二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Everyone desires for success and people will do whatever they can to achieve success. But seeking success overly may contribute to being addicted to it. 1

Though it isn't a conventional medical addiction, for many people success has addictive properties. To a certain extent, praise stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine, which gets involved in all addictive behaviors. The desire for success may be born to human nature, but specialness doesn't come cheap.

2 In 1980, the physician Robert Goldman found that more than half of ambitious athletes would be willing to take a drug that would kill them in five years in exchange for winning every competition they entered.

3 The goal can't be satisfied and most people never feel "successful enough”. The high only lasts a day or two and then it's on to the next goal. Satisfaction wears off almost immediately. What we will do next is that we must run on to the next reward to avoid the feeling of falling behind. 4 But quitting isn't easy for addicts. For people who are addicted to success, withdrawal can be a bitter experience, both physically and psychologically. Depression and anxiety are common among outstanding athletes after their careers end. Olympic athletes, in particular, suffer from the “post-Olympic blues”. Success in and success of itself are not bad things. 5

    A.People shouldn't have continued.

    B.Unfortunately, success is endless.

C.That is what is called success addicts.

D.Both can bring fun and sweetness to life.

E.Success is cruel work, and it requires sacrifices.

F.Therefore, it contributes to us leading a peaceful life.

G.Surprisingly, people barely attach enough significance to their goal.

  • 22、When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admitted I was not a bit happy and excited at all. I thought it would require interactions with others. But later, I was astonished when I got to experience it firsthand.

Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a peer (同伴) review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I preferred to work independently. But when I got involved, I found in the experience, I had done something that I thought was nearly impossible — it made my poetry better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more detail.

One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking but I thought with Summit Learning, I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The peer activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.

Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive and hard-working culture that allows us to push our boundaries and keep going It creates a sense of community since we are all working towards a similar goal.

As an active boy, I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom, there are restrictions on what I can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and pursue my goals.

Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself going back to a normal classroom.

  • 24、   Robots are now being employed not just for dangerous tasks, such as discovering mines or rescuing people in disasters. They are also finding application as household helps and as nursing assistants. As the number of machines increases, which are equipped with the latest artificial intelligence and take on a growing variety of specialized and everyday tasks, the question of how people see them and behave towards them becomes ever more urgent.

A team led by Sari Nijssen of Radboud University and Markus Paulus, Professor of Developmental Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilians- Universitat (LMU), have carried out a study to determine the degree to which people show concern for robots and behave toward them based on moral principles.

According to Sari Nijssen, the study set out to answer the following question: "Under what circumstances would adults be willing to sacrifice robots to save human lives?" The participants were faced with a hypothetical (假设的) moral dilemma:Would they be prepared to put a single person at risk in order to save a group of injured persons? The intended victim presented in the situations was either a humanoid robot that had been humanized (人性化的) to various degrees or a robot that was clearly recognizable as a machine.

The study suggested that the more the robot was humanized, the less likely participants were to sacrifice it. Situations that included vivid stories in which the robot was described as a merciful being or as a creature with its own understandings, experiences and thoughts, were more likely to stop the study participants from sacrificing it in the interests of anonymous (无名的) humans.

"This result indicates that our study group attached a certain moral status to the robot," says Paulus. "One possible suggestion of this finding is that attempts to humanize robots should not go too far. Such efforts could come into conflict with their intended function—to be of help to us."

1What has become a concern about robots?

A.How to treat them in life. B.How to humanize them.

C.How to use them effectively. D.How to find more applications.

2In the study the participants probably have to decide _______.

A.where to experience risks. B.when to sacrifice a robot.

C.which robot to work with. D.what robots should be like.

3What can be inferred from Paulus' words?

A.Humanized robots offer less help to people.

B.Certain moral status should be attached to robots.

C.Humanizing robots too much may be improper.

D.Conflicts often happen between humans and robots.

4Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A.Robots, a Must for Future B.Robots Saved, People Take the Hit

C.Humanized Robots, a New Trend D.Humanized Robots Replace Human

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate. Laurie was very nervous. “If I can win today.” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”

Laurie was told that she had a tough competitor this year, a girl named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” said the coach.

Minutes later, the door swung open and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dropped her skating bag onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a thud(砰地一声), “Hi. I’m Jinny Jordan,” she said.

Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her. I may lose tonight.”

“This costume was my mom’s idea,” Jinny said, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “It looks like a flag.”

Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s bag, “Some stuff fell out of your bag.” Jinny looked down. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.

“Jinny.” called someone, “You’d better give the music tape to the sound engineer right away.”

“Oh, my God! I thought I had handed it hours ago. It’s a green box with my initials(姓名首字母)written on it,” screamed Jinny, hurrying out.

Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as the skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
