  • 22、What would it take to get you to put down your phone during a meal? Sarah’s Corner Cafe in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, is offering a deal for people who want to enjoy a meal, and each other, unplugged. They’ve set up so-called “family recharging stations” at tables where you drop your phone into a basket.

“They let the server know and the server will bring over a basket with old fashioned Hangman and Tic Tac Toe and pencils because those games are interactive instead of coloring, which is solitary (孤单的),” owner Barry Lynch told ABC News. Once a family joins in the challenge, staff bring games to the table to encourage the family to interact and communicate with one another.

If families make it through the meal without looking at their phones, they’re rewarded 10 percent off their bill. “A lot of people are starting to do it and it’s taken on a life of its own,” said Lynch.

The idea for the “family recharging time” came to Lynch after observing many of his customers. “There’s one particular family I knew used to come in on Sunday for breakfast after church,” he recalled. “Every time I went over, one or two of the kids and sometimes the parents would be on the phone. I also knew the dad would go to New York for work every day, which takes a lot of time. I asked him about that and he said, ‘Yeah, I still do it. It’s so nice to be together and these breakfasts are rare.’ And when he said that, I thought, ‘Something is going on here. I need to do something.’”

Lynch is thrilled by the response his phone-free meals have gotten and hopes they continue to enrich his customers’ family time. “I just thought it was such a shame not to have more time together just to talk,” he said.

    1How can a family get a 10% discount at Sarah’s Corner Cafe?

    A. They have phone-free meals.   B. They take no phones for meals.

    C. They keep polite during the meals.   D. They remain quiet during the meals.

2Why do servers bring over the games to the challengers?

    A. To cater for them.   B. To test their courage.

    C. To make them communicate.   D. To develop their game skills.

3What did Barry show by telling the family’s story?

    A. Why he had pity on the family.

    B. How the family spent their weekend.

    C. Why the family members ignored each other.

    D. How he had the idea for family recharging time.

4What’s the reaction of the customers about their phone-free meals?

    A. Passive.   B. Positive.

    C. Casual.   D. Doubtful.

  • 23、Are you a movie-goer? If, like me, you’ re a fan of film, then there’s no better place to watch something than on the big screen at the cinema. You enter the dark auditorium and take your seat, ready to be entertained. But while you enjoy yourself in some movie magic, many others are now getting their film fix at home.

Over the last few years, cinemas have seen a revival. Customers have been attracted by comfortable seats, and lots of choices of things to watch. Multiplexes in particular can screen up to twenty films at the same time, catering for all different tastes. In addition, 3D and even 4D movies can give the audience an extra immersive experience.

So, why are people reluctant to make a trip to the cinema? One answer to that question is its lack of convenience. Rather than going out, it’s so much easier to stay in and watch an action movie on a high-definition TV screen via a streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. There’s plenty of choice, and it’s relatively cheap as well. But, personally, I find there are too many distractions, and watching at home is not such an event. I miss the trailers too!

But the corona-virus pandemic has put the future of cinemas under the spotlight. Some have had to close because of reduced ticket sales. And in the UK,it’s brought about a boom in TV watching and online streaming, according to media watchdog, Of com. It also found that half of UK adults will keep and continue using their new streaming subscriptions.

This isn’t great news for cinemas. The rely on the release of a big blockbuster to bring the crowds back, but the launch of new films, such as James Bond: No Time To Die, are being delayed. And Disney has released its $200m blockbuster, Mulan, online instead of in movie theatres. But John Fithian, from the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Variety magazine: “This idea of waiting out the pandemic to make your movies more profitable doesn’t make sense to me. There won’t be as much of an industry left to play your movies in if you do that. ”

【1】Why does the author ask such a question in the first paragraph?

A.To show the challenge cinemas are facing

B.To describe how popular movies are

    C.To share some personal preference

D.To introduce the topic of the passage

【2】What service have cinemas rarely provided to the consumers over the past few years?

    A.Some cozy seats to enjoy

    B.Multiple optional movies to watch

    C.An extra immersive experience

    D.Much convenience and low cost.

【3】What may not be a barrier for the development of cinemas according to the passage?

A.The release of some blockbusters is put off or shown on line.

B.The corona-virus pandemic has led to less ticket sales even some cinemas’ bankrupt.

C.Multiplexes can screen up to films of different styles at the same time.

D.TV watching and online streaming are gaining more popularity

【4】What’s the author’s attitude to the future of cinemas?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Objective.

    C.Subjective.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 24、Today's children are the "result" of the modern society. Our parents have jobs that keep them busy almost all day long. They only have a free day in a week. This doesn't allow them to keep an eye on their children.

On the other hand, the modern society gives more freedom to the children than they could "handle". As a child, you don't know how to grow up by yourself until you reach a certain age. That is why you need school and parents to be by your side all the time. If you don't have either of them you may make a lot of mistakes. The social system of the modem society is very lenient especially with the children.

Most of the children today are rebels(叛逆者). They are rude. They are given too much freedom by their families. This is their parents' mistake. They ought to know that the freedom they give to their children is misunderstood.

For example it is a bad thing for a 17-year-old child to go out in the evening on weekends. Parents are also guilty of the way their children show up in the street or at school. The same guilt belongs to the teaching system as well. Pupils shouldn't be allowed to dress like they were on a fashion presentation at school.

Another important fact we can think of regarding the freedom of children is their free will of spending money. Parents shouldn't allow their children to spend money on whatever they want.

I think children are given too much freedom not only by their parents, but also by the society. The latter is more to be blamed!

【1】The writer implies that parents' busy lifestyle  .

    A. makes their children become independent

    B. may lead to a tense parent-child relationship

    C. is harmful to their children's health

    D. is likely to create a troubled generation

【2】What does the underlined word "lenient" ( in Paragraph 2 ) mean ?

    A. Not responsible. B. Not strict.

    C. Unkind.   D. Unfair.

【3】 It seems that the writer agrees that students  .

    A. should stay at home on weekends

    B. can wear trendy clothes at school

    C. had better wear school uniform at school

    D. can be allowed to go out in the evenings

【4】According to the writer, which of the following takes the primary responsibility for children's problems?

    A. The social environment. B. The educational system.

    C. Each family. D. The school.
