Ever since that fateful visit, China has learned from Singapore the finer points of governance, management and economic growth. No wonder, over the years China has sent many Party, government and corporate officials to receive training in Singapore.

In 1994, the Singapore Industrial Park in Suzhou, Jiangsu province (now renamed the Suzhou Industrial Park) was set up. Over the years, the industrial park has become a testing ground for many new reform programs in China, including those for social security, venture capital and private equity.

Mozart’s “Flute Concerto No.1 in G Major” is most often associated with bright yellow and orange, whereas his “Requiem in D Minor” is linked to bluish gray, the findings revealed.

US researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, enlisted nearly 100 subjects for a study on music and color. With 37 colors, the UC Berkeley study found that people tend to pair faster-paced music in a major key with lighter, more vivid, yellow colors, whereas slower-paced music in a minor key is more likely to be teamed up with darker, grayer, bluer colors.

“Surprisingly, we can predict with 95 percent accuracy how happy or sad the colors people pick will be based on how happy or sad the music is that they are listening to,” said lead author and UC Berkeley vision scientist Stephen Palmer.

In three experiments, the subjects listened to 18 classical music pieces that varied in pace (slow, medium, fast) and in major VS minor keys. In the first experiment, participants were asked to pick five of the 37 colors that best matched the music to which they were listening. Separately, they rated each piece of music on a scale of happy to sad, strong to weak, lively to dull, and calm to angry.

Next, the research team plans to study particiapants in Turkey where traditional music employs a wider range of scales than just major and minor. “We know that in Mexico and the US the responses are very similar,” Palmer said. “But we don’t yet know about China or Turkey.”

24、Amazon is closing all of its brick-and-mortar(实体的)bookstores, as well as its 4-star shops and pop-up locations, as the online retail(零售)giant reworks its physical footprint.

The Seattle-based company said that the move will enable it to concentrate its efforts on Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Go and its upcoming Amazon Style stores. Amazon Style, which will sell fashion and accessories, is set to open in a Southern California mall later this year. “We remain engaged in building great, long-term physical retail experiences and technologies and we’re working closely with our affected employees to help them find new roles within Amazon,” the company said in a statement.

Amazon opened its first brick-and-mortar bookstore in 2015, two decades after it began selling books online and helped drive many traditional book shops out of business. Amazon’s 4-star shops, which made their debut in 2018, carry a limited selection of best-selling products from top categories that Amazon. com sells, including consumer electronics, toys and games.

The move comes as Amazon. com Inc.’s overall financial growth is slowing as a result of supply-chain difficulties and labor shortages, and it’s looking for new ways to increase sales.

Amazon also is raising its annual Prime membership fee in the U.S. to S139 per year from $119. It’s the first price hike for the Prime membership since 2018.

Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said the bookstore strategy comes as a surprise. He said he believes it’s an acknowledgement that the bookstores weren’t delivering the returns Amazon was seeking.

Saunders said he thinks the main problem with Amazon’s non-food stores is that they lacked a real purpose even though the goods was well presented. “They were designed for people to pop in and browse rather than as destinations where people would head on a mission to buy something.”
