21、After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
【1】 Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them. “The great man.” said Mencius, “is he who does not lose his child's heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. 【2】 We jus follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark. to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. 【3】 We will probably have to force ourselves to awaken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts. writing books on flower arrangement. One way to begin is to answer your own excuse. You haven't any special ability? Most people don't: there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time? 【4】 Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You' re too old? Remember Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78
However you start, remember there is no better time to start then right now. for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
A.We stop challenging custom.
B.That's good, because it's always the people with no time who get things done.
C.Either curiosity or discontent makes human being move forward.
D.These deep human urges count for much more than ambition.
E.But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance.
F.Discontent made the great names unsatisfied.
22、Occasionally, misfortune will happen in our life and no one can avoid it. If you choose only to complain and escape from the misfortune, it will constantly follow you no matter where you go. 【1】
A girl, called Selina, lost her arms in a traffic accident that caused her father’s death — who was the main source of support for the whole family. 【2】 For the sake of caring for her, her elder brother became her shadow , never leaving her alone for years. Except for writing with her toes, she was totally unable to do anything in her life. Then one day, her elder brother wanted to live his own normal life, and they had no choice but to separate. So she was almost desperate and didn’t know what to do next.
【3】 When he tried to prepare dinner for his parents, he overturned the kerosene light on the stove, resulting in a fire that took his hands away. Though his younger brother that was studying in another city, showed his willingness to take care of him, he was determined to be totally independent. At school, he always studied hard. Most of what he learned was to be independent. Once he wrote the following in his composition: “I am lucky. Though I lost my arms, I still have legs; I am lucky. Though my wings are broken, my heart can still fly. ”
One day, the girl and the boy were both interviewed on a television program. The girl complained to the TV host about her uncertain future at being left on her own, but the boy was full of enthusiasm for his life. 【4】 The girl wrote: My elder brother’s arms are my arms. However, the boy wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.
【5】 It is true that life is unpredictable. Disasters can strike at any time. How you deal with misfortune when faced with it is the true test of your character. If you choose only to complain and escape from the ordeal, it will always follow you wherever you go. But if you decide to face it bravely, the hardship will turn out to be a fortune on which new hopes will arise.
A.A similar misfortune happened to a boy named Jerry, too.
B.Since then, she had had to depend on her elder brother’s arms.
C.So his father went out looking for his mother, leaving him alone at home.
D.One night her mother, who suffered from chronic mental illness disappeared.

F.They had both encountered the same misfortune, but had completely different attitudes towards lives.
G.But if you decide to be will-powered, the sufferings will turn out to be a fortune where new hopes will arise.
23、There are plenty of mindless activities to keep a child busy in this information age. Yet despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Alice wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition which she won last year.
As a writer, I know about winning contests—and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection letter from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and destroyed hopes can resurface in our children.
A revelation(启示)came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied. “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”
I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地)told them. Telling myself that I was an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.
Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借鉴) my daughter’s experience.
While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.
【1】The underlined sentence probably means that the author was __________.
A. trying to let her daughter enjoy her own life
B. helping her daughter develop real skills for writing
C. making sure that her daughter would win the contest
D. trying to get her daughter to do the thing as the author wished

A. She wanted to share her story with readers.
B. She had won a prize in the previous contest.
C. She believed she possessed real talent for writing.
D. She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.
【3】The author took great pains to improve her daughter’s stories because _________.
A. she was afraid that Alice’s imagination might run wild while writing
B. she did not want to disappoint Alice who needed her help so much
C. she wanted to help Alice realize her dream of becoming a writer
D. she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance
【4】What does the writer mean to tell us in the last two paragraphs?
A. Children need more room to develop.
B. Parents should co-opt children’s experience.
C. Children should be provided enough help.
D. Parents need to remind their children of their own choices.
