21、This was no ordinary class. The students who came together were all science or engineering professors at Cornell University. They had interrupted their research to accept an invitation to take part in an unusual experiment: “an interesting week of poetry.” This class was part of a study to answer the questions: Why is science difficult for many nonscience students? What can teachers learn about teaching if they take a class that is not in their field?
The students in the poetry class listened to lectures and took notes. They had reading tasks and had to write three short papers. All students noticed one thing – the importance of spoken words. In science and engineering classes, the instructors put tables and drawings on the blackboard. But in this poetry class, the instructors just talked. They didn’t write anything on the board.
The scientists and engineers noticed one similarity between science and poetry. In both subjects, students need to find layers (层次) of meaning . Some layers are simple, clean, and on the surface; other layers are deeper and more difficult. This search for different levels of meaning doesn’t happen much in undergraduate(本科) science classes, but it is important later, in graduate school. And it is always important in humanities(人文科学).
Both the poetry instructors and their students learned something about teaching from this experience. One poetry instructor, for example, now sees the importance of using informative as he teaches. Most of the scientists agreed on several points. First, humanities classes might help science students to see patterns and decide which information is important. Second, the poetry class was fun. One engineer decided, “We need to change the way we teach engineering to make to make it an enjoyable experience for students.”
But perhaps the most important result of the experience was this; All of the professors began to think about how they teach and how they cam teach better.

22、Most of us are already aware of the direct effect we have on our friends and family. But we rarely consider that everything we think, feel, do, or say can spread far beyond the people we know. Conversely(相反地), our friends and family serve as conduits(渠道) for us to be influenced by hundreds or even thousands of other people. In a kind of social chain reaction, we can be deeply affected by events we do not witness that happen to people we do not know. As part of a social network, we go beyond ourselves, for good or ill, and become a part of something much larger.
Our connectedness carries with it fundamental implications(影响) for the way we understand the human condition. Social networks have value precisely because they can help us to achieve what we could not achieve on our own. Yet, socialnetwork effects are not always positive. Depression, obesity, financial panic, and violence also spread. Social networks, it turns out, tend to magnify(放大) whatever they are seeded with.
Partly for this reason, social networks are creative. And what these networks create does not belong to any one individual—it is shared by all those in the network. In this way, a social network is like a commonly owned forest: We all stand to benefit from it, but we also must work together to ensure it remains healthy and productive. While social networks are fundamentally and distinctively human, and can be seen everywhere, they should not be taken for granted.
If you are happier or richer or healthier than others, it may have a lot to do with where you happen to be in the network, even if you cannot recognize your own location. And it may have a lot to do with the overall structure of the network, even if you cannot control that structure at all. And in some cases, the process feeds back to the network itself. A person with many friends may become rich and then attract even more friends. This richgetricher dynamic means social networks can dramatically reinforce two different kinds of inequality in our society: situational inequality and positional inequality.
Lawmakers have not yet considered the consequences of positional inequality. Still, understanding the way we are connected is an essential step in creating a more just society and in carrying out public policies affecting everything from public health to the economy. We might be better off vaccinating(接种疫苗) centrally located individuals rather than weak individuals. We might be better off helping interconnected groups of people to avoid criminal behaviour rather than preventing or punishing crimes one at a time.
If we want to understand how society works, we need to fill in the missing links between individuals. We need to understand how interconnections and interactions between people give rise to wholly new aspects of human experience that are not present in the individuals themselves. If we do not understand social networks, we cannot hope to fully understand either ourselves or the world we inhabit.
【1】Why is a social network like a commonly owned forest?
A.It remains healthy and productive.
B.What it creates can be enjoyed by everyone in the network.
C.It is creative and shared by people in the whole society.
D.It tends to magnify negative things.
【2】We can learn from Paragraph 4 that ________.
A.whether we are richer depends on the number of friends we make
B.the wealth we possess has nothing to do with individual continuous efforts
C.sometimes our success may be largely due to our position in social networks
D.we won't succeed unless we fully control the overall structure of the network
【3】What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To introduce the characteristics of social networks.
B.To urge people to understand how our society works.
C.To show the significance of understanding social networks.
D.To explain the possible consequences of ignoring social networks.
【4】What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A.We can't be easily affected by strangers.
B.We have negative effects on other social members.
C.We are connected and form a social network.
D.We will not make a difference in a specific group.
23、 Kaitlin Woolley and Ayelet Fishbach report in Psychological Science that a meal taken “family-style” from a central plate can greatly improve the outcome of later negotiations.
Having conducted previous research in 2017 revealing that eating similar foods led to people feeling emotionally closer to one another, Dr Woolley and Dr Fishbach wondered whether the way in which food was served also had a psychological effect. They theorized that, on the one hand, sharing food with other people might indicate food scarcity(短缺)and increase a feeling of competition. However, they also reasoned that it could instead lead people to become more aware of others' needs and drive cooperative behavior as a result. Curious to find out, they did a series of experiments.
For the first test they included 100 pairs of participants from a local cafe, none of whom knew each other. The participants were seated at a table and fed corn chips with salsa. Half the pairs were given their own basket of 20 grams of chips and a bowl of 25 grams of salsa, and half were given 40 grams of chips and 50 grams of salsa to share. As a cover for the experiment, all participants were told this snack was to be consumed before the game began.
The game asked the participants to negotiate an hourly wage rate during a fictional strike. Each person was randomly assigned to represent the union or management and follow a set of rules.
The researchers measured cooperation by noting the number of rounds it took to reach an agreement, and found that those who shared food resolved the strike significantly faster(in 8. 7rounds)than those who did not(13.2 rounds). A similar experiment was conducted with 104 participants and Goldfish crackers(饼干), this time negotiating an airline's route prices. The results were much the same, with the food-sharers negotiating successfully 63. 3% of the time and those who did not share doing so 42. 9%of the time.

A.To show the way food is served.
B.To prove sharing food increases competition.
C.To confirm sharing food can promote cooperation.
D.To find out whether sharing food can get people close emotionally.
【3】Why were participants asked to eat up the snack before the game?
A.To hide the intention of the experiment.
B.To avoid the distraction during the game.
C.To reward them for their participation.
D.To add to their energy.
【4】How did Dr Woolley and Dr Fishbach prove their point of view?
A.By making a questionnaire.
B.By giving participants interviews.
C.By analyzing the reasons for cooperation.
D.By comparing the results of the experiments
24、 Zhang Yaping, a 32-year-old woman, was awarded a poverty-alleviation ( 扶贫) prize by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development earlier this year. Despite difficulty walking, she overcame poverty through her own effort and helped many people around her.
Born in Gansu province, in 1988, Zhang contracted polio (小儿麻痹症) at a young age, which affected her ability to walk. When she was a junior high school student, a traffic accident caused permanent injury to her father's leg. Zhang had to drop out of school to take care of her father and for several years, continued learning by herself. She was admitted into a secondary technical school in 2009.
After graduation, she decided to work in her hometown. “My brother and sister were quite young, and my mother couldn't take care of both of them as well as my disabled father, so I could not go far,” says Zhang.
She tried her hand at various jobs, but found it difficult because of her leg ailment. She then decided to grow crops in a large scale, inspired by other villagers.
“At the beginning, I didn't have enough money or labor, so I went to villagers' homes every day trying to persuade them to join me, as well as exploring every means to collect money.” says Zhang.
Although she enjoyed a good start to her farming career, it wasn't long before a landslide caused by heavy rain and an earthquake in 2017 resulted in heavy damage to her cooperative. “The loss just robbed me of my confidence to continue. However, it occurred to me that it was I who encouraged other villagers to join the cooperative. If I gave up, I would be lacking in my responsibilities to them,” recalled Zhang. Finally, Zhang Yaping found her resolve and restarted her business with the help of local government. The cooperative gradually developed into a large-scale operation, which has benefited 206 households. They bid farewell to poverty and led a prosperous life.
“In the future, I want to expand the scale of the cooperative, form my own brand, promote deep processing of our products and apply more technology in raising our livestock. Although I walk slowly and take longer to get where I am going, I believe that someday I will overtake many others,” says Zhang.
