Code of Life

    C.Charpentier & Doudna:Women Scientists Acknowledged

D.The Nobel Prize in Chemistry: a Promoter of Gene Editing

  • 24、Exercise can change how crucial portions of our brain communicate as we age, improving aspects of thinking and remembering, according to a new study of aging brains and workouts.

Experiments show exercise increases neurons of the brain essential for memory creation and storage, while also improving thinking skills. In older people, regular physical activity helps slow the usual loss of brain volume, which may help to prevent age-related memory loss and possibly lower the risk of dementia.

In a 2016 M. R. I. study, research about student runners suggested that running and fitness might have contributed to sharper minds. But little was known about whether and how exercise might change the communication systems of older brains.

So, for the new study, Mark Gluck, a professor in Newark, New Jersey, and his colleagues decided to see what happened inside the brains of older people if they began to work out. In particular, he wondered about their memory center. Unfortunately, its inner workings often begin to decline in thinking and memory. But Dr. Gluck suspected that exercise might change that.

Luckily, he and his colleagues previously had recruited older African-Americans from the area. The volunteers, most in their 60s, visited Dr. Gluck’s lab for physical checks. They agreed to have their brain activity scanned.

Some then started working out, while others chose to be a sedentary control group. All shared similar fitness and memory function at the start. The exercise group attended hour-long dance classes twice a week at a community center for 20 weeks. Then the scientists noticed subtle differences in how the exercisers’ brains operated, indicating a kind of youthful flexibility in the brain, in a way that the sedentary group’s brains couldn’t.

This study involved older African-Americans, though, a group that may not be representative of all aging people. Still, it seems that neural flexibility gained by exercising a few times a week “leads directly to memory flexibility,” Dr. Gluck says.

【1】What remained unknown in the 2016 study?

A.How the function of our mind declined at old age.

B.Whether exercise could affect the brain of old people.

C.Whether regular workout could cure age-related diseases.

D.How young people sharpened their minds through exercise.

【2】What was the advantage of Mark Gluck when doing the research?

A.He had recruited some old people for regular check.

B.He always worked out with some local old patients.

C.He was well known in the area for his medical skills.

D.He got financial support from the state for his research.

【3】What’s the finding of the workout group in Dr. Gluck’s research?

A.They had frequently checked into hospital.

B.Their brains were as active as the other group.

C.They showed a youthful flexibility at thinking.

D.Their brains showed a normal aging tendency.

【4】What does Dr. Gluck assume about the study?

A.It is perfect without including other age groups.

B.Older African-Americans benefit most from exercise.

C.Sedentary people will suffer old-aged memory loss early.

    D.Exercising a few times a week improves old-aged memory.
